HRTC_MameMAME
Presented by Human Race Theatre Company
Oct. 30-Nov. 23
Dayton

Directed by Kevin Moore

Mame Dennis is a free-wheeling eccentric without a care until she becomes the guardian of her ten-year-old nephew, Patrick. Now it’s up to her to open new windows and show the boy worlds he never knew existed. Through the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression, Mame teaches Patrick how to “live, live, live”—whether he’s willing or not. It’s the dazzling Broadway musical that proves life’s a banquet, featuring the classic songs “We Need a Little Christmas,” “It’s Today,” “Bosom Buddies” and, of course, “Mame.”

MIRACLE ON SOUTH DIVISION STREET presented by the Human Race Theatre Company through Sept. 21. More information.

HTRC kicks off their 2014-2015 season with the family comedy, MIRACLE ON SOUTH DIVISION STREET. As with playwright’s Tom Dudzick other play, Over the Tavern, the family’s Catholic faith is an important element to the plot. This is not to say that you have to be Catholic to enjoy the show, but if you are, you may get a few more chuckles and guffaws for your money.

Director Richard E. Hess gives the production a nice, honest feel. The characters are real and believable as a family and the dynamic between its members works well. The blocking is solid with good stage pictures no matter where you are sitting. Fun staging throughout the show, such as the argument that leaves and returns to the stage, and good pacing keep the energy up.

The set works well for play areas and sight lines. The generic “modern” look with the refuse-to-die, older appliances works well. I was a bit confused on the setting of the play though. The clothing is non-specific, the cell phones are dated, yet the program lists the time as early Autumn, present day.

The slightly, out-there premise and talkie-ness of the script could go south quickly without a talented ensemble. Thankfully that is not a problem here.

Lauren Ashley Carter and Kyle Nunn play the younger Nowak siblings, Ruth and Jimmy. Both are UC College-Conservatory of Music alums, and their common past serves well in creating a strong bond between the two characters. Their scenes together are very natural and have a good energy to them.

Jennifer Joplin enters like a hurricane as older sister Beverly. She seems more partner in crime to mother Clara, than daughter. With that dynamic, it’s easy to understand the friction between sisters Beverly and Ruth.

Rounding out the cast as the mother is Wendy Barrie-Wilson. Her Clara is obviously of devout, stubborn, stout stock. As the family patriarch, there were a few times I felt she could have been more stern. In the final scene between Ruth and Clara, I would have liked to have seen a bit more closeness between the two, due to the changes to their relationship.

Overall, a cute, fun and funny (Catholic) family comedy.

HRTC Opens 2014-2015 Season with a MIRACLE ON SOUTH DIVISION STREET

THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE COMPANY OPENS
ITS 2014-2015 EICHELBERGER LOFT SEASON
WITH A MIRACLE ON SOUTH DIVISION STREET
Tom Dudzick’s family comedy kicks off the 28th season September 4 – 21, 2014

HRTC_Miracle on South Division Street_logo(Dayton, OH) — Fans of The Human Race’s 2008 production of Tom Dudzick’s national hit Over the Tavern will rejoice at the regional premiere of the playwright’s “rollicking” Miracle on South Division Street, directed by Human Race Resident Artist Richard E. Hess (Race, Red, Doubt). 60 years ago, Grandpa Nowak had a vision of the Virgin Mary in his Buffalo, New York barbershop and had an unusual statue of her made to commemorate the miracle. For decades, his family has faithfully tended to his quirky shrine—a source of hope and inspiration in an otherwise run-down part of town. That is until a deathbed confession knocks them for a loop in this hilarious hit comedy that proves when it comes to local legends, there’s more than meets the eye. The preview performance of Miracle on South Division Street is Thursday, September 4. Opening night is Friday, September 5.

Dudzick calls the play a work of “pure fiction, based on a ‘true’ local legend” as he created the Nowak family to explain the unknown origins of an actual 20-foot-tall brick shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Buffalo built many decades ago by a now-deceased local barber. And while the neighborhood around the shrine has fallen into disrepair, a promise from City Hall has spared the shrine from destruction as it is maintained by local residents.

CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM
Director Hess, a native of Buffalo raised in a large Catholic family, firmly identifies with the blue-collar Nowaks and their devotion to their faith and history. For his four-member Nowak family, he has cast Wendy Barrie-Wilson (All My Sons and Our Town on Broadway) as mother “Clara,” Human Race Resident Artist Jennifer Joplin (Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage) as older daughter “Beverly,” Kyle Nunn (King Lear and The Three Musketeers at Hudson Valley
Shakespeare) as son “Jimmy” and Lauren Ashley Carter (Lewis Black’s One Slight Hitch, film Jug Face) as younger daughter “Ruth.” Barrie-Wilson joins Joplin on The Loft Stage for a second time, having costarred in Hess’s 2009 production of Doubt, a Parable. Miracle on South Division Street marks the first appearance with The Human Race for Nunn and Carter, both graduates of University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where Hess was their
professor.

The scenic designer is Human Race Head Carpenter and Charge Artist Eric Moore (Footloose and The Music Man at the Springfield Summer Arts Festival), making his Loft Stage design debut, the costume designer is Kathie Brookfield (Suessical, Jr. and Annie, Jr. at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati) also with her first design for The Human Race, Resident Artist John Rensel (Play It by Heart, Fiddler on the Roof) is the lighting designer and Brian Retterer (Play It by Heart, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play) is the sound designer. Kay Carver is the production stage manager. Human Race Executive Producer Tara Lail is the show’s producer.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The production sponsors for Miracle on South Division Street are Marion’s Piazza and John and Tamara Clough.
