ACT Cincinnati ON CUE Newsletter – Winter 2024

ACT_logoThe electronic newsletter of the Association of Community Theatres of Greater Cincinnati

There is a lot of news to talk about.

The most important news is the location of the 2024 ACT/OCTA Regional Conference. Amanda Emmons Shumate, ACT’s 1st Vice President, has secured Princeton High School’s Matthews Auditorium. The dates are June 14-15, with the 13th if needed. Also, if you haven’t done so yet, secure your rights now- applying now guarantees you can decide later as to what show you wish to excerpt. The pick meeting will be 7:00pm on May 6th, at Matthews auditorium.

The banquet will be held at the Delta by Marriott Cincinnati Sharonville Hotel which is adjacent to the school. Instead of a sit-down dinner, it will be buffet style.  For those of you wishing to book a room, the hotel rate is $119 a night. There is no free breakfast, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Everyone who has attended the banquet facility at the Embassy Suites knows that we have really outgrown this space. Those who attend the awards/party only have been relegated to sit in chairs either placed around the room or on the dance floor. This new hotel has a room large enough to allow you to be seated at designated tables.

You can reserve a room at the hotel now. Delta Hotels Cincinnati Sharonville for 119 USD per night

Book your group rate for ACT Cincinnati

Forrest Goodwin will DJ again this year.

We are very excited about this change and hope this will become a permanent location. Fees to attend may increase slightly.

We are seeking dual corporate sponsorships for banquet and excerpts to offset costs.

Check the ACT website for future information and when registration will be open in April.

The ACT treasurer has secured a new method of payment for registration. ACT will be using Zeffy a fee free platform. We are asking that even if you send in your payment by check that you still go to the site and enter your information.

OCTA NEWS

Let’s talk about the ACT/OCTA Regional Competition.

The Regional is composed of excerpts hosted by OCTA and the banquet/awards/party hosted by ACT. In other areas of Ohio, there is one theatre who acts as host of the regional. That theatre makes all the arrangements, books a theatre and does whatever is necessary to host the competition.

There is no other area in the state that has the great organization that we have in our southwest region. Since all of us are considered the “host” we ALL pitch in to make our regional work. So, that is why at the annual banquet, we have not only ACT awards, but the OCTA awards from the excerpts. Each group has a job to do which are decided by each group’s ACT representative who attends the monthly ACT meetings.

If your group is planning to excerpt, the link to all the information you will need is available on the OCTA website. On the documents and forms page, you will find the Regional Festival Theatre Entry Packet(This is also where you will find the information for the 2025 AACT festival if your group is also to be considered.) The regional entry packet information can also be found on the ACT website.

At this time, there may be as many as 14 groups excerpting. If that holds, the Thursday night of excerpts will be needed. If less than that number, we are looking at only Friday and Saturday. Again, we will keep you updated by as many ways as possible. The number of our groups who are selected to go to the state competition hinges on how many groups excerpt. The OCTA rules are for every 4 groups excerpting, 1 gets picked. Therefore, if we have 14 excerpts, we have 4 groups and an alternate selected to attend the state competition held over Labor Day Weekend. The alternate will be selected if one of our groups cannot go to the state or if needed to meet the OCTA quota. This is done on a rotating basis between the 8 regions.

This is also a year to decide if you want your excerpt to be considered to compete in the AACT festival in 2025. You have to declare at the time you are selected to compete at the state level if you would like to be considered for AACT.

NOW you may ask, what about the state competition. There is a new change here and hopefully it will continue into the future. Excerpts in a real theatre setting.

The 2024 OCTA Conference “Thinking Outside The Box” will be held on August 30 – September 2, 2024 with excerpts taking place at the Midland Theatre in Newark, Ohio. Yes, all the excerpts will take place in a THEATRE! OCTA has again made arrangements for the Cherry Valley Hotel for lodging, the annual banquet, and other after-hours activities. This hotel is under new ownership, and everyone is encouraged to book their stay at this hotel. Even though there were problems with this hotel in the past, OCTA had committed to holding 2024 there. Just like locally, according to the contract there is a minimum of rooms nights that OCTA has to provide in order to NOT incur a penalty. So please, if you are selected to attend the state conference or just plan to attend, plan to stay here. You can book your room now by contacting the hotel directly and asking for OCTA. Let them know if you want 1st floor or 2nd floor near elevator.

As the year progresses, more information will become available.

For all you techies, OCTA has quite a few competitions to enter: costume, set design, props, and newsletter. All of these can be found on the OCTA website. You can find the forms needed under the various categories along with the date the items are due. PLEASE, enter these competitions and get recognized for all your work.

OCTA NEEDS YOU!

SO, you want to have input on how OCTA runs? This is for you.

OCTA is looking for people who are interested in becoming a part of the board. The board consists of not only the regional representatives from the 8 regions of the state, but also an 18-member board elected by its member theatre groups at the annual convention held over Labor Day weekend each year. This is where you come in.

At this time, there are 6 three-year terms that need to be filled on this board. The board, with guidance from the regions, creates and implements policies that govern the organization. If you are interested in being a board member, you are asked to submit an application, which is available on the OCTA website. All other information you need to make an informed decision is attached to the application document.

Can OCTA count on you?

OCTA recognized The Drama Workshop on their 70th anniversary opening night of Becky’s New Car. Peggy Kenney was on hand to present the group with a certificate to celebrate the occasion. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Any errors, mistakes or omissions are not intentional.

Thanks to all of you for being a part of Greater Cincinnati theatre.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Announces 2024-2025 Season

ETC_logo(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC), the region’s premiere theatre, is delighted to announce its 2024-2025 season, which includes a hilarious buddy comedy, an intimate and keep-you-guessing drama, two regional premieres that will be the first productions following hit Broadway runs, and the return of a beloved, whimsical musical!

“Our 39th season is all about what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes, from garbage collectors to hairstylists,” says Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “It’s about what we carry within us that nobody sees from the outside. No one would recognize us if we were turned inside out to show our love, our pain, and our emotion. There’s a lot of underlying humor in these plays, and that’s deliberate. It’s the idea of being in tough situations but still finding joy, strength, and inspiration to go forward.”

About the Plays

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati opens its 39th year with the regional premiere comedy The Garbologists by Lindsay Joelle, September 14 October 2, 2024. Two essential workers from different worlds discover there’s more that binds them than taking out the trash in this off-beat buddy comedy. Danny and Marlowe are polar opposites: he’s a gruff NYC sanitation worker hiding a heart of gold, and she’s a determined Ivy-League-educated “newbie” assigned to his route. Amidst their shifts spent bickering, they each have some wisdom to share, but will the other listen? When thrown together to pick up what the world has discarded, they learn that some things are easier to toss than others.

Then, join the ever-curious Alice and her bubbly friends for an unforgettable tea party this holiday season in Alice in Wonderland, December 4 29, 2024. Based on the beloved, imaginative tale by Lewis Carroll, this modern retelling is the toe-tapping story of a lost girl, a cool cat, a wild hare, and the original “dancing queen.” Written by creative team Joseph McDonough and David Kisor and featuring an updated score and exuberant colorful costumes, this beloved holiday musical will delight audiences of all ages.

Next ETC will present I Need That from February 8 March 2, 2025, by Cincinnati native and award-winning playwright Theresa Rebeck, who will also direct this regional premiere comedy. Meet Sam, an obsessive pack rat bordering on hoarder lost in his own possessions. Faced with the threat of eviction unless he cleans up his property, he can’t seem to let go of anything, despite pleas from his daughter and his friend of thirty years. In his attempt to hold onto his things and thus hold onto his past and himself, Sam is forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two. This hilarious, heartfelt, and human play about life’s messes makes its first regional premiere following its successful Broadway run.

Next, ETC presents the gripping regional premiere drama The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp, April 5 27, 2025. Bella Baird is a brilliant writer and Ivy League professor who prizes her solitude. But when she faces a challenge she cannot tackle alone, she allies herself with a talented and enigmatic student, Christopher. As their lives and the stories they tell about themselves become intertwined in unpredictable ways, Bella asks an unthinkable favor of Christopher—but is it undoable? Deeply moving and brimming with suspense, Adam Rapp’s thrilling play explores the power we hold over each other and questions the limits of what we can ask of others.

ETC’s 2024-2025 season closes with the regional premiere dramedy Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, taking the stage May 31 June 22, 2025. Welcome to Jaja’s bustling hair braiding shop in Harlem where every day, a lively and eclectic group of West African immigrant hair braiders are creating masterpieces on the heads of neighborhood women. During one sweltering summer day, love will blossom, dreams will flourish, and secrets will be revealed. The uncertainty of these immigrant women’s circumstances simmers below the surface of their lives, and when it boils over, this tight-knit community is forced to confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of the place they call home. Written by award-winning Ghanian-American playwright Jocelyn Bioh (School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play), this boisterous and heartwarming play makes its first regional premiere following its dazzling Broadway debut!

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents World Premiere Dramedy THE MATCH GAME, April 13 – May 5

ETC_Match Game(Cincinnati, OH) Families, are we right? Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is thrilled to present the world premiere dramedy The Match Game by Steven Strafford. The 2022 winner of the Jackie Demaline playwriting competition, this hilarious story sees a family upside-down as they do everything but tell the truth to get what they need. Playing April 13 May 5, 2024. Directed by Jared D. Doren. Premiere Sponsor is John Goering.

Steph has typical mid-life woes on her plate: a precocious daughter about to graduate high school and an absentee father who just moved in, who may or may not be faking dementia. Oh, and did we mention she has a little bit of cancer? Steph has ulterior motives for letting in her dad and a grand scheme to pull it off. When the family gathers for a birthday party with a hidden agenda, they’re forced to confront the truths they’ve been too afraid to acknowledge. This world premiere dramedy hilariously reflects on how families aren’t always well matched.

“To be able to nurture, foster, and see to fruition someone’s creation is what theatre is about,” explains ETC Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “We’re thrilled to bring to life the world premiere of The Match Game. It’s exactly the outcome that Jackie Demaline wanted, which was not only to encourage, but to actually produce a play that came across our desk from the competition named in her honor. The fact that we’re going to create something that came out of her spirit and generosity is exciting.”

About the Cast

Originally from St. Louis, she has called this region her artistic home for almost thirty years. Jen is a member of Actor’s Equity with regional credits that include Aimee in The Humans and Rosemary in Outside Mullingar, Ensemble Theatre; Mrs. Hubbard in Murder on the Orient Express, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Jaques in As You Like It and Cleopatra in Cleopatra, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company; Virginie in The Man-Beast, Know Theatre of Cincinnati; and two of her one-person shows premiering at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

Dennis Harrington to Retire From the Aronoff Center’s Weston Art Gallery

Dennis Harrington

[Cincinnati, OH]  The Cincinnati Arts Association announced today the retirement of Weston Art Gallery Director Dennis Harrington after twenty-nine years of dedicated service. He will step down from this position at the end of the Weston’s current 2023-24 season on August 31, 2024.

The award-winning Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center) features the work of local and regional artists and is the only gallery in the Greater Cincinnati area able to commission and support site-specific works. Since opening in 1995, numerous national and international emerging and professional artists, curators, designers, filmmakers, and performers working in all media have found creative and professional support in achieving their artistic vision.

Originally hired as the Weston’s exhibition preparator, Harrington served closely with founding director Salli LoveLarkin, who laid the Gallery’s foundation and forged its early programming efforts from 1995-98. Early in her tenure, LoveLarkin was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Due to the progressive nature of the disease, she retired in May 1998, and Harrington was appointed director in June 1998.

During his long association with the Weston, Harrington was responsible for implementing 284 exhibitions and countless associated performances, workshops, and screenings involving more than 1,200 artists, performers, designers, and curators that reflected the robust visual arts tradition of the region.

“Dennis’ impact on the local and regional visual arts landscape has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Steve Loftin, President, Cincinnati Arts Association. “His authentic commitment to artists, inclusivity, contemporary issues, and high-quality exhibitions have set him and the Weston Art Gallery apart from other institutions. Dennis will leave his eternal legacy on the Weston Art Gallery and the larger Cincinnati arts scene. We wish him much happiness in his retirement.”

Throughout his tenure, Harrington took full advantage of the Weston’s unique glass enclosed street-level atrium space, which served as an incubator for new work and afforded artists opportunities for site-specific installations not available elsewhere in this prominent and highly visible space. The two lower gallery spaces, situated directly beneath the atrium space, were envisioned by Harrington as “flex space” to manipulate and transform to suit the needs of the artists working in those spaces. Providing exceptional service and support to artists became a mainstay for the Weston and its dedicated staff.

“It has been a rich and rewarding experience to be a part of the Weston since its inception in 1995,” said Harrington, reflecting on his many years with the Weston. “I am grateful for the vision of Alice and Harris Weston, who advocated for a visual arts component in the Aronoff Center dedicated to showcasing local and regional artists. The seeds they planted have flourished.  It has been my pleasure and great privilege to work with many outstanding artists and be part of the collective effort and support from CAA President Steve Loftin, the CAA Board, CAA staff, Weston Art Gallery Support Committee, many generous Weston sponsors, and a committed and hard-working Gallery staff to make the Weston such an outstanding success. I look forward to welcoming a new director to the Weston, assisting them in transitioning the Gallery to new leadership,  and continuing to build a strong and exciting future for the Weston.”

Founded in 1992, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of two of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts. Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves upwards of 700,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in the Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center); and supports the work of more than one dozen resident companies. Since the inception of its acclaimed arts education programs in 1995, CAA has reached more than two million students and adults.

The Cincinnati Arts Association and the Weston Art Gallery are supported [in part] by the Ohio Arts Council, which receives support from the State of Ohio and the National Endowment for the Arts.
