Purpose of Position The Visual Arts program in the School of the Arts (SOTA) at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Sculpture. The sculpture program at NKU is part of the Spatial Arts area that offers an approach to artmaking which is media diverse and emphasizes both technical skills and conceptual development. We seek a dynamic teacher that can help grow interest in the area with support from ceramics area coordinator and full-time shop technician. The Visual Arts program offers BA and BFA degrees in Studio Art. The position will begin in August of 2022. We are seeking a dedicated educator-scholar to teach in our dynamic, profession-oriented program. A successful candidate should be knowledgeable and proficient in traditional sculpture, contemporary / interdisciplinary approaches and embrace the expanding fields of sculpture.

The Visual Arts, Music, and Theatre and Dance programs make up the School of the Arts that sit in the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Kentucky University. The Visual Arts Program offers a unique and challenging opportunity for aspiring artists and designers who seek professional training in the arts. All programs of study share a fundamental commitment to the premise that for the next generation of creative artists and educators to face the challenges of the 21st century they must be equipped with the creative and intellectual tools to succeed. Visual Arts Program has 19 full-time faculty and 4 full-time staff that embrace a comprehensive hands-on approach of working with materials and techniques while developing critical thinking skills related to the various visual arts disciplines and studio training. In addition, our NKU Art Galleries serve as a premier venue for the exhibition of high-quality artworks from regional, national, and international artists as well as a creative forum for students, the campus community, and region.

Primary Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach three undergraduate level courses per semester in sculpture (or other art courses to meet program needs and candidate’s expertise); share oversight of curriculum; maintain creative/professional achievement; service to the university, and community. We encourage exploration of diversity through our topics courses and collaboration across the campus and region.

Additional responsibilities include student mentoring, sculpture studio management, portfolio/senior show reviews, and providing direction and guidance for advancing the University’s strategic priorities of inclusive excellence, student retention, and graduation. Spatial Arts is located in a dedicated facility that includes a state of the art woodshop, metal shop, and foundry. Also housed in the facility are wheel throwing and hand building areas, a glaze room, clay mixing room, and kilns. The spatial arts area has a full-time shop technician/project coordinator to assist students and faculty in the use of facilities and equipment.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications include an M.F.A. in sculpture or its equivalent in Sculpture, Studio Arts or another relevant discipline, an active professional creative practice in sculpture, a strong exhibition record, demonstrated knowledge of sculpture techniques, and well versed in contemporary/historical practice. Demonstrated commitment and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cross-cultural perspectives. The position includes opportunities to shape curricula and be part of a team of committed colleagues and dedicated students.

College-level teaching experience preferred.

Purpose of Position The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a Non-Tenure-Track Renewable (NTTR) position teaching piano, overseeing the piano pedagogy degree track, and coordinating the keyboard area within the Music Program, beginning Fall 2022. The Piano Pedagogy track is designed to help pianists and teachers develop skills in the art of teaching piano and in operating a financially successful independent teaching studio. Curriculum is structured to the study of teaching materials and approaches for students at all levels and in all age groups from preschool children to adults in retirement. Pedagogy classes are interactive and include teaching demonstrations by faculty and students, guest lectures and field trips to independently owned music schools for observation. Faculty responsibilities include teaching, program and school-level service, and academic mentoring. As a NASM accredited program, teaching responsibilities adhere to loads as prescribed by NASM.

The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University offers a wide array of degree programs in the visual and performing arts. The Music Program within the School of the Arts offers a BME in Music Education (Choral/Vocal and Instrumental), a BM in Performance (Instrumental, Jazz Studies, Piano Pedagogy, and Voice) a BM in Composition, and a BA in Music (Liberal Studies and Audio Production).   • The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the recruitment and retention of a diverse student and faculty population.
  • The candidate must demonstrate experience in organization and leadership. Additional consideration will be given to teaching and/or leadership responsibilities at the collegiate level.
  • The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to teaching. Applicant must demonstrate an acumen to applied instruction. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with group piano instructional experience.
  • The candidate must demonstrate a high level of performance ability and experience in either piano solo work or accompaniment.

NKU SOTA Postpones Dates for Remaining Theatre & Dance Season

NKU_SOTA logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts (NKU SOTA) will be postponing its remaining spring 2022 productions by one week as a precaution for the campus and community due to recent COVID cases fueled by the Omicron variant. This includes the regional premiere of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, moved to Feb. 25–March 6, 2022; the 20th Anniversary of the YES Festival of new plays, moved to April 7-17, 2022; and Dance ’22 will run April 22-24, 2022. Tickets for each production will be available about one month prior to their respective openings. NKU School of the Arts Hosts Winter Dance Intensive

NKU_SOTA logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts announces the launch of the inaugural Winter Dance Intensive, a three-day pre-professional Dance Institute for Artists in the Making.

Participants will experience immersive dance training with regional and national guest artists that run their own companies. Throughout the intensive, they will receive industry and technical training in advanced ballet and modern technique and repertory work, and gain insight into multiple performance opportunities in dance. Sessions will be held in a new state-of-the-art dance studio on NKU’s campus.

The registration deadline is Jan. 1, 2022, and is limited to 30 participants. The registration fee is $25, and the program fee is $300 (reduced tuition may be available). Video audition submission is required for participation. The program leads include Tracey Bonner, Megan Flynn, and Missy Lay-Zimmer & Andrew Hubbard.
