Second Weekend Bigger and Fringier!

CF19_logoCINCINNATI, June 7 – The Cincinnati Fringe Festival roars into its second weekend! The performing arts festival that’s Kinda Weird, Like You features a jam-packed schedule of performances and events, with options for all ages and tastes.

Primary Lineup performances continue all weekend, with staggered start times from 2:30 to 9 pm. Each show is an hour or less, giving audiences plenty of choice in how they schedule their days at Fringe. And there’s so much to choose from, with 26 performances on Saturday alone! Productions run the gamut from solo storytelling to dance pieces to conventional plays (although “conventional” is a relative word at Fringe).

Many performances so far this festival have been sold-out or very close to capacity, so patrons are strongly encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance at cincyfringe.com or by calling the box office at 513-300-5669; the box office is open from 11 am to 9:30 pm, Tuesdays through Sundays.

Fringe is all about doing more, so the Fringe doesn’t stop when the Primary Lineup does! There are several options for younger audiences in the Family Friendly Fringe selection. This weekend, they include Storytime with Sparkle, in which one of Cincinnati’s most popular child-friendly drag clowns will read picture books about diversity and acceptance, Show Up, Kids!, a one-man improvised show that incorporates suggestions from young audience members to craft its narrative, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from Madcap Puppets. Showtimes are at 11 am and 1 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, and tickets may be reserved for free at cincyfringe.com.

We’d never forget to mention our late-night lineup of irreverent, unpredictable, but always entertaining Bar Series programming. Every night, we hear from Channel Fringe Hard-Hitting Action News for all the news that’s fit to Fringe, and then launch into special events! This weekend, Friday night is Fringe-oke (that’s karaoke with a Fringy twist!), Saturday night is Fringe Prom: Sweet 16, and Sunday night we honor the artistic community with Everyone’s an Artist Night, where artist discounts at the bar are extended to all patrons.

After all of that, we’re dark on Monday (because Fringe staff will all need the chance to sit in a dim room with a cool beverage for a moment) but then we’ll be back on Tuesday for Fringe’s final week!

CFF19: My Fringe Show Rankings

Updated 6/14/19 11:15am

Picks of the Fringe
As a “critic” I get to nominate productions as my choice for the Critic’s Pick of the Fringe. Below, in alphabetical order, are the shows IMHO currently in the running for nomination.

CFF19_90 Lies an hour1

Paul Strickland. Photo by Paul Kerford Wilson.

90 LIES AN HOUR
Paul Strickland returns with the fourth part of his Trailer Park Trilogy (and no, you don’t need to have seen the previous shows to enjoy this one.) 90 LIES AN HOUR features three new tales written and performed by this talented storyteller which are full of wit, wonderful word play and a bit of down home wisdom. The show is closed out with a song that expertly brings the show full circle.

CFF19_Descent1

Hannah Gregory as The Angel, Tess Talbot as Annie & Wes Carmen as Paul. Photo by Paul Kerford Wilson.

DESCENT: A Murder Ballad
A simple story told incredibly well, punctuated by the haunting and soulful songs performed by Hannah Gregory, who is also responsible for the book and music. Caitlin McWethy’s nuanced direction elicits some wonderful performances from her small, talented cast lead by the wonderful Tess Talbot. The show flowed extremely well, and the small addition and removal of a black jacket made it easy to follow the story as it jumped between past and present.

CFF19_The MILF Also Rises 1

Jen Joplin. Photo by Dan Winters.

THE MILF ALSO RISES
Local actress and “middle-aged mother” Jen Joplin unsurprisingly impresses in her one-person show, THE MILF ALSO RISES. Joplin builds an instant rapport with the audience, giving the show a “hanging with an old friend” vibe that is punctuated with a wry smile, a smart tongue, a bit of self-deprecating humor, and a few slugs of bourbon. The script is timely, smart and insightful without being a lecture.

CFF19_ This House Will Never Let Us Go1

THIS HOUSE WILL NEVER LET US GO
Fringe favorite Gideon Productions returns this year with an unique take on a horror genre staple. Playwright Mac Rogers provides a smartly-written, character-driven script that plays to the strengths of the excellent cast. Together they easily pull the audience into the “House” as the tale builds to a shocking and satisfying conclusion.

CFF19_Zoinks1

Jordan Trovillion as Nolan Blackwell & playwright Trey Tatum as Casper. Photo by Paul Kerford Wilson.

ZOINKS!
Part homage and part satire, ZOINKS is a modern take on the teenage mystery solver (and their trusted canine companion). The staging is incredibly creative and engaging thanks to the directing skills of Bridget Leak. So engaging in fact, that several audience members are asked to lend their voices to the story. Jordan Trovillion is excellent as Nolan Blackwell, the teenage sleuth who would rather confront monsters and mysteries than the realities of her home. Tatum also takes on the role of Casper, Nolan’s four-legged partner in crime-solving, a friend so true that you will make you miss your own pup. A truly remember-able Fringe experience.

My Fringe Show Rankings
While all shows cannot be a “pick,” there are plenty of strong and enjoyable productions to choose from for your fringe adventure. Below I am ranking the other shows I’ve attended to date, based on a number of criteria from the voices in my head. 🙂 Please understand that differences between shows in the rankings can be infinitesimal. Update 6/5. I’ve split out the solo performances into their own list.

  • CFF19_Kill You With My Love1

Sarah Willis as Kay in KILL YOU WITH MY LOVE. Photo by Kyle Chaney.

    KILL YOU WITH MY LOVE
A solid ensemble brings this tale of a cursed love life to life on stage. As she packs to flee another possible tragedy, the classic rock records Kay plays summons the haunting memories of her late lovers.

  • MARTHA
Local actor and playwright Sean P. Mette smartly fictionalizes the final years of Martha. Born in captivity, this Cincinnati Zoo resident was the last surviving passenger pigeon in existence. Does knowing you are the last of your kind bring any comfort?
  • THE CONSCIOUSNESS
  • LIVE NUKES
  • VEGETABLES
  • SUFFER FOOLS

Get Vengeful at the Regional Premiere of Steve Yockey’s MERCURY at the Know

KTC_Mercury MontageRevenge is a dish best served bloody in
MERCURY
a very dark comedy by Steve Yockey
April 19 – May 11

If Hellraiser were a sitcom, it might be like this play.

Know Theatre is delighted to close our 21st MainStage season with a return to the world of playwright Steve Yockey, with the regional premiere of MERCURY.

Yockey, co-producer and writer on TV’s Supernatural and the brilliant brain behind past Know Theatre favorites including Pluto, The Fisherman’s Wife, and Heavier Than…, now brings us a pitch-black comic romp about what happens when people stop being nice and start getting vengeful.

From jilted lovers to nosy neighbors, marauding bears, and a missing dog named Mr. Bundles, MERCURY uncovers what’s bubbling underneath the surface of suburban niceties.

As the play unfolds, three storylines converge around the strangest curiosity shop in Portland. Because, when simmering grudges reach their boiling point, this shop’s proprietor has just the right items to help feuding parties bury the hatchet.

The Know team is thrilled to bring back some of our favorite comic talents and welcome two new faces to the Know MainStage for this twisted tale of vengeance.

OTRimprov’s impish Eileen Earnest returns to the Know as the busybody-with-a-heart-of-stone Olive. We’ve paired her up once more with Andrew Ian Adams and James Creque, who together dazzled and disoriented audiences in Steve Yockey’s 2016 Know hit The Fisherman’s Wife. Olive just wants to get closer to her new neighbor Nick (played by Creque), but his live-in boyfriend Brian (played by Adams) is just always… in the way.

Elizabeth Molloy makes her second MainStage appearance as Heather, opposite newcomer to the Know MainStage Robyn Novak as Pamela. When their already fraught friendship takes a darker turn, Heather decides she’s ready to take drastic measures to get life back to normal.

Tess Talbot returns after her memorable leading role in 2018’s Ada & the Engine as Alicia, who is happy to help Olive and Heather solve their vexing personal troubles using a little special something from her very special store.

But when her boyfriend “Sam” (played by Patrick Phillips in his Know MainStage debut) gets wind, there’s going to be Hell to pay.

Know Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Andrew J. Hungerford directs the manic chaos of this deeply funny, deeply dark comic adventure. He first encountered Yockey’s script in advance of its premiere in 2017 and it proved a perfect fit to close our 21st season where we’ve been exploring the idea of “Fear Itself” all year.

Says Hungerford,

“Steve writes the kind of plays that from the first lines make me say ‘I want to see THAT onstage!’ They’re so theatrical, so compelling, and such a delightful challenge to make a reality. I want to design them all. That’s not possible, but getting to design or direct one every few years is a pretty good consolation. And I can’t wait for audiences to see this.”

MERCURY is the fourth of Steve Yockey’s plays we’ve tackled on the MainStage since 2012 – and to celebrate, you have a chance to meet the playwright himself, thanks to the Dramatists’ Guild Foundation’s Traveling Masters Program!

The Traveling Masters is a nationwide education program providing master classes and events on the craft of writing. Participants interact with luminaries of the modern stage, allowing them to learn, ask questions, and develop their talents with input from experts. Previous Masters include eminent writers such as Annie Baker, Pearl Cleage, Melissa James Gibson, Terrence McNally, Dael Orlandersmith, Anne Washburn, and many other award-winning writers.

Yockey will be joining us on Saturday, April 20 for a student playwrights’ workshop at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for CCM students, a special invited playwrights’ workshop here at the Know, followed by the 8 PM performance and a post-show talkback open to the public.

If you enjoyed his exploration of death in 2012’s PLUTO, the over-the-top sex farce of 2016’s The Fisherman’s Wife, or the reimagining of the myth of the minotaur in 2017’s Heavier Than… , we know you’ll love getting to know Steve Yockey in this intimate post-show Q&A session.

In a world where people very rarely seem to get what they deserve, MERCURY is a satisfying romp where karma has a wicked sense of humor.

Mercury runs April 19 – May 11, only at Your Theatrical Playground, Know Theatre of Cincinnati.
