Nothing says “Christmas Time Is Here” like twinkling lights, cheery cocktails, and Yuletide carols crooned with a jazz band!

Queen City Cabaret is kicking off your holiday season in the “new old-fashioned way” this December at Cincinnati’s historic Liberty Exhibition Hall. Join us for an evening of holiday tunes you know and love, along with some light-hearted fun and a *very* special guest.

Saturday, March 18 at 7:30pm

Join Cincinnati’s own Queen City Cabaret and Cincinnati Song Initiative for an extraordinary concert of timeless songs from America’s mid-20th century.

The evening will feature performances of vintage popular music and jazz standards by QCC’s own Sarah Folsom and Matthew Umphreys and jazz vocalist Mandy Gaines.

The phrase “Great American Songbook” often describes music from the first half of the 20th century that seems to transcend the era in which it was written.  The Great American Songbook Foundation describes these songs as collection of  “enduring standards, the songs that are played and sung over and over by multiple generations….(they) have a timeless meaning and resonance, whether they are days or decades old.”

Presented at Cincinnati’s historic Liberty Exhibition Hall, this evening of songs and sentiment is expected to sell out, so reserve your tickets today!

Friday, May 5 at 7:30pm

Polish up your cowboy boots, and join Queen City Cabaret as they celebrate the songstress who changed the game for women in Country music–the one and only Patsy Cline. Before her untimely death in 1963 at the age of 30, Cline became one of the most influential singers of the 20th century, with hit recordings such as “I Fall To Pieces,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and the #1 jukebox sensation, “Crazy.” Featuring performances by the Cincinnati Boychoir, this one-night-only showcase of vintage country hits is one you won’t want to miss!

XUT_logoRabbit Hole
By David Lindsay-Abaire
September 16-18, 2022
Gallagher Student Center Theatre
Directed by Patrick Phillips

Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize, RABBIT HOLE examines the couple’s bittersweet search for comfort in an empty house full of tragic reminders.

“David Lindsay-Abaire has crafted a drama that’s not just a departure but a revelation—an intensely emotional examination of grief, laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty.”  – Variety.

Something Rotten
Book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell
Music and Lyrics by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick
October 14-22, 2022
Gallagher Student Center Theatre
Directed by Stephen Skiles

Welcome to the Renaissance, where brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play while being stuck in the shadow of that playwrighting rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

“The funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years.” – Time Out New York

Our Town
By Thornton Wilder
November 18-20, 2022
Gallagher Student Center Theatre
Directed by Aaron Rossini

Our Town depicts the small town of Grover’s Corners as it follows the simple daily lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die. A heartbreaking and heartwarming reminder to never take the moments of life – no matter how large or small – for granted, Thornton Wilder’s theatrical masterpiece remains one of the most well-known and beloved plays of the American stage.

“OUR TOWN is a microcosm. It is also a hauntingly beautiful play.” – New York Times

Lizzie
Music by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt
Lyrics by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Tim Maner
Book by Tim Maner
Additional February 10-18, 2023
Gallagher Student Center Theatre
Directed by Stephen Skiles

In 1892, Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted for the bloody axe murders of her father and stepmother in a small Massachusetts town. 130 years later, four women will tell this gothic story of American mythology set to a blistering and unapologetic punk rock score. LIZZIE is Rage! Power! Betrayal! And BLOODY MURDER!

“Unapologetic, raw, powerful, and disturbing in the best possible way. … This all-female quartet tells the story of the famous serial killer, Lizzie Borden, through a punk rock infused score with a twist of humor…” – OnStage Blog

9 to 5 The Musical
Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton
Book by Patricia Resnick
Based on the Twentieth Century Fox film
March 24-26, 2023
Gallagher Student Center Theatre
Directed by Bethany Kerr

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying hypocrite they call their boss. While he remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie, and with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 is an outrageous, thought-provoking and hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the age of the Rolodex!

“It will leave you with a smile.” – The Guardian

Measure for Measure
By William Shakespeare
April 14-23, 2023
Gallagher Student Center Studio Theatre
Directed by Isabell Trapp

Finding himself in charge of a city ruled by corruption, the Duke cedes control to Angelo, who quickly enforces dated codes of chastity and moral conduct. But when a young nun pleads for her brother’s condemned life, Angelo ensnares her into an impossible situation. MEASURE FOR MEASURE is a stunning story of power, deception, virtue and hypocrisy that examines the double standards in our political, ethical and religious systems.

“…a play that examines the vicious abuses of power that people commit when they think nobody’s watching…” – The New York Times

Gruesome Playground Injuries
By Rajiv Joseph
April 14-23, 2023
Gallagher Student Center Studio Theatre
Directed by Tessa D’Errico

Kayleen and Doug meet for the first time at eight years old in the nurse’s office of their elementary school. Over the course of 30 years, we follow their lives as they intersect through multiple injuries, leading the two childhood friends to compare scars and the physical calamities that keep drawing them together. Gruesome Playground Injuries is an unconventional love story about opening up and allowing someone else to see our own personal scars.

“Mystical, arresting, and quirkily amusing.” – The Washington Post

MU_logoMiami University Theatre announces a season of new and contemporary work that reminds us of the power of community. Working together, we can overcome the most challenging of obstacles and reach new heights of understanding.

In Melanie Marnich’s play These Shining Lives, the women of the Radium Dial factory discover their jobs are slowly destroying their lives. Together they fight for justice, and for their lives to have a greater meaning. The play runs September 28 – October 2  in Gates-Abegglen Theatre, with direction by Cincinnati director, actor, and playwright Torie Wiggins. The design team includes seniors Lauren Lewis (scenery) and Jenna Wrona (lighting), with visiting assistant professor of theatre Lisa Martin-Stuart designing costumes.

Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald invite you into their home in Sharon Pollock’s Angel’s Trumpet. Truths are revealed as the literary couple squares off using weapons of their past, present, and their projected future. Senior Charlotte Perez directs, with designs by junior Jonathan Erwin (scenery), senior Maura Kesterson (costumes), and senior Sydney Cain (lighting). Angel’s Trumpet runs October 26-30 in Studio 88 Theatre. Performances on October 28 and 29 will also be live streamed.

Movement connects the individual performances of Miami Moves, a collection of student-choreographed work curated by visiting assistant professor of theatre Ashley Goos. The eclectic riffs on human movement will feature the lighting design of assistant professor of theatre Marly Wooster. It runs November 12-18 in Gates-Abegglen Theatre.

The Independent Artist Series returns in February, The slate for this free annual festival of student-driven work will be announced in November.

The season comes to a frenzied finale with the British farce The Play That Goes Wrong by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. Laugh along as the Cornley University Players carry on with a 1920’s murder mystery as everything literally falls apart around them. Associate professor of theatre Lewis Magruder directs the chaos while Miami University Theatre’s technical director Curtis Mortimore and guest designer Brian Seckfort team up to design scenery. Visiting assistant professor of theatre Lisa Martin-Stuart designs costumes.
