Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Covedale Center for the Performing Arts’ BROADWAY BOUND with an LCT nomination for lead actress (Tracy Schoster) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

Part three of Neil Simon’s acclaimed autobiographical trilogy finds Eugene and his older brother Stanley trying to break into the world of show business as professional comedy writers while coping with their parents break-up and eventual divorce. When their material is broadcast on the radio for the first time, the family is upset to hear a thinly-veiled portrait of themselves played for laughs.

Panelists praised Tracy Schoster’s performance as Kate Jerome as “compelling”, appreciating”the combination of intensity and vulnerability she brought to that part.” The play as whole was described as “a great evening,” full of “organic and three-dimensional characters.”

BROADWAY BOUND continues through February 17th. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/ccpa.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

ETC’s FREUD’S LAST SESSION Earns LCT Nomination

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati’s FREUD’S LAST SESSION with an LCT nomination for props (Shannon Rae Lutz) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

This spirited drama centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites a then little-known professor, C.S. Lewis, to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life—only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time.

The panelists singled out Shannon Rae Lutz for her “fantastic” work on props: “She did more than create a replica of Freud’s office; her choice of colors, furniture and art were just the right side of worn to give the set the look of a cluttered work space.” The show as a whole was described as “fascinating”, “refreshing” and “intriguing.”

FREUD’S LAST SESSION continues through February 10th. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center’s CAMELOT IN CONCERT with 3 LCT nominations, for lead actors (Mark Hardy and Doug Carpenter), lead actress (Danielle Knox), as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

In the magical age of Merlin and the Round Table, Arthur and Guenevere preside over tranquil Camelot in enlightened bliss, until bold Sir Lancelot and the queen succumb to a romance that betrays Arthur and threatens to tear his kingdom and his ideals asunder. With cherished songs including “If Ever I Would Leave You” and “How To Handle a Woman,” Lerner & Loewe’s lyrical score enchants under the baton of Mischa Santora and members of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

Panelists praised Mark Hardy’s portrayal of King Arthur as “convincing”: “he completely filled his role as Arthur, performing with absolute assurance.” Doug Carpenter as Lancelot was “a powerhouse both in voice and acting sensibilities”; “he acted with grace and simplicity which only increased his strength and stature as Lance”. Danielle Knox “was a nearly perfect Guenevere: pretty, flighty then maturing”; her voice was “divine”. Panelists thought this concert version of Camelot was “a wonderful concept, making for an up-close, intimate experience for the audience.”

CAMELOT IN CONCERT continues through February 3rd. Tickets can be purchased at www.thecarnegie .com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

CAA_Overture Awards logoTOMORROW’S STARS
FINALS COMPETITION and AWARDS CEREMONY

The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is proud to present the 2013 Overture Awards Scholarship Competition – the largest locally-run arts scholarship competition in the country. The Overture Awards annually provides a $3,000 scholarship to six area high school students for education and training expenses, with 18 finalists each winning a $500 scholarship.

The Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Winners will be announced immediately following the competition.

This year, 426 students were nominated by their schools to compete in one of six artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. The Overture Awards was developed to recognize, encourage, and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. It also provides students an opportunity to share their talents and interests among their peers in a supportive environment outside of their individual schools. There are three levels of competition: Regionals, Semi-Finals, and Finals.

The Overture Awards Regional Competitions were held on January 12 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Immanuel United Methodist Church (Lakeside Park, KY), Saint Ursula Academy, University of Cincinnati – Blue Ash College, and Xavier University. The top 20 percent of competitors in each discipline advanced to the Semi-Finals, which were held at the Aronoff Center on January 18 and 19. Twenty-four finalists (four in each discipline) will compete in the Finals Competition at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater on March 2.

Now in its 17th year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation (now Duke Energy) and Leadership Cincinnati (a program of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce). The Overture Awards is funded and administered by the Cincinnati Arts Association, which operates and manages the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. The Overture Awards also relies on hundreds of volunteers from the community who help raise funds, adjudicate and manage the competitions, and nurture the program.
