NET Presents THE CANTERVILLE GHOST

New Edgecliff presents THE CANTERVILLE GHOST
Original Oscar Wilde story adapted by resident playwright O’Keefe

One Night Only! Saturday, October 20, 2012

New Edgecliff Theatre’s annual Sweet Suspense Radio Drama returns with a family-friendly radio style adaptation of the Oscar Wilde classic, adapted for the stage by NET’s Playwright-in-Residence, Catie O’Keefe. This one-night-only event includes the re-creation of an early 30’s-era radio studio, complete with live sound effects. This year, we bring our annual event to the Cincinnati Art Museum for a truly unforgettable night!

Where others have run screaming in terror, the Otis family seems quite comfortable in their new haunted house. After moving to England and into Canterville Chase, this family of Americans finds nothing frightening about the famous Canterville ghost, whose attempts to replenish an old blood stain are seen only as annoying, while efforts to scare the family usually end with the ghost himself hiding in fear. It’s not until the young daughter, Virginia, takes an interest in helping the murderous spirit, that the family and the ghost find peace and quiet. Directed by Bob Allen.

During an extended intermission, the audience will also enjoy a dessert buffet, sampling delectable desserts from area restaurants & bakeries, making this suspenseful evening truly “sweet!”

Sat, Oct 20, 7:30pm, Cincinnati Art Museum, 953 Eden Park Dr. Event parking is free. Special pricing for this one-night-only event: $35/adults $20/ages 13 and under. To reserve, call 513.399.6638, or go to www.newedgecliff.com.

Clifton Players’ A BRIGHT NEW BOISE Earns Two LCT Nominations

Kevin Crowley as Will & MaryKate Moran as Anna.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Clifton Players’ production of A BRIGHT NEW BOISE with LCT nominations for Ensemble Acting in a Play and Sound Design (David Levy) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

Samuel D. Hunter’s A BRIGHT NEW BOISE is an earnest comedy about the meager profits of modern faith. In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is summoning The Rapture. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to the Hobby Lobby, not only for employment, but also to rekindle a relationship with Alex, his brooding teenage son, whom he gave up for adoption several years ago. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these and other lost souls of the Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith.

Panelists thought the ensemble was “superb…a seamless, well balanced team”, “fresh ‘new faces’ who were engaging and played solidly”. David Levy’s “soundscape was textured, astoundingly detailed, realistic, and effective”. Overall, panelists recommended it as “a powerful, thought-provoking evening of theatre.”

A Bright New Boise continues through October 28th. Tickets can be purchased at http://cliftonperformancetheatre.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

ETC’s MRS. MANNERLY Earns LCT Nomination

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati’s MRS. MANNERLY with an LCT nomination for lead actor (Raymond McAnally) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

This irreverent, yet poignant comedy is inspired by the hilarious memories of a childhood etiquette class, wherein playwright Jeffrey Hatcher conjures up the world of a ten-year-old studying manners. Set in 1967, Mrs. Mannerly is a demanding teacher, and no student in her thirty-six years of etiquette classes has ever achieved a perfect score. But, when he discovers her secret past, Young Jeffrey is determined to be the first to achieve this feat.

Raymond McAnally’s performance, as Jeffrey as well as multiple other characters, was described by the panellists as “exceptional…his attention to physical detail, the way he delineated the various characters and voices he portrayed, his ease and command of each moment, and his obvious affection for the character was a joy to behold.”

Panelists praised the production as “a charming play that was laugh-out-loud funny from start to finish” and “one of the most delightful shows I have seen at ETC.”

Mrs. Mannerly continues through October 28th. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

CSC’s ROMEO AND JULIET Earns Three LCT Nominations

Sara Clark Rose as Juliet & Ian Bond as Romeo. Photo by Rich Sofranko Photography.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s ROMEO AND JULIET with LCT nominations for lead actress (Sara Clark), direction (Brian Isaac Phillips), and set design (Andrew Hungerford), as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

One of the most beloved romantic tragedies in Shakespeare’s canon, ROMEO AND JULIET is the tale of the Bard’s star-crossed lovers, brought to life in a modern world of passion and conflict. In defiance of their families and amidst the animosity of friends, a young couple will risk everything to be together.

Panelists praised Sara Clark’s portrayal of Juliet as full of “passion and conviction,” initially playing the giddy teenager perfectly and later engulfing the audience in her emotional unrest, “capturing the honesty of the part”. Of Brian Isaac Phillips’ directing, they noted, “the world of this production was well thought out and skillful…with a nice balance of concept and storytelling,” taking many risks that worked out well. Andrew Hungerford’s more contemporary scenic design was “enchanting” with a creative use of the balcony. Overall, panelists found the production “very accessible to both new audiences and Shakespeare lovers”; “one of my favorites of Shakespeare…and justice was done in this great work.”

ROMEO AND JULIET continues through November 11th. Tickets can be purchased at www.cincyshakes.com.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.
