NET Announces 16th Season: Best Laid Plans

NETNew Edgecliff Theatre announced today their lineup for the 2013-14 Season, themed “The Best Laid Plans.”

Artistic Director Jim stump says, “It’s a story as old as time. We plan out our days, our weeks and even our lives, but no matter how carefully and meticulously, something always seems to get in the way. Sometimes only a minor adjustment is needed to circumvent the obstacle. Other times, a whole new course must be laid. The plays in our 16th season all deal with plans that are disrupted and the ways these disruptions are handled.”

A journey is literally waylaid as a bus is stranded at a diner in a snowstorm in William Inge’s Bus Stop. Each of the passengers, as well as the inhabitants of the diner, is certain of the path his or her life is taking. But this one evening’s chance encounter with each other will change their lives forever.

In Gina Hoben’s The 12 Dates of Christmas, a young woman’s world is turned upside down when she sees her fiancé kissing another woman on national television. She now sets out to navigate the world of dating with several course changes along the way. When she finally resolves to give up, even that plan can’t last.

Other People’s Money by Jerry Sterner examines what is perhaps the biggest game changer in contemporary American life–Wall Street. As a smarmy Wall Street takeover artist targets a small but long-established family company, he finds that plans to change other people’s lives come with changes of their own.

Tickets on sale beginning August 5th.
Adults $25.25, Seniors $20.25, and Students $17.25
Special pricing for Sweet Suspense, $35 includes dessert buffet

Bus Stop
by William Inge
Directed by Jared Doren
September 18-28, 2013
at the Fifth Third Bank Theatre, Aronoff Center

In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning.

Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. This belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she’s ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana …” As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance.

The 12 Dates of Christmas
by Ginna Hoben
Remounted by Jim Stump
December 11-21, 2013
at a venue to be announced

After seeing her fiancé kiss another woman at the televised Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mary’s life falls apart – just in time for the holidays. Over the next year, she stumbles back into the dating world, where “romance” ranges from weird and creepy to absurd and comical. It seems nothing can help Mary’s growing cynicism, until the charm and innocence of a five-year-old boy unexpectedly brings a new outlook on life and love. This heartwarming one-woman play offers a hilarious and modern alternative to the old standards of the holiday season. Featuring the return of Annie Kalahurka in her LCT-nominated performance.

Other People’s Money

Directed by Greg Proccacino
April 16-26, 2014
at the Fifth Third Bank Theatre, Aronoff Center
Winner! Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play

Wall Street takeover artist Lawrence Garfinkle’s computer is going tilt over the undervalued stock of New England Wire & Cable. If the stockholders back his takeover, they will make a bundle but what will happen to the 1200 employees and the community when he liquidates the assets? Opposing the rapacious financier are the genial man who has run the company since the year one and his chief operations officer. They bring in a young lawyer who specializes in fending off takeovers. Should she use green mail? Find a white knight? Employ a shark repellent? This compelling drama explores whether corporate raiders are creatures from the Black Lagoon of capitalism or realists.

Sweet Suspense Radio Drama Fundraiser: Frankenstein
adapted by Catie O’Keefe/Directed by Bob Allen
Saturday, October 19, 2013
venue to be announced

The horror classic is brought to life in the theatre of the mind with New Edgecliff Theatre’s radio theatre performance of “Frankenstein”, adapted from the book by Mary Shelley. As our actors, along with live sound effects, retell the story of reanimating the dead, the story takes on a new dimension, with each audience member conjuring up their own unique vision of the monster.

Big Changes at New Edgecliff

Shooner steps aside as Executive Director

New Edgecliff Theatre announced today that founder Michael Shooner will no longer be serving as Executive Director. He will, however, continue to serve on the board of NET, while the Executive Director position will be combined with that of Artistic Director, creating a new position, Producing Artistic Director, to be taken on by current AD Jim Stump.

Shooner established New Edgecliff in 1998 (becoming its first Artistic Director) in hopes of reincarnating the professional standards he had first experienced in the wake of David Barrie’s resident Equity company at Edgecliff College in the 1970s. His first acting job with NET (Eric Bogosian’s Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll) earned him a CEA nomination for Best Actor. He appeared the subsequent season in the critically acclaimed The Woolgatherer, but did not return to the NET stage again for another 6 years. “That was odd”, he says, “because I had at least in part wanted to create a place where I knew I could work as an actor without having to wait for the phone to ring” (during those “dark” years, he did make a few appearances at Cincy Shakes). When Elizabeth A. Harris became the new AD, she put Shooner back on the NET stage as Teach in American Buffalo, which earned him an Acclaim Award as well as another CEA nomination. In the 7 years since, he’s managed four more appearances at NET: Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross, Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, Dysart in Equus and the Man in St. Nicholas. He’s also appeared opposite Dale Hodges in the Xavier University production of Frozen, which earned him another Acclaim Award.

During his years at NET, there have been 48 main stage productions mounted, 7 of which were co-productions, as well as the annual Sweet Suspense radio-theatre shows, three Fringe appearances and three editions of the Cincinnati Director’s Competition. Of which productions is he most proud? “First off, the easiest way to answer that question is to say I could count on one hand those shows that would not be in the running, but if pressed for favorites, I’d have to point to Equus, I Stand Before You Naked, American Buffalo, Square One, Lives of the Saints and Death of a Salesman. All these productions were perfect reflections of NET’s commitment to the reductive notion that in its finest distillation, theatre requires no more or less than strong actors telling a compelling story; where any requisite production elements, while executed to the highest professional standards, are rigorously dedicated to supporting that notion rather than competing with it.”

Shooner feels the move is imperative not only for him personally, but also for the continued growth and health of the NET organization. As he puts it, “15 years of improvising in the role of an arts administrator qualifies as the longest and most challenging acting gig of my life! I’m hoping to make room now for some other roles.” At the same time, as NET moves to the next level (he promises more on that very soon), he says “a much surer hand is needed up front, and Jim Stump has proven himself eminently capable in that regard.” As a member of the NET board, Shooner will continue to work behind the scenes, initially helping with the transition to the new staff structure. Of course, as far as acting goes, he’s now looking forward to being able to get on the NET stage “more than once every couple years.”

Mr. Stump, who just completed his third season as Artistic Director, is well known and respected in the Cincinnati theatre community. He earned his B.A. in Theatre from Indiana University and went on to graduate from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. As a performer, he has appeared frequently on multiple area stages, including Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Know Theatre, Stage First, New Stage Collective, the Carnegie Theatre, Human Race Theatre, as well as New Edgecliff. He served as President of the League of Cincinnati Theatres from 2005-09, and continues as member-at-large. He’s chalked up administrative theatre experience with such organizations as Cincinnati Costume Company, Cincinnati Arts Association, Madcap Productions and The Whodunnit? Players.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized New Edgecliff Theatre’s production of Proof with an LCT nomination for lead actress, Rebecca Whatley.

On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness — or genius — will she inherit?

Panelists praised Rebecca Whatley’s portrayal of Catherine as “natural and unforced”; “a touching mixture of bewilderment, bravado, and brokenness that commanded my attention and did not let up.”

Proof continues through April 27th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.cincinnatiarts.org.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. More information about the League can be found at www.leagueofcincytheatres.com.

The script primarily focuses on Catherine, a troubled young woman who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father Robert, a famous mathematician.
