NKU School of the Arts Offering Online Art Summer Workshops for Adults

NKU_SOTA logoNorthern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts will be offering two online art studio workshops for adults age 18+ this summer. Each workshop is taught by Randel Plowman and will offer an optional 10-hour Professional Development certificate for teachers. Tuition for each workshop is $70.

‘Zine Workshop (June 13-19)
You will create a ‘zine edition of your own! This can include text and pictures, pictures only, text only. Both printing and binding techniques will be taught. If you are an artist, writer, teacher or anyone with a story to tell, a point to make, or like to draw and make things, this workshop is for you! No previous experience necessary.

‘Zines (pronounced “zeens,” short for magazines) are self-published mini-books or original content about anything the author/illustrator chooses. Examples of topics range from comics, fanfiction, politics, art, and personal stories. Generally, they are reproduced on a photocopier in small print runs for sale or trade. Zines have been produced since the 1700s and were created by politically involved artists in the Dada and Surrealist movements in the early 20th century and the 1970s Punk subculture.

Collage Workshop (June 27-July 3)
Collage is the art of recycling. It takes the old and makes it new again through fragmenting, recontextualizing and combining imagery in new and exciting ways. This seven-day online workshop explores the many possibilities that collage can offer. This workshop is open to both beginner and advanced artists.

Several techniques will be explored in this hands-on workshop, including; creating visually compelling imagery through the use of layering, using color effectively, how to create a strong composition and more.

About Randel Plowman
Randel Plowman received his M.F.A. in printmaking from University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.F.A. from Northern Kentucky University. He has exhibited in solo and juried exhibitions throughout the United States; in addition, his work appears in many public and private collections in North America and abroad, his work has been cited in numerous publications, including The New York Times and USA Today; been featured in The Paris Review, How Design Magazine, Artist Magazine and Somerset Studio. He is the author of two books, Masters: Collage, and The Collage Workbook: How To Get Started And Stay Inspired; voted Best Art Instruction Book of 2012 by Library Journal. Plowman currently teaches printmaking at Northern Kentucky University.

Virtual Masterclass with Broadway and TV Star, Chris Lee Hosted by ROYAL Theatre Company

RTC_logoROYAL Theatre Company is honored to host a live Virtual Masterclass featuring actor, singer, dancer, and musician, Chris Lee. You don’t want to miss this exclusive opportunity to talk with and learn from this amazing star! You’ll have a chance to learn about Chris’ journey, perform a song of your choice, and gain helpful advice from Chris on how to succeed in the entertainment business. To ensure a highly personalized experience, we are limiting the class to 15 students.

NOTE: To participate in this masterclass, you must be between 12 – 24 years old and have access to a device that can join a Zoom meeting.

RTC_Chris LeeAbout the Instructor, Chris Lee: After attending Belmont University, Chris was cast as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway smash hit Hamilton in Chicago. He is currently a series regular on CW’s new hot show, Legacies, playing the role of KALEB, a vampire. He also has a recurring role on Showtime’s The Chi and has guest-starred on many shows including Empire, S.W.A.T., Whose line is it anyway? and more!

When he is not on stage, he is writing and performing his own music. In 2018, he released his debut EP “In My Feelings.” He has since released two singles, “Adios” and “Intruder Alert,” and his debut album 1000.

Class Size: Maximum 15 students who must be between the ages of 12 – 24

Masterclass Agenda:

Chris Lee will shine a light on the world of Broadway and television by sharing his own journey from high school, to college, to Broadway and TV. He’ll share an insider’s scoop on the pros and cons of the entertainment business.

Students will have the opportunity to perform individually and receive advice and encouraging guidance from Chris. Each student should come prepared to sing a 1-minute cut of a song of their choice, however, keep in mind the song should be rated PG.

At the conclusion of the class, students will also have an open Q&A session allowing Chris to share his insights and industry tips.

Dramatist Guild of America’s Free Workshop in Dayton on March 1

OPC_logoOhio Playwrights Circle is teaming up with the Dramatist Guild of America for a FREE Playwrighting Workshop and Producer Q&A on March 1 from 4-5:50 pm on the second floor studio of The Human Race Theatre company, 126 N. Main Street in Dayton, Ohio.

REWORKING FOR THE STAGE: ADAPTATION AND REVISION
From 4-4:50pm Jeremy Llorence, Otterbein University’s playwriting professor, will share personal stories of his creative approaches in adaptation, revision, and the rehearsal process, while providing some of his tools and exercises for taking that next big creative step.

Jeremy Llorence is a Black American playwright from Metro-Detroit. His ten-minute, one act and full-length plays have been seen in venues all over the Midwest, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Milwaukee, and Chicago. As a writer, he is interested in exploring topics of masculinity and place through both comedy and drama. As a teacher, he is interested helping students find the voices to tell the stories that matter most to them.

A PRODUCER’S PERSPECTIVE
From 5-5:50 pm, join Beth Wood, Associate Artistic Director of Cleveland Public Theatre, as she answers your questions and shares her impressions and reflections on over a decade producing new work. Les Hunter, Ohio Regional Representative of the Dramatists Guild of America, will moderate this session.

Beth Wood joined the CPT staff in 2007 and is a director, actress, administrator, designer, educator, and theatre technician. As a director of adventurous scripted work, she has been honored as a director of superior achievement by the Cleveland Critics Circle in 2016, 2015, and 2013, and has directed 17 productions, including seven world premieres and eight regional premieres, during her twelve-year tenure at CPT. In addition to her directing work, Beth supports four New Play Development series that invest in outside-themainstream work and the artistic growth of Northeast Ohio creators.

Two Spring Classes at Know Theatre Now Open for Enrollment

This contemporary acting workshop taught by area theatre favorites, Jared Joplin and Miranda McGee, begins with group/ensemble work and continues into duet scene study using cutting edge contemporary scripts from The New Play Exchange.  This class provides you with a fantastic opportunity to hone your acting skills, add new tools to your acting toolbox and get a glimpse of what’s new in American Theatre! The class meets for six 2.5 hour sessions, with an invited performance for the final session on Know Theatre’s Underground cabaret stage.

We understand that schedules are tough and plans change. If you have more than two absences, you’re more than welcome to keep attending the class, but know your scene work will be reassigned.

Advanced Acting for Adults

The Advanced Acting workshop is for those that have taken our Contemporary Acting workshop or for actors wanting to take the next step in advancing their skills.  Work with methods from prominent theatre practitioners (Stanislavski, Meisner, Kaiser), explore Chakra work and analyze complex contemporary scripts and classical texts.  In addition, Miranda McGee and Jared Joplin will work with you to build an audition package that challenges you and highlights your skills… just in time for Audition Season!  The class meets for six 2.5 hour sessions, with an invited performance for the final session on Know Theatre’s Underground cabaret stage.

Storytelling Workshop at Ohio Playwrights Circle

OPC_logoGet behind the wheel of your stories with the Ohio Playwrights Circle workshop, The Driving Point.

This seminar is focused on the understanding and the use of the Driving Point in classic story telling. It is that unique point in the story which propels the story forward with an inevitable energy. We will see how it was used in Romeo and Juliet as well as the Godfather and modern adventure comedies like Back to the Future. It is an important tool to have in your writer’s skill set.

This second of three workshops is for playwrights, screen writers, fiction and short story writers. London, founder of Ohio Playwrights Circle, is an Ohio playwright and educator who has worked with the artist-in-residence program at the Ohio Arts Council since 1986. His plays have been performed in the US, UK and Canada. He has taught workshops and seminars on playwrighting over many years, is a lifetime member of the Dramatists Guild and recently a Guest Professor in Playwrighting at Otterbein University. Michael is a lifetime member of the Dramatists Guild.
