CCM’s Studio Musical Theatre Series Presents CHILDREN OF EDEN March 30-April 2

CCM_logoUC’s College-Conservatory of Music presents Children of Eden, a two-act musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by John Caird, on Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. The production is directed and choreographed by Vince DeGeorge, with musical direction by Steve Goers.

Like all Studio Series productions, admission to Children of Eden is free, but tickets are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, March 27, and can be reserved by visiting the CCM Box Office or calling 513-556-4183.

Schwartz, known for his smash-hit musicals that include Wicked and Godspell, created Children of Eden in 1986 for Youth Sing Praise, a religious high school theatre camp in Illinois. It was originally shorter and titled Family Tree, but Schwartz later expanded and renamed it. The musical as it exists today was premiered in 1991 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End.

The musical’s two acts relate the story of Adam and Eve and their children, followed by the tale of Noah and his family. In the first act, Adam and Eve interact with the Father (God) in Eden and are ultimately banished from the garden after they consume the forbidden fruit. We follow the couple through their trials with their children, Cain and Abel, the former of whom ultimately kills the latter.

In the second half of the show, Noah and his family are preparing for the great flood, including Noah’s son Japheth, who is determined to marry his family’s servant Yonah, a descendant of Cain. During the act, Noah laments the difficulty of being a good father, as does the omnipotent Father, who ultimately decides to grant his children the power of self-determination.

With free admission and limited seating, CCM’s Studio Series productions remain one of the hottest tickets in town. Learn more about how secure your tickets by visiting ccm.uc.edu/about/villagenews/did-you-know/how-to-studio-series.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Closes Season with Regional Premiere Drama BLOOMSDAY, April 4-23, 2017

ETC_Bloomsday logo(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) closes its 31st season with a trip to Ireland in the regional premiere of Bloomsday by award-winning playwright Steven Dietz. Set against the backdrop of James Joyce’s groundbreaking modernist novel Ulysses, an American man searches for the Irish woman who first captured his heart 35 years earlier during a Bloomsday walking tour in Dublin. This lyrical, intriguing drama transports audiences into a world of history, humor, and heartache to explore a love affair that might have been. Playing April 4-23, 2017. Directed by Michael Evan Haney.

James Joyce’s mega-novel Ulysses (itself based on The Odyssey) charts the life of an Irish man, Leopold Bloom, on June 16, 1904—a day now celebrated annually as Bloomsday worldwide. Dietz’s play finds Robert, a modern-day, middle-aged American, time-traveling to 1980s Dublin in search of Cait, a Bloomsday tour guide and the woman he once loved. Dancing backwards through time, they relive the unlikely, inevitable events that brought them—if only briefly—together. Not just another what-might-have-been story, this charming, Irish time-travel-love-odyssey is a buoyant, moving appeal for making the most of the present before it is past.

“It’s hard to go wrong when you pick up a Steven Dietz play,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “There is an honesty in his writing that is unparalleled. Bloomsday gives us the perfect opportunity to get in touch with our younger and present selves.” Guest Director Michael Evan Haney adds “Bloomsday is the kind of story that we conjure up in those foggy moments before we sleep or before we are truly awake. It examines the subject of lost chances and lost love and how we rationalize the decisions we make in our lives. It’s a dream play.”

CT_Small Engine Repair promo

CINCINNATI OHIO–MARCH 23, 2017– Opening March 30, 2017 a comedy, SMALL ENGINE REPAIR will run at Clifton Performance Theatre through April 16, 2017.

Producer and Actor Carter Bratton says about, SMALL ENGINE REPAIR: “It’s about life-long friendship and loyalty. What ultimately made me need to produce it is the question it raises about the difference between men and boys and how their actions butterfly effect this modern world… and it’s the funniest most thrilling piece of theatre I’ve read in a long time.”

“What begins as an impromptu reunion of three childhood friends quickly changes gears into a high-octane, edge of your seat roller-coaster of a play with an ending you have to see to believe!” said director, Jared Doren. “SMALL ENGINE REPAIR by John Pollono, is a hilariously crude and irreverent comedy-thriller about middle-aged men living in a fast-paced, social media world they don’t quite understand anymore.”

Featuring: Nathan Neorr, Charlie Roetting, Carter Bratton and Rupert Spraul. Directed by: Jared Doren. Produced by: Carter Bratton, Untethered Theatre, & Clifton Players.

Synopsis: Former high school buddies Frank, Swaino and Packie—now past their prime—meet off-hours one night in Frank’s out-of-the-way repair shop under cloudy circumstances that only Frank seems to have a handle on. Enter Chad, a plugged-in, preppy college jock, whose arrival ignites a long-simmering resentment that sets this taut, twisty, comic thriller on its breathless course.

Show runs March 30 – April 16, 2017 at Clifton Performance Theatre, 404 Ludlow Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45220. Performances Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm: March 30, 31, April 1, 3 (Industry Night), 6, 7 , 8, 13, 14, 15 with Sunday Matinees at 2pm: April 2, 9 & 15.

Relationships Young and Old Take Shape in Heartwarming ON GOLDEN POND

The Human Race revisits the past and forges new bonds across generations with Ernest Thompson’s classic, April 6 – 23, 2017 at the Loft Theatre

HRTC_On Golden Pond promo1

Dale Hodges as Ethel Thayer & Joneal Joplin as Norman Thayer.

(Dayton, OH) —This April, The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) makes a warm and welcome return to On Golden Pond. For forty-eight years, Norman Thayer and his energetic wife, Ethel, have been spending the summers at their lakeside home on Golden Pond, fishing and watching for loons. This year, their divorced daughter, Chelsea, her new fiancé and his teenage son make an unexpected visit. When Norman develops an unlikely friendship with the boy, it reinvigorates the grumpy retired professor and highlights the rocky relationship between this father and his now middle-aged daughter. As the summer days grow short, there is still time for their family to heal, and to rediscover the joys in everyday life. The preview performance of On Golden Pond is Thursday, April 6. Opening night is Friday, April 7.

The Human Race previously produced On Golden Pond in 1999 for the Victoria Theatre Association in their historic 1,100 namesake theatre. That production was so well received, HRTC President & Artistic Director Kevin Moore felt a return—this time at the company’s home in the intimate Loft Theatre—was a must when selecting shows for the 2016-2017 season. Director and Resident Artist Richard E. Hess agrees. “On Golden Pond is a nostalgic gem,” he explains, “a heart-warming masterpiece full of loving laughter and hopeful tears.” Hess finds the play to be a much-needed respite from the heightened sense of anxiety and hostility present in society today. “It allows me to wrestle with what it means to be good and decent, with family, with friends, and with those we love.” Those are considerations he hopes audiences will take with them. Playwright Thompson’s scenic setting provides the finishing touch for such reflection. “Maine is a state of mind, a place to slow down, to unwind, to reconnect with the essentials,” says Hess. “Time slows, allowing differences to recede as essentials are revealed. It’s lovely On Golden Pond.”

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM

The cast of six includes Human Race veterans as well as faces who are new to local audiences.

Joneal Joplin (HRTC’s Proof and All My Sons, A Christmas Carol at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Man of La Mancha at Insight Theatre Company) is the cantankerous “Norman Thayer.” Dale Hodges (HRTC’s Romeo and Juliet, Steel Magnolias and After Play, A Christmas Carol at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park) plays his lively, devoted wife, “Ethel.” Resident Artist Jennifer Joplin (26 Pebbles, The Glass Menagerie, Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage at The Human Race) makes her fourth onstage appearance with her real-life father, Joneal, as the Thayers’ estranged daughter, “Chelsea.” Cincinnati native Ken Early (Around the World in 80 Days at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, To Kill a Mockingbird at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company) makes his Human Race debut as Chelsea’s fiancé, “Bill Ray.” Stivers School for the Arts student Kaleb Barlow takes on his first professional appearance as Bill’s teenage son, “Billy Ray.” On Golden Pond marks a long-awaited return to The Human Race for Charlie Clark (The Human Race’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Sisters Rosensweig and Patient A) as Chelsea’s old flame, “Charlie Martin.”

This is the second time Richard E. Hess has directed the Joplins, once again as father and daughter. He describes the experience fondly. “You know how you feel when someone gives you a very, very special present, a once in a lifetime present, a present so rare that you can’t believe you have it? And you think ‘that’s it, I’m set forever.’ That’s how I felt when I directed Jen and Joneal in The Human Race’s Proof in 2003. And now, 14 years later, to be given such a gift a second time? It’s inconceivably delicious.”

On Golden Pond is the seventeenth Human Race production for scenic designer and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music professor Mark Halpin. With over 40 years of professional experience, costume designer Kathie Brookfield returns for her second Human Race production with director Hess. Resident Artists John Rensel (lighting designer) and Jay Brunner(sound designer) round out the design team. Lexi Muller is the production stage manager.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of On Golden Pond is sponsored by the DP&L Foundation, Emerson Climate Technologies, Two Friends, The Richard A. and Mary T. Whitney Fund for the Arts, Susan S. Kettering and Patti Giering.

West Side Arts Groups Announce Merger

CLP MCP_logosCincinnati Landmark Productions and Madcap Puppets Combine
to Create Multi-Faceted Performing Arts Organization

with Renewed Efforts to Build Westwood Education Center

At an event this afternoon, officials from Cincinnati Landmark Productions and Madcap Puppets announced a merger of the two venerable west-side arts organizations, as well as new funding that will make possible the long-awaited puppet and education center in Westwood.

Cincinnati Landmark Productions (CLP) is the non-profit owner and operator of the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts in West Price Hill and the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater in East Price Hill. Madcap Puppets – based in Westwood – has provided touring children’s programming since 1981 and annually presents over 600 performances across 15 states for 160,000 children.

Madcap Puppets becomes a division of Cincinnati Landmark Productions and will continue to tour and offer its in-town programming.

“It’s a thrill to have Madcap Puppets join with Cincinnati Landmark Productions,” said Tim Perrino, Executive Artistic Director of Cincinnati Landmark Productions. “As the Madcap Education Center comes on line, it will be home to the trademark life-size puppet performances, a jumping off point for show tours but also a hub for classes, camps and performing arts education opportunities – in the heart of Westwood’s revitalized business district and across the street from Westwood Town Hall where Cincinnati Landmark Productions was born as Cincinnati Young People’s Theater in 1982. It truly is a homecoming for this newly merged company.”

“The merger between CLP and Madcap gives us the opportunity to build a larger and more engaged audience for puppet theatre in Cincinnati,” said Dylan Shelton, Artistic Director for Madcap. “The growth potential is very exciting.”

MCP_New TheatreOfficials from the arts groups also joined City of Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and representatives from Cincinnati Development Fund and WestCURC to announce a partnership to utilize federal and state New Markets Tax Credits for Madcap’s previously announced Westwood project at 3064 Urwiler Ave. If successful, the project would be completed in concert with the city’s $4 million investment in the Westwood Town Hall property, located directly across the street.

“We’re confident that the new Madcap Education Center will have a tremendous impact for Westwood and for our city,” said Jeanne Golliher, President and CEO of Cincinnati Development Fund. “Cultural facilities projects like this can catalyze investment and development in a neighborhood. And with these two great arts organizations merged together at the helm, this is truly a project worth celebrating.”

MCP_New Atrium“Since we acquired the building and plans for the Madcap Education Center were first announced, we have successfully worked to attract businesses that complement Madcap and the families and patrons who will come, and we are underway with the redevelopment of the Town Hall Park and Gaines Triangle,” said Elizabeth Bartley, Executive Director of WestCURC, Westwood’s urban redevelopment corporation. “All of this activity has kept Madcap at the center and now this anchor will play such a large role here for many years to come.”

This additional funding for the Madcap Education Center – the future home of Madcap Puppets and site of children’s programming, special events and arts education classes, workshops and summer camps – takes the $4.2 million project from roughly 20 percent funded to over 90 percent. Previous fundraising efforts account for roughly $1 million raised and expected New Markets Tax Credits net proceeds are estimated at $2.2 million. Cincinnati Landmark Productions and Madcap are contributing assets of roughly $600,000 toward the project.

Officials announced at the event the final stage of private fundraising to make the long-awaited project a reality. The project funding gap is estimated at $400,000.

Sponsorships and Donor programs for the new building are available.
