Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Announces the 2021-2022 Grand Re-Opening Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater

18 months after their mainstage went dark, Cincinnati Shakespeare is thrilled to be announcing their re-opening!

CINCINNATI (August 12, 2021) – Today, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) announced the titles for the 2021-2022 Grand Re-Opening Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater. This season features Shakespeare greats, classic comedies, fresh adaptations, American masters, and more. These productions, beginning in October 2021, will be the first on the Mainstage at CSC since the pandemic closure in March 2020. CSC’s Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips said, “While the past 18 months were not what anyone at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company originally envisioned, it is certainly one we will never forget. As we moved through it with imagination, flexibility, tenacity, and endurance, we were sustained by the hope that live theatre would eventually return. We are elated to share that news today!”

The season will begin in October with William Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET directed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin.  This production will be set in traditional Elizabethan staging and will make for a triumphant return to the Mainstage. The star-crossed lovers in “Romeo and Juliet” will be Courtney Lucien and Crystian Wiltshire.  Both actors frequently appear at CSC with Courtney last appearing in “Pride and Prejudice,” and Crystian Wiltshire appearing last in “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “All the Way.”  Crystian has also recently joined Cincinnati Shakespeare as its new Associate Artistic Director.

Alvarez will continue to delight audiences with its brand of irreverent pop culture holiday humor.  This production will have many more dates added, opening in mid-November to meet the pent up demand for this beloved holiday classic!

CSC_Ma Rainey promoIn the spring, the season continues with American master August Wilson and his play MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, with a powerhouse music filled production directed by Candice Handy, CSC’s newly appointed Director of Education.  This production will feature Torie Wiggins as Ma Rainey.

The first production to be completely halted due to the pandemic before it could even begin was the much-awaited production of William Shakespeare’s HAMLET featuring Sara Clark portraying a reverse gendered Hamlet.  “This is an important one to us and we are thrilled to present this production…finally!” said Brian. “Hamlet” will also feature a collaboration with Brave Berlin, the media creatives known for their work with BLINK and who brought their stunning light projection design to CSC’s production of “1984” in 2018.

That will be followed by the slapstick production of William Shakespeare’s THE COMEDY OF ERRORS inspired by an old Las Vegas world, featuring Geoffrey Warren Barnes II and Justin McCombs and directed by Jeremy Dubin.

And then to close the season, CSC will reprise the production that was stopped only weeks into performance last March: Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.  “This show had already become the most popular production in Cincinnati Shakespeare Company history before the Governor’s order on mass gatherings was made on March 12, 2020. We think it will be very fitting for us to close this triumphant season with the return of this much loved and very jubilant production,” said Mr. Phillips.

“As we head into what will inevitably be the most unique and innovative season in CSC history, we will keep finding ways to bring Shakespeare and the Classics to life for all, and will re-open as a better, stronger, and more inclusive organization. If the past year has taught us anything, it is that CSC is more than just a theater. CSC is a community of artists and collaborators. We believe in in the power of live performance, the resonance of spoken words, the magic of storytelling, and the profound impact an artistic experience can have on an individual,” said Mr. Phillips.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company continues to offer audiences great value with affordable, flexible subscriptions that include flexible tickets that can be used in any combination for any performance. Subscription packages start at $240.  All subscriptions and single tickets are currently on sale now and may be purchased through the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company website www.cincyshakes.com or box office by calling 513-381-BARD (2273) ext. 1.

There are also discounts available for students, seniors, local residents, and community partners as access to all is important to CSC. Each performance night has a limited number of $14 “Access” tickets in the Upper Gallery.  These can be purchased in advance by going online or calling the Box Office.  And starting 1 hour before each performance, any unreserved tickets may be available as a discounted Rush Ticket to anyone, not just students. These tickets are only $12 and could be located anywhere in the house depending on that evening’s availability. These cannot be reserved more than 1 hour before a show and must be purchased in person in the Box Office.

Tensions and temperatures rise at a Chicago music studio in 1927 when fiery, fearless blues singer Ma Rainey joins her band for a fraught recording session. She is a Black woman determined to control her art and her life on her own terms. However, as egos and generational ideologies clash, heated conflicts erupt between everyone present that wrestle with the complexities of racism and artistic exploitation in this Tony Award® nominated powerhouse of a play.

The mysterious death of a king is followed by his brother’s unconventional ascension to the throne and the Queen’s bed casts young Hamlet, usurped heir to the crown, in the role of reluctant avenger. Incest and intrigue, murder and madness, triumph and treachery all combine to paint one of the most complex and compelling portraits in all of English literature. Well, it can only be The Comedy of Errors. Shakespeare’s silliest, screwiest, and slapstickiest comedy returns to the CSC stage, this time with a Sin City twist. Inspired by golden era Las Vegas, this music filled production will be packed with cool cats, rat packs, showgirls, wise guys, and more!  So place your bets, roll the dice, and check it out, but remember- what happeneth in the theater, stayeth in the theater.

Pride and Prejudice
By Kate Hamill
Adapted from the novel by Jane Austen
May 20 – June 18, 2022
Previews May 18 & 19, 2022

One of the single most cherished stories of all time returns to the CSC stage in a fresh and funky new adaptation which critics are calling “delightfully different,” “fizzy and festive,” and “unlike any adaptation of Jane Austen one has seen before.” Sweepingly romantic, with a good dose of the tongue-in-cheek, Pride and Prejudice follows the love stories of the Bennet sisters, as they find that the path to true love can lead to the most unexpected of places.

A Viral Revival of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and a Full 2021-22 Season

CINCINNATI, OH – August 12, 2021 — The Sunset Players, a West Side community theater group, is raising its curtain Friday, August 20th with a special two-weekend revival of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES. This viral revival completes the run of this multiple award winning (24 Association of Community Theatre (ACT) awards to be exact) production, and sets the stage for a full season of productions for 2021-22, the groups 41st season.

“The Sunset Players are thrilled to resume live theater from our home at the Arts Center at Dunham,” said John Wesseling, president and long-time member of Sunset Players. “We’re bringing the band back together for a third, and final, time in August with a special run of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES. We thought that this was difficult after 20 years between the 2001 and 2020 productions. Then the pandemic hit, cast members moved many states away, and our facility has been shuttered for the better part of the past year. I was amazed at the willingness and the sacrifices of the cast members to pull this back together for a final 6 performance run.”

PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann and produced by special arrangements from Samuel French, is a high-octane trip down Highway 57 in Grand Ole Opry country with the Pump Boys at the garage and the Dinettes at the Double Cupp diner next door. Directed by Don Frimming, this fun, toe-tapping musical offers an array of country and western songs on guitars, piano, bass and kitchen utensils. This production promises a brief, yet overdue, vacation from the challenges encountered since it’s premature pandemic related closing in March 2020. Performances are August 20, 21, 22, 26, 27 and 28. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm; Sunday Matinee at 3pm and Thursday performance at 7:30pm.

The 2021-2022 season opens with:

LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR by Neil Simon. Directed by John Wesseling and produced by special arrangements from Samuel French, this play focuses on the star and writing staff of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953 and the writing, fighting and wacky antics that ensue in the writers’ room. Based upon Mr. Simon’s days writing for Sid Caesar along with Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, and Woody Allen, performances are October 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30.

The kids and those young at heart can watch ALICE IN WONDERLAND come to life as a group of performers seeks out Alice to provide “her turn” in Wonderland. As her adventure unfolds, Alice encounters many unforgettable characters. Based on the Lewis Carroll classic, this piece was dramatized by William Glennon, and is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois. Performances are December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12. Friday performances are at 7:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.

The winter season will warm up with DRINKING HABITS, a farce by Tom Smith. Directed by Dan Hawkins and produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc., two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing are secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open. When two reporters and former fiancées go undercover to investigate, accusations, mistaken identities, and romances ensue in this laugh-out-loud farce. Performances are February 18, 19, 25, 26, 27 and March 3, 4 and 5.

The season wraps with the audience lining up to see the musical TWO BY TWO with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Peter Stone. Based on the play The Flowering Peach by Clifford Odets and produced by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals, Dennis Murphy will direct this inspirational and hilarious retelling of the Biblical story of Noah. It seems that the building of the ark was only the first of Noah’s many challenges. Being chosen by God isn’t always smooth sailing. Performances are May 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 21.

Cincinnati State’s Interpreter Training Program will provide sign language interpreting for the deaf community on the second Saturday performance for the regular season.

Tickets for PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and the 2021-2022 season series are on sale now and can be purchased online at the Sunset Players website (www.sunsetplayers.org) or at the door, as permitted by pandemic restrictions for indoor performances. About the Arts Center at Dunham
We’ve been busy improving the audience experience in our facility while shuttered. Courtesy of a grant from the Hamilton County CARES Relief Program for assistance to arts and cultural organizations, the Arts Center has installed viral mitigation equipment within our HVAC systems and obtained an emist electrostatic disinfection system to clean the theater before/after each performance. The theater will also follow all local, state and federal requirements related to COVID for the health and safety of our patrons, volunteers and actors.

Sound systems have been enhanced, and an assistive listening system added to enhance the experience of our hearing impaired guests, courtesy of a generous Small Arts Organizations Award from Summerfair. Finally, The Sunset Players are a recipient of an ArtsWave Catalyzing Impact Grant which will be used to fund the 2021-22 Arts Center at Dunham FREE Family Fun Series. This is a matching grant, so attendance and support of The Sunset Players and the Arts Center at Dunham will help fully fund this opportunity for all to experience the incredible creative and performing arts that Cincinnati has to offer.

About The Sunset Players

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Announces 2021-2022 Otto M. Budig Family Foundation Season

ETC_logo(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC), the region’s premiere theatre, is delighted to reopen its doors for a five-show 2021-2022 Season, reprising its production of the 2018 Obie Award-winning play Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau. Having played a few performances to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, the show was abruptly suspended the day after it opened in March of 2020 in response to COVID-19. In addition to Pipeline, ETC will present the following productions that embrace the spirit of social consciousness for which the organization is known: Cinderella, Queen, a double bill of I Shall Not Be Moved and Your Negro Tour Guide, and Tiny Beautiful Things. Season sponsor is the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

“Diverse, inclusive, and fascinating. That’s how I would describe our 2021-2022 Season,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “It’s about triumph over trauma, which we are all experiencing in one way or another. I chose stories that really, genuinely matter and celebrate the tenacity we’ve all had to show to reopen. The most import thing for us was to reopen with Pipeline. The integrity of that show and the crucial need for that show today in our society demands itself on stage.”

About the Plays
The work of  the acclaimed MacArthur “Genius” Grant playwright Dominique Morisseau (Detroit ’67, Skeleton Crew) returns to the stage to open Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s 2021-2022 Season with the reprising of Pipeline. Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son, Omari, opportunities they’ll never have. But when an explosive incident at his prestigious private school threatens to get him expelled, will all her efforts be lost? A compelling, must-see portrait of parenthood, education, and the experience of young black men in America, Pipeline, September 22–October 16, 2021, brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the forefront. This is the deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future—without turning her back on the community that made him who he is. Sponsored by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

For the holidays, ETC revives one of its most treasured family-friendly holiday musicals, Cinderella, with book by Joseph McDonough and music and lyrics by David Kisor, December 1–30, 2021. What do you get when you combine a nearsighted bookworm heroine, two fabulously self-absorbed stepsisters, one devilishly diva stepmother, along with a self-empowering Well-Wisher? A fun spin on the classic fairy tale that demonstrates being smart is true beauty! When the King pressures his romantically challenged son to choose a bride from hundreds of “applicants,” a cross-country tour of the kingdom ensues to reunite a missing sneaker—yes a sneaker!—with its rightful owner. Cinderella is suitable for all ages. Sponsored by the Schueler Group.

Next, ETC presents the new play that’s created quite a buzz, Queen by award-winning playwright Madhuri Shekar, January 26–February 26, 2022. PhD candidates Sanam and Ariel have spent the better part of the last decade exhaustively researching vanishing bee populations across the globe. Just as these close friends are about to publish a career-defining paper, Sanam stumbles upon an error in their calculations, which could cause catastrophic damage to their reputations, careers, and friendship. Now, Sanam is confronted with an impossible choice: look the other way or stand by her principles and accept the consequences?

ETC is thrilled to present two one-act productions with the newly commissioned world premiere of I Shall Not Be Moved followed by the return of Your Negro Tour Guide, playing back-to-back March 23-April 23, 2022. The riveting play I Shall Not Be Moved is by Cincinnati native and emerging young playwright Isaiah Reaves. This one-woman show thrillingly recounts the story of Reave’s grandmother, nationally recognized Civil Rights pioneer Betty Daniels Rosemond and her beautiful, horrifying, and trailblazing journey through the American South as one of the first Freedom Riders during the 1960s. Audiences far and wide will experience the internal conflicts and joys of a dark-skinned Black woman’s fearless battle for equity and equality.

The one-woman stage adaptation of Your Negro Tour Guide, which has been updated, draws heavily from columns and National Public Radio commentaries collected in Kathy Y. Wilson’s book, Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths in Black & White based on her former CityBeat column. Throwing a glaring light on misguided notions of natural black beauty, black homophobia, intra-racial bigotry, and other cultural stereotypes, this play allows us, once and for all, to laugh at every secret we’ve held against and sideways glance we’ve cast at “The Other,” whoever she happens to be.

Based on the acclaimed book by Cheryl Strayed (author of the best-selling Wild), Tiny Beautiful Things, May 18–June 18, 2022, is a funny and deeply touching exploration of resilience following the then-struggling writer as she took over the unpaid, anonymous position of an advice columnist named Sugar. At first unsure of herself, she finds a way to weave her own life experiences together to help those seeking guidance for obstacles large and small. Brilliantly adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, the Academy Award-nominated writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this enrapturing and uplifting play surges with emotion and was described by Variety as “a theatrical hug in turbulent times.” Closing ETC’s 36th Season, Tiny Beautiful Things is about reaching out when you’re stuck, recovering when you’re broken, and finding the courage to ask the questions that are hardest to answer.

Subscriptions to the 2021-2022 Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati season are on sale now. 4-Show Preview subscriptions are $145 (excludes holiday production); Regular and FlexPass subscriptions range from $223 to $245.
