CAA Announces Finalists in 2012 Overture Awards Competition

The mission of the Overture Awards is to encourage training in, and appreciation of, the arts, and to recognize and reward excellence in artistic achievement. The Overtures hopes to promote arts education as an integral part of a student’s academic experience, while cultivating an environment that fosters continuing arts education and training.

The Overture Awards Scholarship Competition is currently the region’s largest solo arts competition for high school students (grades 9-12). The Scholarship Competition rewards artistic excellence in six disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. Each year, students compete for six $2,500 scholarships (one for each discipline). The generosity of our sponsors has allowed us to also offer 18 finalist scholarships worth $500 each. The Overture Awards Program recruits judges for the competition from the professional arts community.

CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE – Dark Side of the Moon on Feb. 25 at the Aronoff

CINCINNATI, OH – Remember when you used to listen to an entire album? Classic Albums Live does. Join us at the Aronoff Center’s Procter & Gamble Hall on Saturday, February 25 at 8:00 PM as Pink Floyd’s masterwork will be faithfully re-created note for note, cut for cut in its entirety by Classic Albums Live, down to every detail of the original recording. Legendary songs such as “Breathe,” “On The Run,” “Time,” “Great Gig In The Sky,” and “Money” and the album’s iconic title track will be performed, followed by performances of additional hits from Pink Floyd’s amazing song catalogue. Classic Albums Live – Dark Side of the Moon is part of Cincinnati Arts Association’s 2012 Winter/Spring Season.

Tickets are now on sale at http://www.CincinnatiArts.ORG , (513) 621-ARTS [2787], or the Aronoff Center Ticket Office. Group discounts are available by calling (513) 977-4157.

Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live has become the ultimate destination for music lovers wanting to hear the world’s greatest rock albums from the ‘60s and ‘70s performed live on stage, note for note, cut for cut. Relying only on the music, using what Martin refers to as ‘the world’s best musicians’, Classic Albums Live has defined itself as a mainstay in Performing Arts Centers across North America. Since 2003, the series has garnered a stellar reputation for their note perfect recitals of classic albums, performing 100+ shows each year across North America.

“This has never been done before,” says series producer, Craig Martin. “There’s a real thirst to hear these albums performed start to finish. For many of us, this is the music we grew up with – the soundtrack of our lives.”

“All of our focus is put into the music,” says Martin. “We perform the works of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin the same way an orchestra performs the works of Mozart. We don’t bother with imitation or impersonation. The bands are big – upwards of eleven pieces. We research these albums and go to great lengths to reproduce each and every sound live. We never use tape or computers. We’ll bring in a children’s choir, a sitar player, a string quartet, whatever it takes to get it right.”

Each album calls for a new group of musicians. “That’s the real challenge,” says Martin. “Finding the right musicians for the right album. So far, we’ve been bang-on with every performance.”

Released in March 1973, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week and remained on the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history. With an estimated 45 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd’s most commercially-successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. In addition to its commercial success, The Dark Side of the Moon is one of Pink Floyd’s most popular albums among fans and critics, and is frequently ranked as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.
