(CINCINNATI) — Clara, an aerial silks and dance theatre production by Aly Michaud and Carley Wilson, makes its debut at the 2016 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Directed by Michaud and choreographed by Wilson, the show features aerialist Holly Price alongside a cast of nine dancers. Performances begin Wednesday, June 1, at 6:00 p.m. on the mainstage of the Know Theatre of Cincinnati.

Using dance, theatre and aerial silks, Clara is a singular theatrical event that tells the remarkable true story of one woman’s fortitude despite tremendous adversity. Delve through time from the Depression and World War II to today to meet Clara at three pivotal ages: as a child, as a young adult and as a mature older woman who discovers that, in the face of loss and betrayal, the resilient know that strength, hope and appreciation remain.

The show features audio interviews with Michaud’s actual 94-year-old grandmother, Clara. Sound bites of Clara describing major events in her life are mixed into the music of the production, which includes a variety of folk rock, indie pop and alternative rock songs. This combination creates a theatrical storytelling pattern that allows us to both understand and explore the events of Clara’s past.

“The dance itself is a combination of a lot of different styles,” explains Wilson, who has choreographed numerous award-winning competition dances. Contemporary dance is the base, but the show’s movement incorporates acrobatics, ballet, jazz and modern dance as well. “It’s not a ‘by-the-book’ style,” she continues, “it’s very free and melds differently into each song and into the intention behind each scene. It also allows us to cater the movement to the capabilities of each dancer as opposed to adhering to the requirements of a certain dance style.”

Aerial silks — acrobatics performed while suspended from fabric hanging from the ceilingis an integral part of this storytelling experience. Aerialist Price performs alongside the cast of nine dancers as she embodies the mature, adult form of the Clara we hear over the music. “I’m being emotionally and physically challenged by the depth of this work,” says Price. “I’m immersing myself into the talented work of the dancers as we dive deep into this fully fleshed out work of art.”

Price’s performance with the silks became a metaphor for the climb of both Clara’s life and of life in general. “There’s a constant gravitational pull toward the ground and toward the facts of life,” explains Michaud, “and a constant use of friction to maintain some semblance of equilibrium. We fall or choose to descend gracefully, and then we are faced time and time again with the choice of whether or not to get back up and climb higher. All three of these mechanisms — Clara’s voice, dance and the silks — coalesce into an encapsulating way to tell this story of resilience.”

Ranging from 11 to 41 years old, the cast includes Victoria Bower, Kami Fleming, Ian Timothy Forsgren, Devon McClea, Clare Miller, Bella Grace Motto, Hannah Price, Holly Price, Sarah Rolfsen and Alyssa Hope Stanforth. Clara features costume design by Sarah Fickling, lighting design by Anna Kirkland, sound design by Trey Tatum and stage management by Katy Ward.

Clara is sponsored by Robert Lindner and a number of individual donors, and is supported by Bella Forza Fitness.

Physical Productions is a new Cincinnati-based company that produces art which harnesses the power of the human body to tell theatrical stories. Clara is its debut production.

Walnut Hills Group Theatre Presents A NIGHT WITH DREAM KEEPER in FringeNext Series

As a part of this year’s Cincinnati Fringe Festival’s FringeNext Series
The Walnut Hills Group Theatre proudly presents
A NIGHT WITH THE DREAM KEEPER by Austin Lamewona

CFF_A Night with the Dream Keeper logoCincinnati, Ohio – May 21, 2016 – For the first time in history, an audience is welcomed into the private library of the Dream Keeper, a supernatural being who watches and records people’s dreams. For one night, the Dream Keeper will weave through the dreams and subsequent real-life sequences of four very interesting characters who come from four very different walks of life.

Austin Lamewona is the winner of the Against The Grain Student Playwriting Contest, an international competition that received submissions from six continents, seventeen countries, and featured one high school winner to receive a workshop with professional actors, directors, and designers in New York. His winning play, A NIGHT WITH THE DREAM KEEPER, will be showing in the Art Academy Auditorium as a part of this year’s Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

A NIGHT WITH THE DREAM KEEPER saw its premiere on May 18, 2016 in the Walnut Hills High School Recital Hall with a full house.  The show is produced, directed, and performed entirely by WHHS students. It has been in the works since August and features Seniors, Austin Lamewona, Maddie Eaton, and Claire Patterson, and Juniors Devin Knott and Kayla Fiasco.

Austin Lamewona, wrote, directed, and also plays Unk in the production of A NIGHT WITH THE DREAM KEEPER. He has had another play, Next, published by the online publisher, Off the Wall Plays. Maddie Eaton plays the Dream Keeper, the title character and bubbly hostess of the evening. She has not only won local awards for her roles in WHHS productions, but will also be attending the Michigan University school of theatre in the fall. Claire Patterson plays Kourtney, the good-natured antagonist of the show. She has also been a mainstay in the Walnut Hills theatre department and will be studying Psychology and will be studying psychology and early childhood education at Belmont University in Nashville.

“Being able to finally show what the students can do and show what they’ve learned just from high school theatre and being mentored by truly talented teachers” sums up what the experience of a student-run production is like to Junior, Devin Knott. And judging from the success of the May 18 premiere of this charming and poignant piece, these students comprise quite the dream team.

A NIGHT WITH THE DREAM KEEPER will be performed in the Art Academy Auditorium at the following dates and times:

June 4 @ 7:15
June 6 @8:45
June 7 @ 8:00
June 9 @ 6:30

Schedule C Productions Proudly Presents VELOUR at Cincy Fringe 2016

CFF_Velour logoThe creators of Where Is My Mind? (Critic’s Pick 2012) and The King & I: a Hunk of Burnin’ Love (Critic’s Pick 2014) are back for their 3rd Cincy Fringe with VELOUR, the story of Vinnie Velour,  former Driver to the Stars and current wannabe lounge singer. After his opening gig at the Palace Hotel Ballroom goes badly, Vinnie must fight for the right to sing again via a series of audience-chosen variety acts, including everything from plate spinning to tightrope walking, sword swallowing, and more. The audience choice component offers 27 possible outcomes, making every show completely unique!

“Most fun I’ve had fringing so far. One of this year’s best!” ~Indyfringetalks.com

CFF_Velour promoKevin Holladay, creator and star of VELOUR, has always been a fan of Hollywood’s Golden Age, when entertainers would routinely sing, dance, and perform variety acts in addition to acting. In fact, he’s spent much of his life being a bit of a renaissance artist himself, generating work as a playwright, actor, musician, storyteller, emcee, professional wrestler, and circus clown. Holladay was even an artist/instructor with the National Circus Project in New York, where he developed many of the variety acts in VELOUR.

“There’s nothing Vinnie can’t do…à la the screwball comedies of the ‘40’s. He also delivers the wildest, weirdest range of songs; including crooner classics, Mr. Rogers covers, and the funniest version of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ I’ll ever see.” ~Nuvo Magazine

“Velour is a true talent.” ~John Lyle Beldon

Holladay is joined onstage by Jesska Pinyon, who plays the sassy, straight-shooting Palace Ballroom Booking Manager, Lux Lamé. Pinyon is Holladay’s partner in life as well as in his company, Schedule C Productions, having joined the team in 2013 to play the female lead in his play, The King & I: a Hunk of Burnin’ Love. The couple performed the show together at festivals in Cincy, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Rochester, NY, as well as at a special command performance for Elvis’s 80th birthday sponsored by the Indy Eleven professional soccer team. They premiered VELOUR at the 2015 Indyfringe, but have a special place in their hearts for the Cincinnati festival, where they actually got engaged in front of a sold out house the year before.

“Funny, sweet, well-written, and expertly performed, VELOUR even jerked a tear. One of my top picks!” ~Casey Ross Productions

VELOUR has a run time of 55 minutes, and can be seen at the Arts Academy Commons:

Friday, June 3, 6:30pm
Sunday, June 5, 6:30pm
Monday, June 6, 9:05pm
Friday, June 10, 9:20pm
Saturday, June 11, 3:00pm

Holladay will also be performing at the same venue in The O’Debra Sisters’, The Secrets of Avondale Falls. Visit www.cincyfringe.com for tickets and more information.

Cincinnati Theatre Going National

Cincinnati’s All Shades Theater Performs its latest play in Three Fringe Festivals

CFF_Duryodhana logoCincinnati, OH. May 16, 2016: All Shades Theater of Cincinnati brings on stage its most recent production, DURYODHANA – THE UNCONQUERABLE during the forthcoming Cincy Fringe Festival organized and hosted by Know Theatres. During the ten day long festival, DURYODHANA – THE UNCONQUERABLE is scheduled to be staged five times beginning on June 1, 2016.

DURYODHANA is one of the most prominent characters from the great epic of Mahabharata. He is the main antagonist in this epic.

The literal translation of the word ‘Duryodhana’ is unconquerable. Thus the title emphatically expresses. But is there truly anyone who can be unconquerable? What happens to a person who feels invincible? And when he is defeated what comes after he falls? How does he view the world around him? And how does he impact the lives around him? What does life mean to him? How does he weigh values?

The play thematically explores the possible answers to those questions. Events in Mahabharata are believed to have taken place around 3139 BC and believed to be written between 540 BC and 300 BC. Regardless of the unverifiable authenticity of this timeline, a story that depicts human struggle of survival through the subtle paths of virtue, value and vision from thousands of years ago is still valid in today’s life. Jealousy, wrath, revenge as well as the conflicts of love, morality and austerity still prevail in contemporary societal structures and its constitutions.

Through the words of Duryodhana and his wife Bhanumoti, this play attempts to portray the nature of the rulers through the ages of history and the similarities as well as the universality of all rulers and ruling powers. Power thus becomes the central focus of the story while evolving around the struggle within it. From the emperors to the kings, to the provincial heads, to the landlords, to the commoners how the periphery of power, though get narrower, circulate with same intensity.

Mahabharata is not just an epic from the eastern world – the universality of it is explicitly observable throughout the world. It is not a story of gods and goddesses – it is rather a profound philosophy of the entire human race – full of flesh and blood. It has no boundary and no sectarian limitations, nor does the character of Duryodhana.

Do we see a glimpse of the modern day politics played by the politicians of our time? Do we see that nothing really has changed when it comes to ruling over people? Do we see, kings and prime ministers and presidents and chancellors occupying the same chair everywhere with exact same hidden agendas? Do we see Duryodhana or do we see all the leaders from our present time? In the disguise of Duryodhana, the character eventually transports the audience inside their home and inside their hearts. Do they see
themselves in the mirror called Duryodhana? Isn’t each of our life is an epic? Are we not another Duryodhana? Are we not another one of Duryodhana’s subject who while remaining silent, aspires to become him?

Thus a character and its corruption engulf our souls, our minds, our hearts and our psych. Thus a story that is otherwise foreign becomes identifiable with people from all parts of geography and of all backgrounds. Thus a play loses its regional appearance and becomes universal. Thus a theater becomes life. Borderless and free of boundary.

From its inception, All Shades Theater has been engaged to create a bridge between the theater of the east and theater of the west. All shades truly incorporate all the shades of life and all the shades of creation. And thus it remains color blind or colorless. DURYODHANA – THE UNCONQUERABLE is a production towards the same objective where All Shades Theater attempts to take another bold step towards introducing a story from the east and to assimilate with the west. The style of the western theater and its grammar are being embraced yet the essence of eastern theory of theater remains uncorrupted.

Following the performances at the Cincy Fringe Festival, All Shades Theater is scheduled to take this play on to the road. DURYODHANA – THE UNCONQUERABLE will be performed at the Chicago Fringe Festival between August 31 and September 11, 2016 and thereafter at the San Francisco Fringe Festival between September 11 and September 26, 2016.

DURYODHANA – THE UNCONQUERABLE is an original play written by Prabir Das of All Shades Theater and directed by Daryl Harris. Cast include Katie Eichler as Bhanumati and Taylor Greatbatch as Duryodhana. Scenic design by Tyler Gabbard. Sound and light design is being done by Bryce Liebert. Stage manager is Amanda Miller.

All Shades Theater is expected to take this play for an international tour to India in 2017.
