Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati
May 27-June 18
[Over-the-Rhine]

Directed by Bridget Leak

Cast: Rayn Wesley Gilreath as Jack Key & Maggie Lou Rader as Elizabeth “Lizzy” Nash

Good fences make good neighbors, right? But what about clotheslines? When the unflappable Jack Key moves in next door to the endearingly neurotic Lizzy Nash, sparks fly. Over time, neighborly nagging softens, and a deeper connection emerges between the two high school teachers. As the leaves turn yellow and the months march on, kept secrets shake loose, and the pair finds themselves facing the same question: How do you know when you’re ready to live, and love, again? This poignant regional premiere dramedy tells a witty, romantic, and honest story of connection. This production contains mature language and content, including descriptions of sexual situations, loss, and alcohol use.

ETC Presents World Premiere Dramedy WHO ALL OVER THERE?, April 11-30

ETC_Who All Over ThereA fresh remix on a celebrated favorite.
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati presents World premiere Dramedy
Who All Over There?, April 11 – 30, 2023

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is excited to present the commissioned world premiere dramedy Who All Over There? by Torie Wiggins. Things aren’t always black and white—especially when it comes to relationships. Penned by the one of Cincinnati’s favorite multi-hyphenate artists, this new play is inspired by the classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and shines a light on what happens when cultures clash in the name of love. April 11–30, 2023. Directed by Stori Ayers. Premiere Sponsor is Fifth Third Bank.

When Dean, a young professional, and Danya, an aspiring singer, go on a refreshingly candid first date, they keep it real about the dynamics of a potential interracial relationship. As they grow comfortable nestled in the cocoon of their budding love, the real world brings a whirlwind of inflammatory race relations, opinionated family and friends, and troublesome pasts. Can love truly be colorblind?

“The idea came a long time ago to commission an idea from Torie Wiggins,” says Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “We bought her play on faith and without a draft, really. That’s what you have to do to give somebody a chance. What’s essential about theatre is the opportunity to have different perspectives and points of view that we could never have in our own experience, and Torie has given us an opportunity with this piece to be a fly on the wall in someone else’s world.”

ETC Hosts Fifth Annual PLAY/WRITE: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition

ETC_logo

ENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI HOSTS FIFTH ANNUAL
PLAY/WRITE: THE JACKIE DEMALINE REGIONAL COLLEGIATE PLAYWRITING COMPETITION
SUBMISSION DEADLINE OF MARCH 31, 2023

(Cincinnati, OH) Tristate area playwrights, it’s your time to shine! Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati hosts the fifth annual PLAY/write: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition, held in memory of writer, critic, and arts advocate, Jackie Demaline. Students currently enrolled full- or part-time at a university or college in the Cincinnati tristate region are encouraged to submit their plays to the competition. Dependent upon submissions, up to three winners will be chosen. Each winner will receive $2,500 from the Jackie Demaline Fund and a professionally staged reading of their script.

Demaline’s love of the arts started at a young age. Throughout her life, she continued to be a passionate believer in the arts as an entertainment writer and editor for multiple newspapers and publications. After moving to Cincinnati in 1994, she covered theatre and the arts for The Cincinnati Enquirer for 20 years and worked as an important catalyst for change and growth during a time when new theatres and companies were popping up all over Cincinnati, helping to secure their place in the community.

After a four-year battle with cancer, Demaline passed away on June 17, 2018. As her final gift to the community, she arranged for her estate to fund the PLAY/write competition. Through this, her legacy lives on—providing new voice development, kick-starting arts careers, and caring for the community through thoughtful programming.

Submission guidelines:

WHO:

  • Students currently enrolled at a university or college in the Cincinnati tristate region

WHAT:

  • Original, unpublished full-length plays (minimum of 50 pages) written in English. Translations, musicals, adaptations, and children’s plays not accepted
  • Plays must be typed and page-numbered
  • Subject matter is open; however, the play should address some of the characteristics Jackie considered when critiquing theatre:
    • Does it tell me something I didn’t know about myself or the world in which I live?
    • Does it hold up a mirror at an angle I’ve never tried so that the things I know now suddenly possess new meaning?
    • Does it move me? Excite me? Provoke me?
    • Does it make me laugh or cry? Make me uncomfortable? Make me think?

WHEN:

  • Submission deadline: 11:59 pm EST, March 31, 2023.

HOW:

  • Submit your script electronically at ensemblecincinnati.org/playwriting-competition
  • If you have questions about the competition or submission process, please email Jared D. Doren, Programming & Events Manager, at jdoren@ensemblecincinnati.org

ETC Presents Regional Premiere Drama MORNING SUN

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents Regional Premiere Drama
ETC_Morning SunMorning Sun, February 25 – March 19, 2023

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is thrilled to present the regional premiere drama Morning Sun. Deeply felt and gorgeously imagined by Tony winner Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), experience the first regional premiere production of this new play following its successful New York debut. This gutsy portrait of unsung woman plays February 25–March 19, 2023. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers.

In a brief flash, Charley’s life is sketched out before her, from the moment she was born through now, fifty years later. Her family, her friends, people she only met once, every moment she’s ever remembered crash through in full vibrancy. In this bold story transcending time and space, three generations of women embark on a journey to embrace life before it’s too late.

“I was looking for something that celebrated the uniqueness of one life,” says Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “Simon Stephens’s script absolutely caught me. It’s like being invited inside someone’s mind, soul, and heart. I couldn’t walk away from this play because it insisted to be done. I want audiences to realize they are essential to this world, that the person next to you has a story.”
