Human Race Gives A Lesson in Self-Discovery with Midwest Premiere of TAKING SHAKESPEARE

THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE COMPANY GIVES A LESSON IN SELF-DISCOVERY WITH MIDWEST PREMIERE OF TAKING SHAKESPEARE

(Dayton, OH) — The Human Race continues its 28th season as Dayton’s leading professional theatre with the Midwest premiere of Canadian playwright John Murrell’s lesson in self-discovery, TAKING SHAKESPEARE. When a longtime, disillusioned college professor is asked to tutor her dean’s son through his freshman Shakespeare class, she finds it to be as much a test for her as it is for him. Although they seem to have nothing in common, as they explore the Bard’s Othello together, they learn more about each other—and themselves—than either is ready to admit. While they draw strength from the play, they come to understand what it means to live up to expectations. The production runs April 16 – May 3, 2015 at The Loft Theatre. It is directed by frequent Human Race actor/director Aaron Vega, who helmed The Race’s Twelfth Night in 2011.

TAKING SHAKESPEARE’s placement on the 2015–2016 season sprang from a challenge The Race has faced for years – cast sizes. “Aaron and I  had been talking about doing another Shakespeare production, specifically a modern-day Othello. But they tend to be such large casts. The Bard never wrote a ‘two-hander,’” says Producing Artistic Director Kevin Moore. Then a surprising alternative appeared. “A member of our artistic committee, local attorney and musician David Greer, saw a production of TAKING SHAKESPEARE at Canada’s Stratford Festival in 2013 and raved to me about it. I started following up right away. Since the play’s two characters use Othello as a life-learning experience, the intersection of Othello ideas—ours and the script’s—seemed to come together perfectly.”

Last fall, The Human Race commissioned Vega to develop and direct a TAKING SHAKESPEARE companion piece for its Muse Machine In-School Tour. The result was #othello, a 40-minute contemporary adaptation of  Shakespeare’s original, focusing on cyber-bullying and its negative effects, presented to student audiences in the Miami Valley area middle and high schools. “Now,” says Moore, “Aaron’s directing a piece that uses the same Shakespeare play as a platform for two solitary individuals to connect and grow. Sometimes, magic just happens!”

TAKING SHAKESPEARE features New York-based actress Johanna Leister as “Prof” and Cincinnati actor Jon Kovach as “Murph.” Leister is a long-time New York actress has appeared on Broadway in Whose Life Is It Anyway? with Mary Tyler Moore and Tartuffe, Dracula and Whodunnit, as well as at a number of regional theatres. For four years, she starred on The Edge of Night as “Phoebe Smith.” She currently serves on the faculty of the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York where she participates in readings and performances of new plays. A West Chester, Ohio, native, Kovach last appeared on The Loft Stage in The Human Race’s 2012 production of Band Geeks! Since graduating from Miami University, he founded Cincinnati’s Unity Productions, helped build Untethered Theatre Company and became an associate artist at The Know Theatre.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of TAKING SHAKESPEARE is sponsored by Rob and Leesa Comparin; Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc.; IUE-CWA; Jack and Maryann Bernstein and Muse Machine; with additional support from Jon and Diana Sebaly and Dave and Dulie Greer.

2015-2016 Season Announced by Human Race Theatre Company

INTRODUCING THE HUMAN RACE’S 2015-2016 SEASON!\

HRTCWe’re proud to announce the lineup for our 29th season as Dayton’s premier professional regional theatre company. It’s a collection of great works with titles and authors you know but have yet to experience on the professional stage. And as ever, we will make you laugh, make you think and inspire you with the power and presence that comes with a live performance in the intimate Loft Theatre. This season, we’re delighted to also present one of the hottest comedians of our time and to join with some of our fellow Dayton performing arts organizations to bring you two incredible additional productions at the Schuster Center.

The 2015-2016 Eichelberger Loft Series Lineup:

THE FULL MONTY: THE BORADWAY MUSICAL
book by Terrence McNally
music and lyrics by David Yazbek
based on the motion picture released by Fox Searchlight Pictures and written by Simon Beaufoy,
produced by Uberto Pasolini and directed by Peter Cattaneo
September 10 – October 4, 2015

In need of quick cash and low on prospects, six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers come up with the outrageous idea to put on a strip act after seeing the local women’s wild enthusiasm for touring Chippendales dancers. Short on time and with little talent or physical appeal, the gang promises their show will be better because they’ll go “the full monty” and bare it all! As they prepare for the big night, they learn to let go of their doubts and insecurities—and their clothes—in this hilarious adaptation of the hit film.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS
by Robert Harling
November 5 – 29, 2015

The sassy hit of our 1988-1989 season finally returns!
Many things beside hair get done at Truvy’s hair salon, and that’s why it is the place to go in Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Gossip, revelations and witty Southern banter flow like refreshing sweet tea on a hot summer day. The opinionated Truvy and her new assistant, Annelle, play host to unlikely friends Ouiser and Clairee, the respectable and sociable M’Lynn and her beautiful daughter, Shelby. As the women come face to face with difficult times, they are brought together through strength and love.

THE GLASS MENAGERIE
by Tennessee Williams
February 4 – 21, 2016

Memories as fragile as glass are tossed into the air in Tennessee Williams’ first great masterpiece. Dreams meet reality and love becomes desperate in a shimmering drama of a family on the edge. Tom struggles in a modern day world while his mother holds tight to a fantasy of Southern gentility and his sister hides amongst the glistening crystalline creatures she collects. With an edge as sharp as broken glass, it’s a story that cuts deep into the longing of human hearts.

ONE SLIGHT HITCH
by Lewis Black
April 7 – 24, 2016

Life in suburban Cincinnati is good for Doc and Delia Coleman on the morning they’re about to throw their eldest daughter the perfect wedding they never had, that is until her vagabond ex-boyfriend arrives on their doorstep and wreaks havoc on all of their best laid plans. The result is a zany, door-slamming comedy about stressed-out parents, less-than-helpful siblings and interruptions galore from the mind of comedian Lewis Black. Will their daughter make it down the aisle or will the day end up a perfect disaster?

MASTER CLASS
by Terrence McNally
June 9 – 26, 2016

One of the opera world’s greatest legends takes center stage as Maria Callas gives three aspiring singers a rough welcome into the world of performing. During a series of master classes, this controversial personality now in the twilight of her career remains fearless as she looks back upon her life—the triumphs and heartbreaks, the egos and ambitions, the glories and the scandals. This Tony Award-winning drama gives a revealing look at a commanding diva and the sacrifice for art.
