THE SECRET GARDEN presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Oct. 3. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

In a word, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s THE SECRET GARDEN is stunning. The synergy of the various facets of this production creates a magical night of theater.

Giant, handwritten pages, hanging and stacked on the floor serve as the play area. I enjoyed the simplicity of the design by Nareelle Sissons. Hidden elements and pieces managed by the cast add to the surreal quality. I also enjoyed how any use of color popped off the stage. The lighting design by Matthew Richards smartly helps define location and mood. The costume design by Leon Wiebers easily evokes the period and I enjoyed the bold color choices.

Performances are strong across the entire cast. Caitlin Cohn is incredibly believable as 10-year old Mary Lennox. Kevin Earley’s emotionally-damaged Archibald Craven (Mary’s uncle) is mesmerizing. Gayton Scott is charismatic and fun as Martha, chambermaid and confidant to Mary.

Music director Sariva Goetz fills the theater with the rich score and vocally the numbers soar. “Lily’s Eyes” sung powerfully by Archibald and Neville (Adam Monley) nearly stopped the show opening night. The staging of “Come Spirit, Come Charm” was very powerful and effective. Brandi Burkhardt sings beautifully as Lily. Her duets, “Come to My Garden” with Collin (Anthony Frederickson) and “How Can I Ever Know” were personal favorites.

Director/choreographer Marcia Milgrom Dodge evokes performances that are so emotionally true, the audience cannot help but be swept up in the story. The staging was imaginative and focused.

The one element that seems out of place, to me, is the use of the giant puppets very early in the production. It was unclear to me what they were supposed to represent. Additionally, since the show is so simply staged, the puppets seemed overly complicated and out of place.

Haunting and ethereal, visually strong with emotional and heartfelt performances, Playhouse’s THE SECRET GARDEN is an enthralling experience.

My rating: 5 out of 5.

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s 2015-16 Off the Hill Series Takes Flight with HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN

PIP_High School Alien logo(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s popular Off the Hill series for families launches its 2015-16 season with the world premiere of Allyson Currin’s HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN, which was commissioned by the Playhouse in 2013. Recommended for ages 7 and up, HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN will tour to Tristate community venues from Sept. 26 through Oct. 30.

New to the Off the Hill schedule this season, each production will debut “on the hill” at the Playhouse; HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN will be presented at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, with tickets priced at $5 and available through the Playhouse Box Office.

HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN spins the typical high school pecking order categories into a new orbit when an alien from outer space enrolls at Maddie’s high school. An eager freshman, Maddie hopes to reinvent her image to fit in with the popular crowd, but that goal is compromised as she gets to know Renata, the outlier alien student who creates quite a stir.

“I am thrilled to be directing HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN because it is so relatable for everyone,” said Bridget Leak, a former Playhouse directing intern who also directed last season’s touring production of Theory of Mind. “We all want to be liked and to find a group of people that you connect with, we all want to fit in, whether it’s middle school or middle age. Maddie looks forward to starting over as she transitions into her first year of high school — shedding her younger self and trying on a new personality to fit in with the cool group. We all have that one person we want to impress, have moments where we have tried too hard and have to adapt to change. High school is difficult for everyone and you see that through the eyes of Maddie and the alien — both feel out of place and everything feels foreign to them.”

The HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN cast includes Serena Ryen as Maddie, Kyle Powell as Charlie, Erin Ward as Robyn, Lilian Wouters as Renata and Law Dunford as Rex, all members of the Playhouse’s 2015-16 Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company. Other production team members include set designer Veronica R. Pullins-Bishop, costume designer Melanie Mortimore, sound designer Trey Tatum and stage manager Tracy Hoida.

In addition to HIGH SCHOOL ALIEN, the 2015-16 Off the Hill season features ANTIGONE by John Yearley, an inventive, accessible world premiere based on the timeless Greek legend that explores the choice Antigone must make between the laws of men and loyalty to her family (performances Jan. 23-Feb. 21, 2016, recommended for ages 11 and up). The season closes with THE GARDEN OF RIKKI TIKKI TAVI, a fun, free-flowing adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved classic about sharing and cooperation by Y York (performances April 16-May 22, 2016; recommended for ages 5 and up).

Witty, Provocative SEX WITH STRANGERS Opens Playhouse in the Park’s Shelterhouse Season, Sept. 26-Oct. 25

WITTY, PROVOCATIVE SEX WITH STRANGERS OPENS
CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S THOMPSON SHELTERHOUSE SEASON,
SEPT. 26 – OCT. 25, 2015

PIP_Sex with Strangers promo(CINCINNATI) – Laura Eason’s sexy, funny grown-up fling SEX WITH STRANGERS heats up the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s 2015-16 season with both sexual and intellectual tensions. The provocative new play runs Sept. 26 through Oct. 25 on the Playhouse’s intimate Thompson Shelterhouse stage.

SEX WITH STRANGERS is an enticing exploration of identity and intimacy in the digital age. Little-known novelist Olivia and hyper-famous blogger Ethan could not be on farther ends of the literary spectrum. Ethan’s scandalous blog-turned-book, titled Sex with Strangers, has graced The New York Times bestseller list for three years and has a high-profile movie adaptation in the works. The blog — based on a dare to pick up women in bars in order to have one-time, casual sexual encounters — has created a persona for Ethan that he would now prefer to leave behind. In spite of his early success (he is only 27), Ethan aspires to write with the literary merit of novelists like Olivia. Her first novel, praised by her peers, never received the public attention it deserved. Now a teacher and self-proclaimed “hobbyist” author at 39, she meets Ethan when they become snowbound at a cozy bed-and-breakfast in Michigan, and their mutual passion for words sparks a heated passion for each other. As they become entwined in each other’s careers, their literary and generational differences begin to clash, and complications emerge that test their relationship.

“Ethan is cocky and confident, yet able to be vulnerable and allow himself to get hurt,” says Playhouse Associate Artist and SEX WITH STRANGERS director KJ Sanchez (Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, Venus in Fur, Seven Spots on the Sun). “Olivia loves books and, although she is more reserved than Ethan, she is not prudish. She is as confident as he is, just choosing to live her life in a very different way.

“They are fully realized, multi-dimensional characters that are always surprising us. Just when we think we know who’s in control and who has the power, Laura Eason reveals other aspects to these people that surprise us all.”

Eason, who garnered acclaim writing for Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning drama House of Cards, is no stranger to writing strong characters. “The spark of the play actually came from an interest in exploring the exchange that takes place in any intimate relationship,” she told The Brooklyn Rail last year. “I heightened the situation by having both of them be writers of ambition who each want something from the other, personally and professionally.”

The SEX WITH STRANGERS cast features Nancy Lemenager (Broadway’s Chicago, Movin’ Out, Never Gonna Dance, Kiss Me Kate, Dream, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Guys and Dolls), making her Playhouse debut as Olivia, and Nicholas Carrière, who appeared in the Playhouse’s world premiere of Abigail/1702, as Ethan. The creative team, in addition to Sanchez, includes set and costume designer Misha Kachman, lighting designer Brian J. Lilienthal and sound designer Matthew M. Nielson. Andrea L. Shell is the stage manager.

SEX WITH STRANGERS is sponsored by Schueler Group.

Ticket prices for SEX WITH STRANGERS start at $35. Prices are subject to change, and patrons are encouraged to buy early for the best seats at the best prices. The show is appropriate for adult and older teenage audiences.

Returning this season is the popular Sunday College Night, with tickets to all 7 p.m. Sunday performances (not including A Christmas Carol) priced at just $10 with a valid student ID. Student tickets are just $15 on the day of the show for all other performances.

Discounted ticket prices for teens and students are available in advance for all productions for $30 and $45, depending on seat location.

THE SECRET GARDEN Opens Playhouse in the Park’s 2015-2016 Season, Sept. 5-Oct. 3

THE SECRET GARDEN OPENS CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S 2015-16 SEASON, SEPT. 5 – OCT. 3, 2015

PIP_The Secret Garden promo(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park opens its 2015-16 season with the heartwarming, soaring musical THE SECRET GARDEN, based on the enduring family classic penned more than a century ago by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Winner of three Tony Awards on Broadway, with book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon, THE SECRET GARDEN runs Sept. 5-Oct. 3 in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre.

When 10-year-old Mary Lennox loses her parents to a devastating cholera outbreak in India, she is sent 6,000 miles away to live with her inattentive uncle at his foreboding English manor. Like Mary, Archibald Craven knows suffering, having never recovered from the death of his wife, Mary’s Aunt Lily, a decade earlier.

Selfish and spoiled, left mostly on her own, Mary has a difficult time adjusting to the peculiarities of her new home, where it seems as though the spirits of those who’ve come before her are always just out of sight. That is until she is befriended by the plucky housemaid Martha and her brother Dickon, who introduces Mary to the wonders of nature all around her. When Mary discovers the locked-away secrets of an abandoned garden, she coaxes far more than its flowers back to life.

“THE SECRET GARDEN is one of my favorite musicals,” said Playhouse Artistic Director Blake Robison. “It’s emotionally rich, musically lush and the book is fantastic. So many stories with child protagonists are cutesy and saccharine. Not so in THE SECRET GARDEN. Mary’s journey is complex. She navigates a very adult world of loneliness and isolation, only to restore love and light to herself and those around her.

“THE SECRET GARDEN is a beloved literary classic,” Robison continued. “The musical brings it to life in a uniquely human way.”

“Frances Hodgson Burnett’s timeless story, Lucy Simon’s richly beautiful music and Marsha Norman’s Tony Award-winning book all combine to make THE SECRET GARDEN a piece of great musical theatre,” said Marcia Milgrom Dodge, the Tony Award-nominated director and choreographer who will helm the production (she previously directed Cabaret at the Playhouse). “I love how the characters convey their innermost feelings and fears though the haunting melodies of Lucy Simon’s music combined with the delicate dialogue and highly charged lyrics of Marsha Norman.”

THE SECRET GARDEN is sponsored by The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation. Barbara and Bill Weyand are the show’s orchestra sponsors, and Rosemary and Mark Schlachter are the artist sponsors for Mary Lennox. The production honors the support of The Lemmerman Family.

The cast of THE SECRET GARDEN features Cameron Bartell (Dickon), Dan Beckmann (Captain Albert Lennox/Ensemble), Brandi Burkhardt (Lily), Caitlin Cohn (Mary Lennox), Carlyn Connolly (Claire Holmes/Ensemble), Kevin Earley (Archibald Craven), Anthony Frederickson (Colin Craven), Charlotte Maltby (Martha), Timothy McDevitt (Lieutenant Peter Wright/Ensemble), Adam Monley (Dr. Neville Craven), Gayton Scott (Mrs. Medlock), Vishal Vaidya (Fakir/Ensemble), Jessica Van Kipp (Rose Lennox), Anita Vasan (Ayah/Ensemble), Dathan B. Williams (Ben Weatherstaff), Michael Yeshion (Major Holmes/Ensemble) and Talia Noelle Zoll (Alice/Ensemble).

In addition to Dodge, the creative team features Sariva Goetz (music director/orchestral arranger), Michael Sebastian (associate music director/conductor), Narelle Sissons (set designer), Leon Wiebers (costume designer), Matthew Richards (lighting designer), David Bullard (sound designer) and Puppet Kitchen Productions Inc. (puppet designer/construction). Jenifer Morrow is the production stage manager, and Brooke Redler is second stage manager.
