At tonight’s opening performance of BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS, Artistic Driector Andrew Hungerford announced the next show of their season.

It is THE HANDMAID’S TALE by Margaret Atwood, adapted for the stage by Joe Stollenwerk. The world premiere of this production was presented by Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in April 2011 as a season extra for nine performances only. That run of the one-woman show was directed by Brian Isaac Phillips and starred Corrine Mohlenhoff. Both are returning for the fully-staged production at Know Theatre of Cincinnati.

I was lucky enough to attend a performance and it was an extremely well-done. Well-written, directed and acted. I look forward to seeing it again. Below I have pulled some information about Stollenwerk and that production from the original press release.

The author, Joe Stollenwerk is originally from Cincinnati where he spent nearly ten years as the Artistic Director of Ovation Theatre Company. A vibrant member of the local theater community, Mr. Stollenwerk has also directed and/or acted with Cincinnati Music Theatre, Covedale Theatre, Cincinnati Playwright Initiative and Madisonville Arts Center. It was during this time in Cincinnati, that Mr. Stollenwerk and Ms. Mohlenhoff first met and began working with each other actually inspiring Mr. Stollenwerk to create this piece with Corinne in mind during the process.

“I first read The Handmaid’s Tale in a course on feminism and utopia/dystopia in literature in 2002. This was in the wake of 9/11 and it seemed that our country might all too easily be teetering on the brink of something reminiscent of Gilead from this novel. I immediately began thinking about turning it into a play, despite the fact that this seemed an insurmountable task. Then I remembered that one of my favorite genres of plays is the one-woman show, and that was that.” Mr. Stollenwerk began with a draft in 2006 which was well over six hours long. “I cut, and cut, and cut, always trying to be mindful that I wanted to preserve the plot and characters but also the social/political commentary as well as the marvelous language Atwood employs.”

The artistic process continued and Mr. Stollenwerk invited close friends over for informal readings of the script in his living room throughout 2007. “Finally, I felt ready to give Corinne a draft of the script, and in May of 2009 we did a staged reading here at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. I’m so pleased that I was finally able to secure the rights to have a production staged and to present the world premiere right here in Cincinnati, OH.”

I will post more details on the upcoming production when they become available.

Know Theatre’s Season Continues with BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS

KNOW THEATRE’S ADAPTATION SEASON CONTINUES WITH
BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS
By Lila Rose Kaplan

Directed by Tamara Winters

People don’t just disappear.

A blue scarf.
A piece of chalk.
A pocketful of leaves.

KTC_Bureau of Missing PersonsThese clues lead Angela on a quest from her New York apartment to a cave in Moscow in search of someone missing. Inspired by the magical realism of Jorge Luis Borges, Bureau of Missing Personsexplores what it takes to come back to life when you’ve been smothered by grief.

Performances of BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS run November 29 – December 20.

Directed by Know Theatre Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters in her MainStage directing debut,BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is a poignant tale of loss and redemption. Part mystery, part love story,BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is full of surprising imagery and unexpected storytelling—making it a perfect show for the Know.

BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS features a stellar ensemble cast of Cincinnati actors. Starring as Angela is Kate Glasheen, last seen at the Know in 2013’s Bull. Joining her as Angela’s beleaguered fiancé Richard is Rico Reid, alongside Sam Ray as Simon, a kindergarten teacher swept up into Angela’s voyage to Moscow. Rico and Sam last appeared as Ahab and Ishmael in Moby Dick. Adrianne Underhill, previously seen 2013’s in When the Rain Stops Falling, returns to the Know as Angela’s feisty mother Vivian. Rounding out the cast is Know Theatre audience favorite Burgess Byrd as the mischievous and enigmatic Patrice.

In keeping with the magical realism style that inspired this tale, Lila Rose Kaplan has created a world in which realistic, believable characters find themselves in impossible scenarios of imagination and wonder. Director Tamara Winters says, “We are crafting an experience where the audience’s imaginations can make whimsical leaps, all while exploring relationships that resound; connections that mirror our own desires. With this powerful cast and this poetic little script, I can promise our audience a night of magic, mischief, joy, and redemption. It is an elegant story of how we heal, and one I believe isperfectly timed for the holidays.”

Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford adds, “I first heard a reading of this play in 2009, and ever since I’ve been looking for a way to produce it. It’s the kind of script that calls to be staged, and it’s exciting to have that become a reality with this fantastic cast and production team.”

BUREAU OF MISSING PERSONS is a regional premiere, only the second full production of this charming play, and the first outside of New York. It runs November 29 – December 20 at Know Theatre. This production’s imaginative staging, beautiful imagery, and moving performances will make it a show to remember.

One Night, Two Fringe Encores: THE WAVE and NOTHING

KTC_The Wave and NothingOne night, two shows, one performer, two stages.

Jon Kovach will be performing two of his critically-acclaimed one man shows on the same evening at The Know Theatre of Cincinnati. Nov. 17th.

THE WAVE by Ron Jones
Mon. Nov. 17th @ 8p
The Know Theatre- Underground Stage

At 8p Jon Kovach will portray the high school teacher Ron Jones from his ’13 Cincinnati Fringe hit THE WAVE, on The Underground Stage at The Know Theatre of Cincinnati.

Based on a true story THE WAVE by Ron Jones, is a narrative about a young 1960’s California history teacher who wanted to deter his students from the allure of totalitarianism. His daring social experiment succeeded beyond his wildest expectations, creating a fascist state on campus. Replete with salutes and Gestapo-like informants, 30 students grew to 200 as this exercise in fascism spiraled out of control. The “experiment” illustrates how individual freedoms can be quickly abandoned and willfully repressed for collective goals and racism as happened in the rise of Nazi Germany and the treatment of the Jews during World War II.

NOTHING by Nic Balthazar
Mon. Nov. 17th @ 9:30p
The Know Theatre- Mainstage

At 9:30p Kovach will play the high school student Ben from his inter-regionally award-winning production NOTHING by Nic Balthazar.

Inspired by true events, NOTHING is a multi-media production featuring Ben, a young wordsmith/technology enthusiast with autism. Using poetry, music, and video, Ben shares his story of meeting “Barbie” in a divine online connection, standing up to his high school bullies, and finding ways to fit into a “normal” world.

At intermission, Jon Kovach will be shaving his beard (which has gotten quite long from his current role in The Know Theatre of Cincinnati’s MOBY DICK).

This event is being held as possibly the last time that these productions will be performed for the Cincinnati public.

Additionally, Kovach will be touring THE WAVE around as private performances around Cincinnati (National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, local high schools), and on Nov. 19th, will be performing NOTHING by Nic Balthazar in the United Solo Theatre Festival in NYC.
