| Purpose of Position | Northern Kentucky University is seeking a Programs and Production Assistant for the School of the Arts. The School of the Arts (SOTA) at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a full-time staff position assisting the Programs and productions beginning in the Summer of 2022. This position provides administrative support to SOTA and its three programs by coordinating front line services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors; scheduling appointments and meetings, assisting with room reservations, filing, researching files and records, preparing documents for request; oversee office work-study students in the program’s offices. Serves as Production Manager for SOTA productions, primarily in the Theatre + Dance Program.
The Art & Design, Music, and Theatre + Dance programs make up the School of the Arts that sits in the College of Arts and Science at Northern Kentucky University. Through quality interdisciplinary education, scholarship, and civic engagement, NKU’s School of the Arts provides high-quality education for students interested in developing creatively. SOTA encourages serious humanistic inquiry that is not easily achieved within traditional disciplinary boundaries, heightens the visibility of the arts at NKU, and provides the public with an awareness of the central role of the arts in the quality of human life. Currently SOTA has over 900 students and host 136 events each year. With 12 majors, more than 30 specializations to study and 15 regional arts partners, NKU’s transdisciplinary School of the Arts is a powerhouse of the visual and performing arts in the Midwest. | Qualifications | Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in the performing arts with 3 years of related management experience. While no formal production management experience is required for this position, it is necessary to be familiar with theatre and dance through some aspect of work experience or college study. Stage management or other theatre management training and experience is also highly preferred to be successful in this role. Impeccable organizational skills and demonstrated communication skills are required. Detail oriented and efficient in managing day to day tasks. Basic computer skills including email and familiarity with Microsoft Office 365 suite.

| Primary Responsibilities | Primary responsibilities are to provide leadership of the NKU band program, to recruit and maintain appropriate instrumentation for a balanced band program, and to conduct the Symphonic Winds and Concert Band. Additional duties will be assigned based on the candidate’s strengths and the needs of the program. Secondary teaching areas may include conducting, methods courses (brass, woodwinds, and/or marching band techniques), instrumentation and scoring, and music theory.

Master’s degree required, additional education (Ph.D. or DMA), and experience preferred. Candidates with a strong background/interest in music education, along with successful teaching experience (college and/or K-12), are highly desirable. Preference is given to candidates who have experience cultivating positive and collaborative relationships (with area band directors, faculty, and students) and the ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and goals. VIOLET | Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2022
As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved she’s traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. Winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, Violet is a moving musical featuring show-stopping anthems, ranging from American-roots to folk to gospel.
DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE | Oct. 27-Nov. 6, 2022
Dr. Jekyll is a kind, well-respected and intelligent scientist who explores the darker side of science, as he wants to bring out his ‘second’ nature. His experiments transform himself into Mr. Hyde – his evil alter ego who doesn’t repent or accept responsibility for his evil crimes and ways. Jekyll tries to control his alter ego, Hyde, and for a while, Jekyll has the power. The struggle to keep his alternate nature contained leads Dr. Jekyll down a path of death and destruction in this Gothic thriller. This exciting stage adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a narrative about the complexities of science and the duplicity of human nature.
PETER & THE STARCATCHER | Dec. 2-11, 2022
A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training. They discover a mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin containing starstuff, a powerful, celestial substance. When the ship is taken over by pirates determined to claim the trunk and its treasure, the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. TWELFTH NIGHT | Feb. 16-26, 2023
Shipwrecked on the shores of the strange land, Illyria, Viola believes herself alone in the world and her twin brother drowned. Disguising herself as a boy to work in the court of Illyria’s Count Orsino, Viola discovers her male disguise has proven all too effective: Orsino sends her as a go-between in his persistent love-suit to the unresponsive Countess Olivia. Even as Viola solicits for Olivia’s love on Orsino’s behalf, Viola falls in love with Orsino herself. What ensues is a cross-dressing comedy rife with pain and triumph, humor and madness, transformation and redemption. Twelfth Night or, What You Will, is one of the most structurally perfect comedies ever written and beloved by audiences.

Featuring a company of our best young dance artists, along with new and innovative works created by faculty, guest artists, and nationally renowned choreographers, Dance ’23 has something for everyone – contemporary dance forms that include modern, jazz, and African/Afro-Fusion.
Finally, after much discussion and consideration, NKU SOTA has made the difficult decision to permanently end its Summer Dinner Theatre programming. During the past few years, the Commonwealth Theatre Company was unable to produce the summer dinner theatre productions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other related challenges. For over 35 years, CTC produced over 80 productions for the NKU community, performing around the country and the world. NKU SOTA extends its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and loyal guests, staff, and performers that have created so many memories over the years. NKU To Host Benefit Concert For Ukrainian Refugees
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY- In light of the tragic events transpiring in Ukraine, Northern Kentucky University will welcome back two world-renowned pianists and NKU alums on April 22 for a concert to benefit Ukrainian refugees in the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati community.
Ukraine natives Anna Shelest (’05) and Dmitri Shelest (’05, ’08) will return to campus and the Greaves Concert Hall to perform works by Ukrainian and American composers. NKU School of the Arts string musicians and members of the NKU Chamber Choir will also perform. The Shelests hail from the city of Kharkiv which is a sister city of Cincinnati. “Our hearts continue to be with the people of Ukraine through this tragic time,” NKU President Ashish Vaidya said. “NKU is fortunate to have such incredibly talented alums in Anna and Dimitri. Hosting the concert with their help, allows us to support two excellent organizations aimed at welcoming Ukrainian refugees in our community.”
All proceeds from the concert will benefit Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Refugee Connect. The concert is sponsored by Duke Energy and Vincent Lighting Systems (VLS).
Anna Shelest is an international award-winning pianist who The New York Times has hailed as a pianist with a “fiery sensibility and warm touch.” With her husband Dmitri, the couple recorded an album titled “Ukrainian Rhapsody,” which features works for two hands and four hands by Ukrainian composers. The Shelests have performed with world-class orchestras across the globe, including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
