I’ll tell you something: in the last couple of years, Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage has quickly become one of my favourite playwrights. So when I got wind that her latest play, Clyde’s, would be going up at Moe and Jack’s Place (The Rouse Theatre) at Playhouse in the Park, needless to say I was enthusiastic.

Clyde’s, directed by Timothy Douglas, tells the story of a truck-stop known for its sandwiches. Not-so-publicly known is that the kitchen crew are ex-cons who eagerly take the bait of a real job when finding such a thing after prison can be incredibly difficult. But owner and fellow ex-con Clyde’s manner can be enough to make them regret jumping at the chance at a so-called “honest living”.

Set Designer Se Hyun Oh deserve a standing “Oh” (oof, even I cringed at that one) for his incredible work. Word on the street is that Mr. Oh consulted with a professional chef for the kitchen model and it shows. The layout as well as the attention to detail throughout are absolutely brilliant. Plus I’m a sucker for a set that contains a sink with running water.

Casting Director Stephanie Klapper has put together one of the most harmonious ensembles of actors I’ve ever seen. Strong, committed, and talented, they all deserve a mention by name (in speaking order): Michael Cornelius Chenevert, Jr. as Montrellous; Maiesha McQueen as Clyde; Shannon Dorsey as Letitia; Juan Arturo as Rafael; and Austin Kirk as Jason. These accomplished artists will make you feel like you are the proverbial “fly on the wall” witnessing all the happenings in this gritty and all too real tale.

While I am a big fan of the way Ms. Nottage incorporates music into her scene changes, the number of changes in this particular script seems to be excessive.

Some are rather lengthy for very little payoff. But as I often say, if we get that nit-picky, they are doing something right. There is another plot point that seemed inconsistent regarding the character Rafael, but since I don’t do spoilers, I won’t get into it here. Ask me when you see me and we can chat about it.

In short, this allegory of people just trying to survive their mistakes without becoming them is an enjoyable time at the theatre*. Running approximately 95 mins with no intermission, be sure you eat directly before or directly after Clyde’s because you are definitely going to need a sandwich.

LATE NITE CATECHISM
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Nov. 4-Dec. 23
Shelterhouse Theatre [Eden Park]

One of the longest running shows in Chicago and U.S. theatre history, this one-nun comedy is part catechism class, part stand-up routine. A playful and compassionate send-up of Catholic culture, the audience becomes Sister’s class in this uproarious piece of interactive theatre. Sister is filling in for Father Murphy, who doesn’t want to miss his poker night, and she’s going to teach the class the way she wants. She goes on to weave stories into a hilarious tapestry that laughs at the quirks of the church while simultaneously embracing them. The Hollywood Reporter said it’s “a laugh-filled evening for all cultures, classes and religions.” Appropriate for audiences 12 and up and contains no strong language.

CLYDE’S Runs Oct. 14-Nov. 5

PIP_ClydesCLYDE’S
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Oct. 14-Nov. 5
Rouse Theater [Eden Park]

Directed by Timothy Douglas

Every sandwich has a story at Clyde’s, a truck-stop operated by a group of people recently released from prison. Under the no-nonsense authority of Clyde — an ex-con herself whose searing remarks can really leave a burn — the small kitchen crew finds redemption and purpose through the art of sandwich-making. These vividly drawn characters share their stories and learn to express themselves creatively as they attempt to reclaim their lives in a world that’s set up for them to fail. Can an artistic twist on a grilled cheese elicit feelings of hope? Can assembling the perfect sandwich awaken a spiritual experience? In this witty and inspiring dramedy from two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage, they absolutely can. Clyde’s is suitable for older teenage and adult audiences only. A crew of people recently released from prison find purpose in sandwich making while using very strong adult language and discussing mature topics, including sex, substance abuse and illegal activities.

CLYDE’S, A Dramedy From Pulitzer-Winning Lynn Nottage Explores Community, Connection and Redemption at the Cincinnati Playhouse Beginning Oct. 14

PIP_ClydesCINCINNATI (SEPT. 21, 2023) – With vivid characters, witty dialogue and inspiring stories of redemption, CLYDE’S, the latest play by noted playwright and Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage, begins Oct. 14 at Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre. The production, directed by Timothy Douglas, runs through Nov. 5 with opening night on Oct. 19. CLYDE’S is presented by Moe and Jack Rouse and Randolph Wadsworth.

At the truck stop diner CLYDE’S, which is owned by a formerly incarcerated individual of the same name, every sandwich has a story and the kitchen crew has plenty to tell. Though the world seems set up for them to fail, they recapture their imaginations and reclaim their lives as sandwich artists in this witty dramedy.

Director Timothy Douglas says of Nottage’s storytelling, “This visionary playwright expertly crafts epic tales for the stage that are accessible to contemporary audiences, in which they can ‘see’ themselves. In addition, no matter to what heights or depths her creative vision takes us, the journey remains fully rooted in authentic truth and learning.”
CLYDE’S was the most produced play of the 2022-2023 American playgoing season, inviting conversations about America’s prison system and the downstream effects on families and communities.

In an interview with the Art for Justice Fund, Nottage discussed her personal connections to the story: “My father worked in corrections in the 1960s and ‘70s, and my brother is a D.A. I have family members who spent the majority of life incarcerated. And so my life in some ways revolves around this system that has really been designed to punish Black men.”
Nottage is a celebrated writer known for holding a mirror to society and creating plays that are accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences. Two previous plays, Ruined and Sweat, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

“What increasingly resonates with me from the in-depth discussions I’ve had with Lynn Nottage over the years is her fervent commitment to exposing the beating hearts and radiating souls of her characters,” Douglas says. “Each one of them goes through very human and often harrowing experiences, yet all emerge with their authentic resiliencies intact.”

How far would you go to help a friend, and what would you be willing to risk? Through years of late-night conversations, they see each other through adolescence and fight to find their place in the world.
