DON’T TALK TO THE ACTORS Comes to Ft. Thomas Beginning April 21

[Fort Thomas, Kentucky] –  Village Players of Fort Thomas presents its final show for the 2016-2017 season, DON’T TALK TO THE ACTORS by Tom Dudzick.  Performances for this production will be Apr. 21st (Fri.), 22nd (Sat.), 27th (Thu.), 28th (Fri.), 29th (Sat.) @ 8:00 PM and April 23rd (Sun.) @ 3:00 PM.

The best laid plans go awry when the cast and crew of a Broadway-bound play resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandon to get what they want. Fledgling playwright Jerry Przpezniak and his fiancée are a couple of Buffalo greenhorns suddenly swept up in the whirlwind of New York’s theater scene when Jerry’s play is optioned for the big money, ego-driven world of Broadway. It’s a young playwright’s dream, but the crazy characters and dilemmas they encounter are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. The cast includes Aaron Whitehead, Patricia Mullins, Alan Kootsher, Heather Abbott, Mark Metzner and Marypat Carletti.  This production is directed by Merritt Beischel, produced by Nathan Henegar and stage managed by Steve Winslow.

Village Players began in 1966 when members of the Fort Thomas Woman’s Club formed a community theatre department and renovated the lower level of the building to house a unique and intimate 102-seat three-quarter thrust stage. Village Players is a member of KTA, OCTA, ACT-Cincinnati and AACT. Located at 8 North Fort Thomas Avenue, Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Village Players mounts four productions each year and donates the proceeds of its spring production to charity. Falcon Theatre’s Production of MASTER HAROLD…AND THE BOYS to Open May 5

FT_logoNewport, KY — April 5, 2017 — Falcon Theatre closes out its 2016-17 season with Athol Fugard’s intensely powerful MASTER HAROLD…AND THE BOYS. Set in Apartheid South Africa of the 1950s, Master Harold explores racism, hate, and how intertwining relationships affect each other, both for good and for bad.

The story recounts a long and rainy afternoon that a white teenager named Hally spends with Willie and Sam, black servants who work in the tearoom owned by Hally’s mother. Sam has affectionately regarded the teen almost as a nephew since Hally was a child and has tried to shepherd the youth into adulthood. The afternoon’s friendly conversations of pleasant, shared memories and of Hally’s current life are halted by the news that Hally’s absent alcoholic and racist father is coming home from the hospital. Knowing that his father’s tyrannical presence will make his home life unbearable with his drinking, fighting, and need for constant attention, Hally becomes distraught and lashes out at his longtime mentor. The possibly permanent rifts that the teen causes in the relationship become the focus of the story.

The play won the 1982 New York Drama Desk Award and the 1983 London Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Zakes Mokae earned a Tony Award for his portrayal of Sam in the original Broadway production.

The production is directed by Ted Weil and features the following cast:

  • Sam: Ken Early*
  • Hally: Rupert Spraul
  • Willie: Deondra Means

Performances will be May 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 at 8PM. To purchase tickets online please visit www.falcontheater.net or you can call the Box office at 513-479-6783

Race, Gender, and Religion Collide in Know Theatre’s LISTEN FOR THE LIGHT

A World Premiere drama by Kara Lee Corthron
Directed by Tamara Winters
April 21 – May 13

In 1844 Nauvoo, Illinois, Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith rules all.
Or so he thinks.

Know Theatre is proud to conclude our 19th MainStage season with the World Premiere of Kara Lee Corthron’s LISTEN FOR THE LIGHT. This searing new drama follows the intertwined lives of a former slave, a rebellious girl, and the prophet of a new American religion in the tumultuous setting of Nauvoo, Illinois in 1844.

Taking place in the last days before the brutal murder of Joseph Smith at the hands of an angry mob, LISTEN FOR THE LIGHT is a poetic and unflinching examination of the clash between race, gender, and religion in our American identity.

Eli, a former slave turned devoted follower of the Mormon prophet, is charged with watching over Lula, a young girl Joseph desires to make his next polygamous wife. Lula awaits a sign from God before she will agree to wed the Prophet.

But tensions are growing between the Mormon settlers and the nonbelievers, and Joseph is running out of time. It’s 1844 and the Mormon enclave of Nauvoo, Illinois is a powder keg ready to explode.

Know Theatre Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters takes the helm for this world premiere, and is thrilled to have the playwright Kara Lee Corthron in residence to develop this production for Cincinnati. Says Tamara:

I have been a fan of Kara Lee Corthron’s writing for many years, ever since I saw her ambitious and imaginative AliceGraceAnon in New York in 2012. Kara has a poetic sense of language that is well matched by her writing’s utter fearlessness – no punches are pulled in a Kara Lee Corthron play! Even better: she never makes it easy to decide who is the hero – her characters are nuanced, troubled, and utterly fascinating.

LISTEN FOR THE LIGHT is no exception – forget your preconceived notions about this moment in American history and who these characters might be, because we are going to surprise you!

Bringing those characters to life are three powerhouse local actors – Darnell Pierre Benjamin as Eli, Tess Talbot as Lula, and Josh Katawick as Joseph Smith.

But LISTEN FOR THE LIGHT’s demanding script asks them to dig much deeper than just one role – each actor also plays a collection of additional characters, bending gender, age, class, and race through movement and vocal characterizations to bring the world of Nauvoo to life.

Fans of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will recognize Darnell, Tess, and Josh as beloved Company Members, and both Darnell and Tess took critically acclaimed turns at Ensemble Theatre this season, as well (Legend of Georgia McBride, When We Were Young and Unafraid). Their combined chemistry and nuanced performances are a perfect match for Kara Lee Corthron’s challenging and fascinating text.

Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford selected this world premiere to close our 19th MainStage season because:

This play is the perfect way to cap our “Once Upon A Time” season. It examines the stories that we tell ourselves and the stories in our history books, the stories that charismatic leaders tell in service of their visions. It is important, it is timely, and it’s the kind of play that takes your breath away. I’m honored that we’re the first theatre to bring it to life.

Join us April 21 – May 13 and discover a little-known and bloody moment of American history, where faith and freedom collide.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Announces the 2017 PROJECT38 Festival Featuring 38+ Student Shakespeare Events, Workshops, and Performances – now with Shakespeare’s Globe!

CSC_PROJECT38 Best 5Join Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and thousands of students for a week of 38+ free arts events in downtown Cincinnati!

CINCINNATI, OH, March 30, 2017 –  Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is pleased to continue their groundbreaking arts education initiative titled PROJECT38 with the public FREE PROJECT38 Festival!  CSC teaching artists have spent over 250 hours this school year working with over 1,600 students at more than 45 different schools to bring each of Shakespeare’s 38 plays to life in creative ways.  On April 20-23, 2017 all of the Cincinnati community will get to experience these amazing performances at a weekend-long free festival in downtown Cincinnati!  Running from Thursday, April 20 and concluding on Sunday April 23 (Shakespeare’s birthday), Memorial Hall will be full of 45 hours of free arts events for the entire community! Additional free Performances and Workshops will occur in Washington Park on Sunday April 23, in celebration of the Bard’s birthday. Last year, the PROJECT38 Festival drew over 5,000 people to OTR.

Student Performances will run in blocks from 9:00am-5:30pm and present Shakespeare through every medium imaginable: dance, computer animation, snap chats, dramatic adaptations, visual art, puppet shows, and much more! These performances will give students the chance to perform in Memorial Hall’s newly renovated theater. Director of Creative Education and PROJECT38 Artistic Director, Jeremy Dubin said “This year we are working with more schools than ever before, well beyond the 38 we originally envisioned (we’d change the name of the project, but, you know, we already had the t-shirts). We are seeing a wider variety of mediums than ever before, from traditional performance, to music, to dance, to visual art and make-up design (on display in the PROJECT38 Gallery), to a feature-length Shakespeare film!”.  All performance are free and opens to the public.

GLOBE Workshops and Performances: Mr. Dubin continues to say “most exciting of all, PROJECT38 has gone international. While we unhesitatingly aver that our Teaching Artists are the best in the city, we would never be so presumptuous as to claim they’re the best in the world. So we’ve brought in the best in the world. CSC has partnered with none other than Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. The Globe was incredibly excited when they learned about PROJECT38, and this past fall sent out two of their practitioners to run a series of workshops for our P38 Teachers and Teaching Artists, equipping them with knowledge, insight and exercises to take with them into the classroom throughout the year.  The experience was simply too amazing not to share, and so during this year’s festival we will have two more Globe practitioners in residence, running workshops for students, teachers, and even interested members of the public. Exciting, right? But wait, there’s more! One of the practitioners is also an official Globe Storyteller, and throughout the festival will be giving Storytelling performances of some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.”

Cincinnati Music Theatre Brings SHREK The Musical to the Aronoff

CMT_Shrek the Musical logoCINCINNATI, OH – Downtown’s community theatre, Cincinnati Music Theatre (CMT), invites you to join them as they proudly present SHREK THE MUSICAL, running May 12th through May 20th , at the Aronoff Center for the Arts’ intimate Jarson-Kaplan Theater (see full performance schedule below).

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears.

“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

The cast features Joey Schnell in the title role of Shrek, with Katelyn Reid as Princess Fiona, Matt Santeler as Donkey, Brett Parr as Lord Farquaad, and Brad Baldwin as Pinocchio. The extensive ensemble of fairytale characters includes Clayton Abbott, Christian Arias, Kevin Bell, Natasha Boeckmann, Adrianna Boris, Megan Carlson, Brooke Chamberlin, Anna Dudley, Donny Elkins, Laurel Ellis, Karen Galliers, Cody Hendershot, Lukas Hummeldorf, Chuck Ingram, Liz Koch, Jay Louden, Katie McCarthy, Benny Mitchell, Erin Russell, Kristen Schisler, Beth Schnell, McLean Strickland, Lori Valentine, Jack Williams, Megan Williams, and Aubrey Wilson.

SHREK THE MUSICAL is directed by Lizanne Ingram and produced by Kathy Beiting and Chad DeMatteis. Jerry Wiesenhahn choreographs our fairytale, with Karen Galliers stepping in for tap choreography.
