THE FOOD CHAIN on Aug. 8

Queen City Queen Theatre Collective
Aug. 8
Below Zero Lounge [Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin

Cast: Becca Howell as Amanda,  Lori Kirstein as Bea,  Dylan McGill as Ford, Andrew Ian Adams as Serge &  Mike Hall as Otto

Amanda, an anorexic poet of some pretensions, has been married for three weeks, but her husband, Ford, has been missing for two. She calls a crisis hot line and reaches Bea, a volunteer. Bea’s answer to Amanda’s problems is to diminish them by complaining about her own deceased husband’s inattentiveness, her son’s embarrassing nature, and also to dispense hilarious (but useless) advice. Just as Amanda nears her wit’s end, Ford walks in so she simply hangs up on Bea. Meanwhile, across town, Serge, a completely vain runway model, paces as he waits for the arrival of his latest paramour. He is intruded upon by a former one-night stand, Otto, who worships him and who tips the scales at about three hundred pounds. Otto tortures, harangues and cajoles Serge while swilling Yoo-hoo, eating junk food and taking phone calls from his mother until Serge can take no more. Serge explodes but is interrupted by a phone call—his new lover will not be coming. This leaves Serge and Otto in the same state: Both are now victims of fickle romance. The scene shifts back to Amanda’s at the crack of dawn. Serge is banging on the door, looking for his lover, surprising Amanda. It was with Serge that Ford had spent his lost two honeymoon weeks. Having followed Serge, it isn’t long until Otto shows up, with breakfast, threatening suicide. Next to arrive is Bea, furious at Amanda for hanging up on her as Bea does not tolerate rudeness. As riotous chaos builds, we learn that Bea is Otto’s mother, that Otto and Amanda are old school friends, that Serge will settle for both Amanda and Ford and that Ford has absolutely nothing to say. Bea takes charge and offers a solution. Although short on practicality, it is long on pleasure.

Queen City Queen Theatre Collective
July 11
Below Zero Lounge [Over-the-Rhine]

When you show up to Below Zero on Monday- you won’t know what you’re coming to see… AND NEITHER WILL WE.

This evening of chance features several play snippets and one acts by new and local playwrights- seen for the first time in Cincinnati!

When you enter the cabaret, you’ll put your name in a hat, and the cast for each play will be pulled at random. The fate of the lottery is final- and no adjustments will be made according to the indicated race, age, gender, sexuality etc. of the character.

The readings will be done cold with a group of cast mates meeting each other that night!

If you’re a playwright interested in new works, if you’re an actor looking to brush up your skills, or just an audience member who loves the perils of live theatre, this is sure to be a great and unpredictable night! Advisory: Adult themes and language.

Please note: performance is in the second floor Cabaret space, which is not handicap accessible.

Free, donations accepted.

Submission Needed for FLYING BLIND

QCQTC_logoTAKING SHORT SUBMISSIONS FOR JULY 11th READING!

We still need a few more play snippets for FLYING BLIND next week.

Creative types! We want your original play snippets for our upcoming event: FLYING BLIND: a casting lottery.

We are looking for selections 10-20 minutes in length that could be:

  • a complete, independent scene or one act
  • selections from a full length work

Our purpose here is to give local and emerging playwrights a chance to expose their work, and also try out some ideas on a small scale for work they may want to develop.

We will select 4-6 play snippets to be read aloud by a cast of audience members- chosen at random that night.

*In the spirit of queering our theatre experience, there will be no restrictions or redrawing of the cast according to gender/sexuality/race/age etc. We encourage your work to be unaffected by the fate of the lottery- or hope that you will otherwise be open to the fluid possibility of how your characters are cast.

Please forward any submissions or questions to lindseyamercer@gmail.com.

Submissions are due no later than July 6th. If chosen, artists will be notified by Saturday July 9th.

We can’t wait to see what you’ve got! 🙂

June 13
Below Zero Lounge [Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Lindsey Augusta Mercer

Cast: Erin Griff Bludworth, Kaleigh Brooke-Dillingham, Hannah Gregory, Andrew Maloney, Erin McCamley, Spenser Smith, & Robert Carlton Stimmel

A new song cycle that explores true stories of suffering, loss, struggle, alienation, friendship, brokenness, love, hate and everything that comes with anxiety and depression disorders. The show combats one of the last great stigmas, giving voice to the people who live it – using the actual words of those for whom this disease is a large part of their lives. At once poignant and touching, this new musical explores the effects of mental illness on our collective minds – and how ignoring it leaves ripples in our social existence.

Queen City Queer Theatre Collective Stages THE ANXIETY PROJECT in June

QCQTC_The Anxiety Project logoThe Queen City Queer Theatre Collective will host a 10-day developmental lab for the new song cycle musical, THE ANXIETY PROJECT. The workshop will culminate in a final public performance on Monday June 13th, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Based on real stories of those suffering with anxiety/depression, this new contemporary musical features book and lyrics by David Brush and music by Rachel Dean. Queen City Queer Theatre Collective co-founder and Artistic Director Lindsey Augusta Mercer will direct the project.

THE ANXIETY PROJECT is described as “a new song cycle that explores true stories of suffering, loss, struggle, alienation, friendship, brokenness, love, hate and everything that comes with anxiety and depression disorders. The show combats one of the last great stigmas, giving voice to the people who live it – using the actual words of those for whom this disease is a large part of their lives. At once poignant and touching, this new musical explores the effects of mental illness on our collective minds – and how ignoring it leaves ripples in our social existence.”

“The project is really a labor of love,” says Brush. “The stigma of mental illness means we are losing more and more people every year to this disease. The Anxiety Project is born from a desire Rachel and I had to give a voice to those who feel the shame and fear that often accompany both the symptoms and the treatment of anxiety/depression.”

The genesis of the show came from submitted stories to a blog series of the same name through Ryan Scott Oliver’s Crazytown. Brush and Dean wrote many of the show’s songs through the blog forum. Cincinnati will represent the show’s first live incarnation. “There’s nothing more helpful for writers than getting to work with actors and seeing new work on its feet,” says Dean. “QCQTC is an integral part of the process of developing new pieces, and we’re so grateful for their work with us and with other writers.”

The cast for the staged musical reading will include: Griff Bludworth, Kaleigh Brooke-Dillingham, Hannah Gregory, Andrew Maloney, Erin McCamley, Spenser Smith, & Robert Carlton.Stimmel.
