22nd Annual Wine Tasting Gala benefiting Arts Education

The Miami University Performing Arts Series will host its 22nd annual Wine Tasting Gala and Auction to benefit arts education efforts, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Millett Hall, Oxford.

Tickets for general admission to the Wine Tasting are $59 per person. Reserved tables for four, which includes admission, sparkling wine and chocolates, are $316 and available on a limited basis. Tickets for the Premium Pour Section are an additional $5 each, six for $25 or 15 for $60, and are available in advance or at the door.

This year’s event, sponsored by Kona Bistro, features a long list of wines from affordable to rare; a special Premium Pours section featuring bottles out of area wine collectors’ private cellars; and a delicious variety of hors d’oeuvres provided by Kona Bistro. The silent auction includes vacation getaways, event tickets, private dinner parties, and many other items.

We have partnered with local hotels to offer a special $75 hotel rate. Make reservations by Jan. 7 at the Baymont Inn & Suites: 523-2722 or Best Western Sycamore Inn: 523-0000. Free shuttle to and from the event is provided for hotel guests.

Proceeds from the Wine Tasting are used to fund outreach activities such as workshops, master classes, coffee houses and discussions with the visiting professional artists appearing on the Series. These events are provided for regional students and area community members at no cost to the participants. During our 2010-2011 season, over 3,000 students and community members from Miami University, Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown and Cincinnati participated in these free events. We could not provide these valuable services to our campus and community without the proceeds we earn from the Wine Tasting.

In 2007, the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring another 145. Hannah’s husband David was driving one of the cars that went off the bridge. He’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but refuses to attend a support group. Hannah’s life is falling apart. She can’t get pregnant, she’s one step away from losing her job, and she thinks her husband, who hasn’t been to work for months, may be an alcoholic. All he does is sit around the house, watering the plants with beer. When her flaky sister, Susan arrives from California for an open-ended stay Hannah seems ready to unravel for good. Collapse is an uncomfortably funny exploration of the crumbling structures that undergird our bridges, our economy, and our most intimate relationships.

Actor Needed for MLT’s NIXON’S NIXON

Middletown Lyric Theatre is looking for an actor to portray former President Richard M. Nixon for their March production of NIXON’S NIXON.

Directed by: Janet Powell

Synopsis: It is the night before President Nixon is to announce his resignation, and he has summoned Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to the Lincoln Sitting Room. Kissinger arrives, expecting to find his President preparing to resign but Nixon leads his Secretary of State on a journey through the high moments of his administration and Nixon’s past. The journey borders on the surreal as Nixon pressures Kissinger into reenacting crucial scenes. Meanwhile, Kissinger is subtly working to convince Nixon to step down so that he can pursue his geopolitical goals—and his own quest for historical glory—unencumbered by a weakened President.

A Note about the Actor: Whether the actor’s physical appearance resembles Nixon is not particularly important. More importantly the two men should subtly evoke Nixon and Kissinger through voice and gesture. Please keep in mind that Nixon was 61 at the time of his resignation. The role of Henry Kissinger has already been cast.

Heroes, Amazons, Gods and Goddesses……..A mythological comedy that brings together Heracles, his pal Theseus and the Amazons with Hera and Zeus in a clever tale that comments on war and gender. Heracles arrives at the home of the Amazons to steal the royal jewels- THE BELT- and finds the ladies will not surrender it, nor will they fight to defend it. The Heroes are bewildered. The co-queens alternate charm and sarcasm to defeat the men until Hera decides to intervene and turns the Amazon queen-dom upside down as the heretofore peaceful women prepare for WAR!
