LCT panelists give a 4-star recommendation to “Little Dog Laughed” currently presented by New Edgecliff Theatre in Northside.

Panelists describe this comedy which “blends a subtle look at the fear of expressing love with a fierce satire of skittishness about homosexuality. Under director Lindsey Augusta Mercer the fine cast makes potentially stereotypical characters credible.”

“This production deserves to be seen by very full houses!” lauds an LCT panelist. Another panelist adds “A fine production of a fascinating, smart, hilarious, biting, and incisive script by Douglass Carter Beane.”

The show runs now through October 11 and is performed at The Hoffner Lodge, 4120 Hamilton Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45223. For tickets call 1.888.428.7311 or go to http://newedgecliff.com/season/the-little-dog-laughed/

New Edgecliff Theatre begins their new season with a well-done and enjoyable production of THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED written by Douglas Carter Beane.

Director Lindsey Mercer makes excellent use of the Hoffner Lodge space, and has cast a strong four-person ensemble to bring the story to life.

Jared Earland as Alex & Nic Pajic as Mitchell.

Kemper Florin is funny and appropriately cut-throat as Hollywood agent Diane. The opening monologue could use a bit more of the Diane “snark” that works so well for the character throughout the rest of the play. The restaurant scene with Diane and Mitch (Nic Pajic) is hysterical and a highlight of the show.

The relationship between Mitch and Alex (played by Jared Earland) works well for the most part. Mitch’s loneliness includes a physical component, so I would have liked to see physical contact during their first night together (some form of snuggling) instead of them falling asleep looking at each other. Also, during the “honeymoon phase,” I wouldn’t mind seeing a little more physical contact between the two.  Also, the actors may want to cheat the confrontations a bit closer to the pole so it doesn’t look like Mitch is steering Alex across the room.

Vocally, Earland is not projecting at the same level as the rest of the cast. This becomes more apparent when three or four characters are on stage. Also a few character choices would help differentiate Alex from the character Earland played recently in “Funeral” as part of SERIALS! at Know Theatre.

Erin Ward does solid work and is easily believable as the emotional roller coaster that is Ellen. As two damaged-by-life kindred souls, Ellen and Alex’s relationship plays out well between the two actors.

On the technical side, in several of the crosses between playing areas, the actors would step into shadow and then the lights in the new area would come up, making the cue look late. The pre-show music was a bit loud and made conversations a difficult. The sound level during the production was right on the money.

The strong cast, smart direction and excellent script makes for a very enjoyable comedy that actually makes you laugh out loud. Great job.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.

My rating: 4.25 out of 5

New Edgecliff Theatre opens its 2014-15 Season with THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED by Douglas Carter Beane − a contemporary comedy about relationships and image in Hollywood. The players in this tabloid age story include a hard-driving Hollywood agent, her budding screen idol client, a sexy young drifter, and the drifter’s naive, needy girlfriend.

THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED follows the adventures of Mitchell Green, a movie star who could hit big if it weren’t for one teensy-weensy problem. His agent, Diane, can’t seem to keep him in the closet. Trying to help him navigate Hollywood’s choppy waters, the devilish Diane is doing all she can to keep Mitchell away from the cute rent boy Alex who’s caught his eye. Meanwhile, the rent boy’s girlfriend Ellen (wait, the rent boy has a girlfriend?) has problems of her own. Will there be a happy ending as the final credits roll? Featuring Nic Pajic, Kemper Florin, Jared Earland and Erin Ward.

The production is directed by Lindsey Augusta Mercer who served as Assistant Director last season on NET’s productions of Bus Stop, The 12 Dates of Christmas and Other People’s Money. She recently graduated from Baldwin Wallace University with a BA in Theatre and History. In the summer of 2013 she was chosen to participate in a Directing intensive at the Kennedy Center. She recently returned from a summer of Opera in Arezzo, Italy, where she had the pleasure of working on amazing pieces such as La Rondine, I Capuleti e Montecchi and Cosí Fan Tutte.

The show runs September 25 to October 11 at the Hoffner Lodge located at 4120 Hamilton Avenue in Northside. New Edgecliff Theatre will be moving to their new facility on Blue Rock Street in Northside later next month but they wanted to start the season in their new neighborhood. Hoffner Lodge has hosted theatrical productions in the past including Les Belles-sœurs. The Hoffner Masonic Lodge is in the heart of the business and entertainment district of Northside, and is one of the many historic treasures designed by Cincinnati architect, Samuel Hannaford.
