A CHORUS LINE Gives a Chance to Dance

CMT_A Chorus LinetlogoCINCINNATI, OH – Cincinnati Music Theatre is proud to present the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical A CHORUS LINE from November 8-16, 2013 at the Aronoff Center’s intimate Jarson-Kaplan Theater (see full performance schedule below).

Set in an empty theatre, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. This is the chance of a lifetime for 17 dancers. It’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamed – they’ve been given the chance to dance in a Broadway show! 

A CHORUS LINE was created and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett with a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and lyrics by Edward Kleban.

This production is choreographed and directed by Brian Anderson, who contributed award-winning choreography to Cincinnati Music Theatre’s 42nd STREET and HAIRSPRAY. Brian, who was part of the original European Tour of A CHORUS LINE, re-stages the original choreography. 

The original production of A CHORUS LINE opened at the Newman Theatre on May 21, 1975 and later at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards (including Best Musical, Score, and Book), and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. A CHORUS LINE ran for almost 15 years and remains one of the longest-running American musicals in Broadway history.

Klingons in Need of Assistance!

HWT_A Klingon Christmas CarolThank you for opening your hailing frequencies! There are some Klingons in need of assistance here in our very solar system! The Imperial Klingon Players are performing the classic tale, A KLINGON CHRISTMAS CAROL, at the Art Academy of Cincinnati this December 11-15 and 18-22, but unfortunately the Art Academy does not recognize gold pressed latinum as currency. In order to assist the Imperial Klingon Players, I have launched a Kickstarter campaign at the link below:

Following this link, you will find a number of different rewards that are sure to please even the biggest Scrooge in your family. And since we are headed towards the Holidays, please consider giving one of these rewards as a gift! Who wouldn’t want a hug from a Klingon? Or maybe you’ve always secretly longed to play a Klingon on stage…now’s your chance! There’s also my personal favorite, the Klingon Captain, where you get to deliver an order to the Klingon of your choice at one of our shows! We’ll be adding other rewards very soon, too!

Along with those rewards, our group gets to bring a unique piece of theatre that Cincinnati will remember for years to come. With this funding, we’ll be able to afford the costumes, the wigs, the foreheads (Oh, yes…foreheads!), and everything we need to make this a successful production.

We are days away from our deadline, and we’ve hit 7% of our total goal. With Kickstarter, it’s all or nothing. So if we don’t meet the goal of $3,500 dollars, we won’t get funded. VP Seeking Male Actors 25-35 for ALMOST, MAINE

VP_logoAfter holding auditions for ALMOST, MAINE this past week, Village Players is still looking for a few male actors approximately 25-35 to complete casting.

The production runs February 14-22, and rehearsals will begin in January (there will possibly be a read-through at some point before the holidays).

We are attempting to do the show with a full cast (as opposed to having actors play multiple parts), so the time-commitment would be similar to that of a one-act play.

MPI Annouces THE LION IN WINTER

MPI_Lion in WinterMariemont Players presents John Goldman’s dramatic comedy The Lion in Winter at the Walton Creek Theater, 4101 Walton Creek Road (just East of Mariemont), November 8th through November 24th, 2013.

Set during Christmas 1183, this epic story plays out the spectacular strategies for power and love between two of England’s most formidable and yet very human rulers, King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their three sons, hungry for the crown. Motivated by spite as well as sense of duty, Henry and Eleanor maneuver against each other to position their favorite son in line for succession.

The Lion in Winter is directed by Dee Dunn, produced by NancyAnn & Tom Storey, and features Clayton Castle, Matthew Hannifin, Bett Kooris, Kate Powell, Matt Schnuth, Jeff Simon and Jack Williams.

Performances will be at 8:00pm on November 8th, November 9th, November 15th, November 16th, November 22nd and November 23rd; at 2:00pm on November 10th and November 24th; at 7:30pm on November 14th and November 21st; 2:00pm & 7:00pm on November 17th; and at 3:00pm & 8:00pm on November 23rd.

OF MICE AND MEN Review

OF MICE AND MEN presented by Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through Nov. 10. Read the show description.

If Cincinnati Shakespeare Company keeps this up, they may need to change their name to Cincinnati Classic Theatre Company. CSC follows OLIVER TWIST with another excellent adaptation of a literary classic, this time John Steinbeck’s OF MICE AND MEN.

I want to start off by saying I am very impressed by Jim Hopkins’ and Jeremy Dubin’s versatility. Going from Bill Sikes and Fagin to Lenny and George really showcases their range and talent.

The performances across the ensemble are top notch. Every character has their own clearly defined personality. The movement on stage is confident, natural and had purpose. Not once did I see anyone on stage out of character or not in the moment.

I liked how the energy of Charlie Cromer’s Curly was so different from the rest of the guys. There was great character rapport between Slim (Justin McCombs) and George (Jeremy Dubin). Ken Early as Crooks and Joneal Joplin as Candy brought hope and a quiet dignity to the roles. A good Lenny can make or break this show. Jim Hopkins brings a flawless and and totally believable Lenny to the stage. Maggie Lou Rader finds a great balance with the “hussy-ness” and loneliness of Curley’s wife. Other ensemble members include Randy Lee Bailey as Carlson, Marc Liby as The Boss, Zach Schute as Whit and Rufus as Dog.

On top of his excellent direction, Drew Fracher’s stage combat is the best I’ve ever seen for a production OF MICE AND MEN. The scene in the bunkhouse was smart, well-rehearsed and very believable. The barn scene built naturally and the unintentional finality was quick and shocking. Great job by Maggie Lou Rader in physically committing to it.

Technically the show excelled as well with costume design by Madeline Greenwalt, lighting design by Sara Watson and sound design by Doug Borntrager.  Travis McElroy’s set design was simple yet extremely versatile. The set changes were well-choreographed and maintained the pace of the show. Since the changes were on the long side, I think it was smart to leave enough light to allow the audience to watch the changes in silhouette.  Good work by stage manager Alice Flanders and crew.

OF MICE AND MEN is a classic story told with great heart and integrity. It is extremely well-done across all areas and stands as one of my favorite shows of the season.
