THE REALISTIC JONESES
Clifton Performance Theatre
Jan. 21-Feb. 6
Clifton

Directed by Dale Hodges

Cast: Carter Bratton, Mindy Siebert, Miranda McGee & Phil Fiorini

Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses is a show that is droll, dry and otherworldly, and, at the same time, all too human. Bob and Jennifer are spending their days managing an illness that’s manifesting itself in more and more insideous ways when Pony and John move in down the street. The couples connect in ways that are both healing and damaging, and the four of them have more in common than any of them first realized.

Keeping up with THE REALISTIC JONESES at Clifton Performance Theatre

CPT_The Realistic Joneses logoTake an award winning veteran stage actress like Dale Hodges, have her direct a play by Pulitzer Prize Winning writer Will Eno and showcase it in one of Cincinnati’s most intimate theatre’s and you have the makings of a top theatrical treat of the season. The award winning Hodges takes a turn in the directors chair with THE REALISTIC JONESES at the Clifton Performance Theatre. Hodges was last seen at CPT in the pivotal role of family matriarch Violet in August: Osage County.

THE REALISTIC JONESES is a voyzeaurs “up close and personal” view of the family next door and their relationships. Two couples both named Jones, get to know on another amid fear, loneliness, all wrapped inside unspoken love. A peak into one small town, and, perhaps everyone’s reality. Part comedy, part drama, this four character play reveals the secrets one only whispers.

The play opens with the meeting of the Jonses. Veteran CPT actor Carter Bratton is joined by Mindy Siebert, Miranda McGee and Phil Fiorini for this exchange of secrets, lies, laughs, and sometimes tragic truths. Cincinnati born Florin cut his acting chops on the Chicago stage and made his Cincinnati acting debut in 2007, when he played Pumbaa the warthog in the national tour of “The Lion King” at the Aronoff.

CPT continues to bring in the best local actors, equity and non-equity.The play opens January 21 and runs through February 7. The Clifton Performance Theatre is located in the Clifton Gaslight District at 404 Ludlow Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45220. Dan and Louise are keeping their office fling on the downlow. They’re not sure how serious they are and, well, their coworkers are total weirdos. This becomes even more clear when they discover that everyone in the office reads fan-fiction about their theoretical relationship. Disturbed by this revelation, Dan and Louise find themselves in a war between the two competing storylines: a 50 Shades-esque smutfest, and a syrupy romance. The show rounds itself out with hilarious and high quality fan-fiction videos.

After a shadowy Figure smashes his windshield, Tommy meets Rod, a mysterious and odd leader of a group of social misfits who all claim to have witnessed the superhuman being. Tommy tells the cult of his own encounter and how, at his girlfriend’s office party, he came to believe he knows the Figure’s identity. Rod claims to want to help Tommy get control over his life, but his real motives are far more disturbing.

HITCHHIKERS MAY BE INMATES Review

HITCHHIKERS MAY BE INMATES presented by Clifton Performance Theatre as part of the 2015 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

You can read the show description here.

Again this year, while Clifton Performance Theatre’s entry may not be the fringe-iest show in the festival, it certainly offers some of the best performances in the festival.

Local professional actors Michael Bath and Kevin Crowley are excellent in this three-scene one act. Both characters are on the tightrope of sobriety. As new AA-member and emotionally-fragile Dave, Bath gives a great nerd-to-jock quality to his relationship with J.D.

Crowley is great to watch in the role of J.D. There is this constant intensity coming from the character. I enjoyed how you were never really sure if J.D. was working to steady Dave on that tightrope or push him off of it.  His transformation of J.D. for the final scene is mesmerizing to watch. Kudos also have to go out to Evan Verrilli as the line-less Waiter. Your body language and facial expressions were so much fun.

For a show that is mainly two guys at a table talking, director Buz Davis keeps the energy high and the blocking dynamic. He makes the well-written script by Crowley, shine.

Definitely a favorite of this year’s festival. Seeing these two on stage together for $15 is a steal. Three performances remain through June 6.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below
