Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Presents Emotionally-Charged Drama with Regional Premiere of ANNAPURNA, March 22-April 10, 2016

ETC_Annapurna logo(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati ascends an emotional mountain with the regional premiere of the gripping comedy-drama ANNAPURNA by Sharr White. This powerful story unpacks the tangled history between two ferociously damaged people who battle an avalanche of love, loss, and unanswerable questions. Sharr White’s sharp and poetic writing returns to the ETC stage in this darkly-funny production, playing March 22-April 10, 2016. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers.

What if you had experienced the defining moment of your life—but couldn’t remember it? Twenty years ago Emma walked out on cowboy-poet Ulysses in the middle of the night, taking their young son with her. That’s given Ulysses two decades to write his magnum opus, perfect his naked cooking techniques, and move into a dingy trailer with a phone-eating dog. Now, hearing he’s in dire straits, Emma tracks him down to a trailer park in the wilds of Colorado to hash out the best and worst of their marriage, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her departure. Their reunion, alternately comic and conflicted, is full of razor sharp wit and brutal honesty.

“Sharr White has a magnificently beautiful voice for dealing with very difficult human issues in rather poetic and articulate ways,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “I love that he uses the imagery of this massive mountain to symbolize how we climb in our daily lives. He puts us at the base with people who have a deep and devastating mystery hanging between them, showing us that the longest journey to any relationship, and to the heart of anyone, is more perilous than scaling any mountain range.”

The Carnegie Closes 2015-16 Season with THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Playing Weekends April 9-24, 2016

TC_The Last Five Years promo

(COVINGTON, KY) – Relationships are complicated. They evolve over time and look different to everyone involved. Issues that are clear at the end of a relationship may not look like problems at the beginning. THE LAST FIVE YEARS, playing at The Carnegie weekends April 9-24, 2016, explores the relationship of Jamie and Cathy, a young couple struggling to find balance between career and relationship.

In a creative twist that makes this show pure magic, Tony Award winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown takes us on an adventure through their story, following Jamie from the beginning of their romance to the end and following Cathy from the end to the beginning. Their storytelling overlaps for just a moment, on the day of their wedding, for one of the most beautiful duets ever written for the musical theatre.

“The LAST FIVE YEARS is a great piece of contemporary theatre, with a brilliant score,” said Carnegie Theatre Director Maggie Perrino. “The storytelling is unique because you see the build-up and the let-down at the same time and question the perspective and reliability of the narrators.”

The LAST FIVE YEARS features a two-person cast, with Leslie Kelly as Cathy and Wes Carman as Jamie. In addition to being accomplished vocalists and actors, Kelly and Carman are both accomplished musicians. Kelly will play some of the songs on piano while Carman will play cello.

Those who have seen the movie adaptation of THE LAST FIVE YEARS starring Academy Award and Tony Award nominee Anna Kendrick and Tony Award and Grammy Award nominee Jeremy Jordan, will enjoy the scenic twist that Tyler Gabbard created for the show.

“The set is almost entirely based on doors and serves as an analogy for the emotions of the characters as they open and close the door to their relationship,” said Perrino. “They can walk in and start something new, or walk out and close the door as something ends.”

Performances of THE LAST FIVE YEARS run weekends April 9-24, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m.  The Tristate Chamber Players will perform pieces by Strauss in the gallery for a special happy hour prior to the two Friday evening performances. The appearance of the Tristate Chamber Players is made possible through generous funding from the Ohio Arts Council and members of the community.

Tickets for THE LAST FIVE YEARS are $28, $25 for Carnegie Members and Enjoy the Arts Members. Patrons interested in member, student, and group discounts should call The Carnegie Box Office at (859) 957-1940.  Tickets to Carnegie Theater Series performances are available at The Carnegie Box Office, open Tuesday through Friday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., online at www.thecarnegie.com, or by phone at (859) 957-1940.

The 2015-16 Carnegie Theatre Series is sponsored by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation. The 2015-16 Season Program is sponsored by Paula & Glenn Wienkoop.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY  10019. Phone: 212-541-4684 Fax: 212-397-4684 http://www.MTIShows.com.

Weddings, The Bard, Savannah, Avenging and Winnie the Pooh Hit Sunset Players Stage Next Season

SSP_logoCINCINNATI, OH – March 11, 2016 —Sunset Players unveiled its 37th season of performances at the Arts Center at Dunham.

“The upcoming Sunset Players’ season brings a host of characters, premieres and laughs to the Arts Center at Dunham stage,” said Mike Burke, president of Sunset Players. “This schedule is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.”

The 2016-2017 Sunset Players season line-up is:

THE WEDDING SINGER, Book by Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, Music by Matthew Sklar. Lyrics by Chad Beguelin, Performances in October 2016.

Go back in time to 1985 when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer was the coolest guy in the room. New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer Robbie Hart is the life of the party, until his fiancée leaves him at the altar. Enter a winsome waitress, Julia, who is engaged to a Wall Street shark and captures Robbie’s heart. Now he must pull off the performance of a decade before the girl of his dreams is gone forever.

THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER, by A.A. Milne. Performances in December 2016.

Christopher Robin has decided to run away with his friends Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger and the gang after hearing a dark, mysterious threat that he’s to be sent away to Education. Nobody knows exactly what that is or what they can possibly do without him? As the situation becomes clearer, Christopher Robin isn’t so sure that running away is the answer.

THE COMPLETE WORK OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) (REVISED), by Jess Borgeson, Adam Long and Daniel Singer. Performances in February 2017.

No time to read all of William Shakespeare’s works? Never fear. This much-produced, fast-paced, gag-a-second delight deconstructs all 37 of the Bard’s plays—plus the sonnets—into a single two-hour whirlwind.

THE SAVANNAH SIPPING SOCIETY, by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. Performances in May 2017.

A Regional Premiere, meet four Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines, are drawn together by Fate—and an impromptu happy hour—and decide it is high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for life they’ve lost through the years. Over the course of six months filled with laughter, hilarious misadventures, and the occasional liquid refreshment, these middle-aged women successfully bond and find the confidence to jumpstart their new lives.

THE TOXIC AVENGER, Book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, Music and lyrics by David Bryan. Performances in July 2017.

A Regional Community Theater Premiere and winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, The Toxic Avenger is a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical that has it all — an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and two guys who play everyone else, from bullies, mobsters, old ladies, and stiletto-wearing back-up singers. Featuring a wailing rock score, this comical musical has something for everyone to enjoy and will leave audiences laughing in the aisles as it rocks the house.

Sign language interpreters from Cincinnati State will continue to sign for select shows throughout the season.

Tickets remain on sale for the remaining 2015-2016 Season. Performances include:

  • Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, by Mitch Albom. Performances in May 6-21, 2016.
This uproarious story centers on two bumbling Alabama brothers who think they shot an angel while duck hunting. As they lament their fates, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and a reluctant photographer who don’t believe any of it—until feathers, wings and a tiara are discovered. The play interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase ensues to find the angel in the swamp.
  • American Idiot, Book and Lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong, Book by Michael Mayer, Music and Lyrics by Green Day. Performances in July 8-23, 2016.
A regional community theater premiere, a trio of friends: Johnny, Tunny and Will, struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for big city thrills, their paths quickly diverge. Tunny enters the armed forces, Michael goes home to manage family responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. The energy-fueled rock opera relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to propel the story.

Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 pm. Sunday matinee starts at 3 pm, and Thursday performance is at 7:30 pm

Know Theatre and dog and pony dc Announce ASL and Spoken English Interpreted Performance of BEERTOWN on March 19

“Creating a community and revising its history nightly”

Know Theatre and dog & pony dc are pleased to announce that on March 19, we will be offering an American Sign Language and Spoken English Interpreted performance of Beertown.

Part theatrical pageant, part civic ceremony, part Choose Your Own AdventureBeertown is a thoroughly unique theatrical experience.

Beertown, entering its second week of performances this week, is already garnering critical acclaim.

CityBeat’s Rick Pender says Beertown is “both thoughtful and entertaining” and “sneaks up on you with profound messages when you least expect them.”

Grace Eichler of the League of Cincinnati Theatres says “I heartily enjoyed opening night, and I’m sure that audiences will continue to do so, as each night brings a new bout of opinions and rationales,” while Abby Rowald declared that “Once again, The Know is staying true to its mission of being “Cincinnati’s Theatrical Playground,” and this is an exciting direction for Cincinnati theatre to be moving towards.”

In keeping with the missions of both companies, Know Theatre and dog & pony dc are proud to make the experience of Beertown accessible to more of the Cincinnati community by providing ASL and Spoken English interpretation at our March 19th performance at 8PM.

About the show: Cincinnati is the latest stop of Beertown Takes America, a national touring project where dog & pony dc artists collaborate with local artists and the greater communities of cities across the country to craft new and locally-relevant versions of the company’s signature show Beertown.

dog & pony dc’s ensemble-devised Beertown is an interactive exploration of history, civic ritual, identity, community, and memory incorporating live music, dance, group song…and it all starts with a  dessert potluck.

At Beertown, audiences join the 20th Quinquennial Beertown Time Capsule Day celebration, where every five years the imagined American town unearths its beloved Time Capsule and decides what stays, what goes, and what new symbols of Beertown should be interred this time.

Which tells the story of our town better: A campaign button or a family bible? A license plate or a movie projector? You, the audience, help them decide each night!

Visit a place where remembering is a communal act, and everyone’s voice is counted: Beertown.

For tickets and more information, call 513-300-5669 or visit www.knowtheatre.com.

ABOUT dog & pony dc
dog & pony dc (dpdc) is an ensemble of artists who devise performances that incorporate new ways for audiences to experience theatre. We create (“devise”) new plays as a collective (“ensemble”).
dpdc shows playfully extend the elastic relationship between artist and audience while asking big, sometimes strenuous, questions about the world in which we live.

Since 2008, dpdc has devised ten shows that span a wide stylistic range: from PUNCH!, an ultra-violent live-action version of the Punch and Judy puppet show, to TOAST, the convening of a 200 year old secret society of inventors trying to save the world through technology (starting with the electric toaster).

We currently work in two languages, English and American Sign Language.

BEERTOWN was the first ensemble-devised show to receive a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding New Play (2011) and made top 10 shops list in DC (Washington Post, 2012) and Omaha (World-Herald, 2015). A KILLING GAME won “Dr. Robert J. Thierauf Producers’ Pick of the Fringe Award” at Cincinnati Fringe Festival (2013) and Best Production 2013 (DC Metro Theatre Arts). In 2015, we were 1 of 15 recipients of DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities Innovate DC grants.  www.dogandponydc.com
