“I have always spoken of my time in the local Cincy theatre scene as my most developmental – many of those groups gave me the chance at a VERY young age to do work that, while perhaps not for a salary, was worth a gold mine in experience and freedom. There’s no question that things like the ACT scholarship helped me make it through CCM and on to other paths of success.”

— Richard Oberacker, ACE composer
and two-time ACT Scholarship Winner

Performance students will have a maximum of five minutes to present two contrasting pieces (monologues, songs, dances). An accompanist will be provided.

On Cue for December

The electronic newsletter of the Association of Community Theatres of Greater Cincinnati

December 2013, Linda Roll, Editor

ACT_purpleThis production season has been a busy one so far and looks to get busier in 2014. Your ACT board is working hard to make sure that you are aware of all the things that are happening within the organization. We are currently in the process of recreating the website and once this is on line again, this process will be easier to accomplish. Hopefully this will happen in the first few months of 2014. It is a large undertaking and thanks go to and Gary Rogers  who is dDennis Murphy for content oing the design for the input to be done at UC Communications Services  and to Mason Community Theatre for agreeing to host the site on their domain. We are all looking forward to that day.

Last year, ACT conducted a raffle in order to raise funds for the organization. This is going to happen again this year. There are some details that are yet to be worked out, but by January each group should have these tickets in their hands. There will be a deadline this year for returning the money or unsold tickets. Your ACT theatre representative will have all of that information. The prize will be a $2,500 vacation or $2,500 cash ( your choice). There will be only 700 tickets sold at $10. each or 6 For $50.

There is also a big discussion as to how to get more groups to participate in the OCTA regional competition. There are a lot of ideas going around. IF you have a suggestion, please let a your rep bring it to the board for consideration. We know that sometimes it is just a matter of not being able to get the rights to do the show. SO, when you request the rights to perform your show, request the rights to excerpt it as well. (you don’t have to pay for this until you actually decide to excerpt). That way, you will know just where you are and can decide which show to excerpt.

OCTA will try something different in regards to the bienial AACT fest. Starting with the OCTA conference in 2014, all theaters excerpting will be allowed to decide if they would like to be judged for AACTFest and, depending on the number of entries, OCTA will then send the top one or two to the Region III AACTFest in Michigan in 2015. There will be more information on this as the details are worked out.

2nd VP Dee Anne Bryll has restructured who the judges are assigned shows which has been a great success. She is working hard to get new judges into system as well as helping the judges understand the need of commenting on all areas of the production She has accomplished this by creating a new form all judges are using to write their critiques. This has been a great success.

The Act Scholarship auditions have been scheduled for February 8th at Footlighters’ Stain Glass Theatre. These Scholarships are open to any student majoring is theater. Encourage those students you know to apply for these scholarships.

Taking off my editor’s hat….
As this year comes to a close, in my humble opinion, I really believe that we have the BEST group of theatres presenting amazing theatre anywhere! It is always thrilling to see what we can accomplish and what we continue to accomplish. We are indeed priviledged to live in an area where theatre is appreciated.

I hope you all have a holiday that is truly blessed, however you celebrate. And that 2014 is your best year yet!
