Passing the Torch with Humor And Grace

HRTC_Angry Raucous and Shamelessly GorgeousStorming the stage at The Human Race Theatre Company this fall is the regional premiere of Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous by Atlanta playwright Pearl Cleage. Featuring an all-local cast of four powerhouse women, this heartfelt comedy takes on passing the torch from one generation to the next, with all of the inherent risks and unknowns.

After decades of self-imposed exile in Amsterdam, actress Anna Campbell and her manager Betty Sampson receive an invitation to remount their controversial performance piece “Naked Wilson.” Uncertain of her reception, Anna auditions her possible replacement, an ambitious young performer whose experience is limited to the adult entertainment industry. These two women confront their differing world views with humor and grace–and still manage to find common ground.

“I am delighted to share Ms. Cleage’s work with Dayton, particularly this play that makes space for a woman’s counterpoint to August Wilson’s famed Century Cycle,” comments Emily N. Wells, The Human Race Theatre Company’s Artistic Director. “Beyond that, I love that she looks at legacy, and what it means to pass on experience and knowledge to the next generation.”

Directed by Cincinnati favorite Torie Wiggins, this fully local cast features Keisha Kemper, Kyndra Jefferies, Marva Williams-Parker, and Bryana Bentley.

Joining Wiggins on the production team are: Dick Block, Scenic Design; John Rensel, Lighting Design; Kristie Osi, Costume Design;  Matthew Tibbs, Sound Design; Brian Haack, Assistant Sound Designer; Sarah Gomes, Props; Carolyn Fast, Production Stage Manager.

CCM and Cincy Shakes Present Vampire Play for Halloween

CCM_Let the Right One InLET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct. 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater

CINCINNATI, OH —UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and the Cincinnati Shakespeare
Company (CSC) present Let The Right One In, a bloody vampire play based on the bestselling novel and award-winning film. Led by CSC Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips, the collaborative performance features professional CSC guest artists and CCM’s student actors.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.

“The production is such a special opportunity for both of these Cincinnati institutions,” Phillips says. “Actors from both CCM and CSC have the opportunity to work on a piece that challenges the imagination, shows the transformative power of adaptation in the theatre, and a brings a uniquely haunting story to life just in time for Halloween.”

Based on the novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, the play follows Oskar, a teenager who is mercilessly bullied by his schoolmates and neglected by his parents. Oskar sees an opportunity for connection in Eli, a mysterious girl who just moved in next door and only comes out at night. Amidst a string of brutal murders by an apparent serial killer, the two form a friendship made more intense by their shared loneliness. But while Oskar’s loneliness stems from the all-too-human struggles of early adolescence, Eli is lonely because she’s been a teenager for a very, very long time.

From Count Dracula to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, vampire legends have captured imaginations for centuries. Aside from supplying gore and scares, what can monsters reveal about loneliness, love and humanity? Adapted for the theater by Jack Thorne, Let The Right One In wields the vampire myth to deliver a dark coming-of-age love story that explores horror and compassion in equal measure.

CCM’s student actors will perform alongside CSC actors Barry Mulholland, Kelly Mengelkoch, Geoffrey Barnes II and Billy Chace. All artists involved — from the actors on stage to the designers and technicians backstage — have the challenge of creating a performance that delivers both genuine emotion and genuine chills.

CCM’s Theatre Design and Production team has some bloody special effects in store, including an edible heart. Audiences beware: there is a content advisory for Let The Right One In. The production is for mature audiences, and includes sexual situations, violence, blood and gore. The play is not appropriate for children 12 and under; parents strongly cautioned.

TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13

CINCINNATI – It’s showtime! Broadway in Cincinnati announced today that single tickets for the North American Tour of BEETLEJUICE, the edgy and irreverent Broadway smash hit musical comedy, will go on sale Friday, October 13. As part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati 23/24 series presented by TriHealth, BEETLEJUICE makes its Cincinnati premiere at the Aronoff Center January 16 – 28. Tickets will be available online at CincinnatiArts.org, by phone at 513.621.ARTS or in person at the Aronoff Center Box Office, downtown.

Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!

BEETLEJUICE is directed by Tony Award® winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!, Director of Warner Bros. forthcoming TOTO, the animated musical film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo and Emma Chichester Clark’s 2017 book) with an original score by Tony Award nominee Eddie Perfect (King Kong); a book by Tony Award nominee Scott Brown (“Castle Rock”) and Tony and Emmy Award® nominee Anthony King (“Robbie”); music supervision, orchestrations and incidental music by Kris Kukul (Joan of Arc: Into the Fire); and choreography by Connor Gallagher (The Robber Bridegroom).

BEETLEJUICE features scenic design by three-time Tony Award nominee David Korins (Hamilton); costume design by six-time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long (The Producers); lighting design by Tony Award winner Kenneth Posner (Kinky Boots); sound design by Tony Award winner Peter Hylenski (Moulin Rouge!); projection design by Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award winner Peter Nigrini (Dear Evan Hansen); puppet design by Drama Desk Award winner Michael Curry (The Lion King); special effects design by Jeremy Chernick (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), hair and wig design by Drama Desk Award nominee Charles G. LaPointe; make-up design by Joe Dulude II; associate director is Catie Davis and associate choreographer is Michael Fatica; casting by The Telsey Office.

Producers for BEETLEJUICE include Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Langley Park Productions and NETworks Presentations.

BEETLEJUICE opened at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on Thursday, April 25, 2019, presented by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures (Mark Kaufman) and Langley Park Productions (Kevin McCormick), and won the Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for David Korins’ scenic design and was nominated for eight Tony Awards including Best New Musical. BEETLEJUICE had a history making run on Broadway – following the release of the musicals original Broadway cast recording and Tony Awards appearance, the box office exploded, making it the surprise hit of the 2018/2019 season. BEETLEJUICE’s Tony Awards performance has gone on to be the most watched musical number from the broadcast with over 3,921,530 views. BEETLEJUICE became a sensation with fans everywhere including on TikTok, which lead to an additional burst of ticket sales from a new audience for Broadway, making the musical one of the top grossing shows on Broadway, going on to break the Winter Garden box office record. The smash hit musical BEETLEJUICE played 366 performances at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway before being shuttered with the rest of Broadway on March 12, 2020. BEETLEJUICE returned triumphantly to Broadway with performances on April 8, 2022, at the Marquis Theatre where it continues to haunt Broadway through January 8, 2023.

GHOSTLIGHT RECORDS and WARNER RECORDS released BEETLEJUICE – ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING for digital download, streaming and on CD. The album is produced by Tony Award winner Matt Stine, Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, Tony nominee Eddie Perfect and three-time Grammy Award winner Kurt Deutsch and has surpassed 250 million streams in the United States and 760 million streams globally. These landmark numbers continue the remarkable success of the album, reaching the list of top 10 most streamed OBCRs of the previous decade. The show’s songs have placed in Spotify’s “Viral 50” charts in 13 different countries. In addition, “Say My Name,” one of the show’s breakout showstoppers, was chosen as Amazon’s “Alexa Song of the Day” in 2019. The incredible growth is partly a result of user-generated content on TikTok, where songs from the album have been used in over one million videos.

BEETLEJUICE is based on the 1988 Academy Award®-winning Geffen Company motion picture presented by Warner Bros. and directed by Tim Burton. The smash hit comedy starred Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder with story by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson.

BEETLEJUICE  will play the Aronoff Center from January 16 – 28, 2023: Tuesday – Thursdays at 7:30PM, Fridays at 8:00PM, Saturdays at 2:00PM and 8:00PM, Sundays at 1:00PM and 6:30PM.
