Free Family Fun Series Begins Saturday at the Arts Center at Dunham

SSP_Dorothy Meets Alice logoCINCINNATI, OH – November 16, 2015 — The Arts Center at Dunham is hosting a Free Family Fun Series beginning this Saturday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m. with a Dorothy Meets Alice Meet & Greet Party. Stop by anytime between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. to meet the characters of Sunset Players’ annual children’s show, DOROTHY MEETS ALICE, including Dorothy and her friends from Oz and Alice and her Wonderland friends. Then enjoy the stories, magic, games and light refreshments. Attendees will receive a discount coupon to see Dorothy Meets Alice that hits the stage at the Arts Center at Dunham on December 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, and 13.

“The Dorothy Meets Alice Meet & Greet Party launches the Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham and is an opportunity for families to experience live theater, puppet shows and operas aimed at children,” said Carrie Mees, who supports programming at the Arts Center at Dunham.

All Free Family Fun Series performances on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. The remaining series events include:

April 2, 2016 ROKCincy Opera for Children: THE WIZARD OF OZ

ROKCincy is thrilled to present “The Wizard of Oz!” Using the beloved and familiar story written by Frank Baum and made famous by the 1939 film, ROKCincy has added operatic classics to enhance the drama and retell the tale as only they can. The performance is 40 minutes in length and includes a Q&A session with the cast. ROKCincy is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.

Rudyard Kipling’s beloved classic comes alive in this fun, free-flowing adaptation. The bossy bird Darzee is furious when Rikki Tikki Tavi washes up in her garden. With the dimwitted muskrat Chuchu, she pulls out all of the stops to convince the pesky young mongoose to leave. That is until they see that the tyrannical cobra Nag runs in fear of Rikki Tikki Tavi. Ultimately, the three must band together to save their home in this delightful comedy about sharing and cooperation. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

The Arts Center at Dunham is a fine arts center for the west side of Cincinnati and its vision is to provide affordable creative and performing arts for Price Hill and surrounding communities. Housed in one of the three remaining buildings of what was the first municipally owned tuberculosis sanatorium in the United States, the Arts Center includes a 350-seat performance venue as well as extensive studio and programming space. The annual holiday children’s show brings two of literature’s most famous young ladies together when a young man puts off a book report until the last minute, then suddenly finds himself in a strange place somewhere between Oz and Wonderland. It becomes his responsibility to unscramble the stories and steer the familiar characters to their ultimate destinations while avoiding the Wicked Witch and the Red Queen.

Auditions Announced for ALIVE AND KICKING at Sunset Players

SSP_logoWhen Gloria’s last child announces he just got married, she panics. She tries to sell the house from under her easygoing husband, John, because she decides her life is over and it would be more comfortable to die in a small apartment located near a funeral home. This humorous play centers on the serious subject of adjusting to life’s constant changes.

2 men and 2 women. One each in their 40’s to 50’s and one each in their 20’s to 30s.

Auditions are November 29th and 30th from 6PM to 8PM. They will consist of cold readings from the script.

Show dates are February 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, March 3, 4, 5.

American Outlaws Bonnie and Clyde Sing Their Way across Sunset Players’ Stage

CINCINNATI, OH – September 16, 2015 —The Sunset Players open its 36th season with the Cincinnati theater premier of the musical Bonnie and Clyde.

From the legendary composer Frank Wildhorn of Jekyll and Hyde fame, BONNIE AND CLYDE is an electrifying musical of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country. When Bonnie and Clyde meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame immediately set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold behavior turns into a downward spiral and puts the lovers and their loved ones in trouble with the law. As the infamous duo’s fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer. Bonnie and Clyde weaves rockabilly, blues and gospel music into a Tony-nominated tale.

Show dates are October 2, 3, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, and 17. All shows begin at 8 p.m., with the Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Cincinnati State’s Interpreter Training Program will provide sign language interpreting for the deaf community on Saturday, October 10.

For the weekend of October 9, 10 and 11, Sunset Players will host an Anti-Prohibition Speakeasy with a cash bar of beer and wine during performances. Attendees are encouraged to wear gangster garb and receive $2 off ticket prices.

Tickets are $16 general admission or $14 for seniors, students or groups of 10 or more and can be purchased online at the Sunset Players website (www.sunsetplayers.org) or at the door. Tickets can also be reserved by calling 513-588-4988.

SSP_logoSunset Players is holding auditions for DOROTHY MEET ALICE OR THE WIZARD OF WONDERLAND by Joseph Robinette on Sunday, September 20 at 3 pm and Monday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Arts Center at Dunham. The Arts Center at Dunham is located at 1945 Dunham Way, Cincinnati, OH 45238.

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Inc., the annual holiday children’s show is delightful meeting of two of literature’s most famous young ladies after a young man puts off a book report till the last minute, then suddenly finds himself in a strange place somewhere between Oz and Wonderland. It then becomes his responsibility to unscramble the stories and steer the familiar characters—the Cowardly Lion, the Mad Hatter, the Scarecrow and the White Rabbit, among others—to their ultimate destinations while avoiding the Wicked Witch and the Red Queen.

Auditions will be a cold read from the script. Roles are for 11 characters:

  • Young boy: About 12-14 yr. old, procrastinator and adventuresome.
  • Alice: from Alice in Wonderland, just a little dopey.
  • Dorothy: from the Wizard of Oz. mostly just lost.
  • Tin Man: from Wizard of Oz, looking for a heart.
  • The Scarecrow: from Wizard of Oz, wishing for a brain.
  • The Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz, cowardly.
  • The Mad Hatter: from Wonderland, zany and crazy.
  • The Doormouse from Wonderland. Not at all timid.
  • The March Hare: from Wonderland, in a rush.
  • The Queen of Hearts: from Wonderland, mean and nasty but misunderstood.
  • The Wicked Witch: from Wizard of Oz, mean and nasty but misunderstood.

All skills levels and ages are welcome for this workshop production in which you can learn about live theater and hone your acting or tech skills.

Performance dates will be Dec. 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Friday shows are at 7:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday performances at 2:00 p.m.
