Mason Community Players Advances to the Finals of ‘Brackets for Good’

MCP_logoTuesday night, the Mason Community Players advanced to the fifth and final round of Brackets for Good, a non-profit fundraising competition. This is MCP’s first time participating in the event, which will award $10,000 to the final winner.

In the last four weeks, MCP has raised nearly $10,000 from existing members, new and old patrons, friends and family, as well as their corporate sponsor, Joseph Autogroup, and are now the only remaining theatrical organization.

“It’s pretty amazing,” says Peyton Hahn, Vice President of the group, “in four weeks we’ve raised nearly the amount of money in cash donations that we did in all of 2017. And for a smaller group like ours to make it this far is unbelievable. It really speaks to the dedication of our members, our patrons, and our sponsor to make something like this happen.”

But it all comes down to 8:00 PM Friday night, April 6th. That’s the deadline for donations for the final round, and a champion will be crowned. Of course, there are no losers in Brackets for Good – all organizations keep their donations regardless of whether they win or lose the round.

The Mason Community Players would be extremely appreciative of any and all support from the Cincinnati theatre community.

Know Theatre is Proud to Present a Reading of NATURAL SHOCKS

April 21, 2018

A national campaign of theater activism against gun violence

Part confessional, part stand up, part reckoning

Know Theatre is proud to present a reading of Natural Shocks by Lauren Gunderson, a relevant and  raw story that tells of a tornado, a chatty woman, and a dark secret.

The weekend of April 20, 2018 — the 19th anniversary of Columbine and the day of the National School Walkout — Know Theatre along with theatres across the nation will be using the reading of Gunderson’s new work as theater activism that serves to amplify the voices of those brave children saying “never again.”

As a junior in high school when Columbine happened, Lauren Gunderson was immediately activated. At 17, her efforts through writing and organizing mirrors the efforts of those left in the wake of the Parkland school shooting. Her new play Natural Shocks is a response to the gun violence of nineteen years ago, and the violence of today.

Based on Hamlet’s “To be or not to be,” soliloquy, Natural Shocks is a new 65-minute, tour-de-force play that bursts to life when we meet a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. She overflows with life, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns in America in your very lap. The play is part confessional, part stand up, and part reckoning.

House opens Saturday April 21st at 2pm, with live music, snacks, specialty cocktails at our bar, and information from representatives from local groups working for women’s rights. The reading will begin at 3pm. Join the Know Theatre, as well as a cast of all-stars including Miranda McGee*, Burgess Byrd*, Lormarev Jones, Maggie Lou Rader*, Lisa DeRoberts, and Regina Pugh* as we attempt to embody the everywoman, and every town. The staged reading is directed by Alice Flanders.

In addition, join the cast, director, and local activists from Women Helping Women for an interactive talkback following the performance.

All tickets are pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $12. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted at the door. All proceeds to benefit Women Helping Women, a local group working to prevent gender-based violence and to empower all survivors.

Know Theatre is Cincinnati’s Theatrical Playground. The Know showcases unexpected voices, new works, and plays that embrace the inherent theatricality of the live experience. New Edgecliff Theatre Closes Its 20th Season With A LIFE IN THE THEATRE

NETMany of us have been in the position of the promising young actor. And at that time, we more than probably had our own opinions about the actor who had been around the block more than once. But aging in the theatre changes one’s perspective, doesn’t it? As director and former New Edgecliff Theatre Artistic Director Elizabeth Harris shares: “I relate to everything in this script. As a theatre artist and as a human being it’s hard not to.”

David Mamet’s A Life In Theatre, which serves as the finale of NET’s 20th season, explores many issues we find mirrored from the world of performance to our everyday lives. Although dealing with very real challenges in theatre, the entire shows serves as a metaphor for lessons we can all learn, stage artist or not. Perhaps it is because this is referred to as one of Mamet’s “gentlest” plays (and if you know Mamet, you’ll know this to be almost indisputable), but Harris feels this show’s message is timeless. “This play is absolutely still relevant,” Harris states. “Some critics have said that the types of plays performed by the characters…are not the types of pieces you see on the contemporary stage…however the message, the theme, and experiences of these characters as they live a life in the theatre are still true today.”

A Life In Theatre lets us into the world of the changing relationship between John and Robert, two actors working together in a repertory company. John is our novice: hanging on Robert’s every word as he acknowledges he has a lot to learn. In turn, Robert, our veteran actor, feels he has a great deal to teach the younger lad as they work together in a series of shows. As time goes on, however, the chemistry between them changes. “The heart of the message of A Life in the Theatre is that theatre is life,” Harris reminds us. “We as theatre artists are speaking the language of the human condition. We celebrate life every time we have the privilege to walk the boards. It is a service, a[n] honor, a passion.”

New Edgecliff’s production of A Life In Theatre features the acting talent of Michael Shooner and Aaron Epstein. Shooner, who founded NET and served as Executive Director for its first 17 years, is a busy man around town. He is a long-standing member of Actors’ Equity and has been seen performing with other notable theatres in the area including Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Clifton Players, and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. With his beloved NET, he was seen in Mamet’s American Buffalo (also directed by Harris) and in the regional premiere of St. Nicholas, a show Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati has announced it will be taking on during their 2018-2019 season.

Epstein is no slouch, either: he is a past student of Harris’ from the Certificate Acting Program at CCM Preparatory Department and played Caliban in the Thomas More Shakespeare in the Park’s production of The Tempest last summer. He has also been seen in an area production of All My Sons and NET’s own Soldier’s Christmas.

Performances begin promptly at 7:30pm at Hoffner Lodge, located at 4120 Hamilton Avenue in beautiful Northside. Show dates are April 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, and 28. Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $15 for students with ID. This show also features a special $10 ticket price for high school students at the Friday, April 13th performance and Industry Night on Sunday April 22nd (with a $15 ticket price for industry folk). CBC: Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Explores ‘What’s Next’ with 2018-2019 Season

A version of this article was originally published March 30, 2018

ETC_D Lynn Meyers

D. Lynn Meyers, Artistic Director.

Each year, Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers asks her season subscribers to take a leap of faith and renew their subscriptions prior to the season announcement. The reason: Meyers’ dogged pursuit of regional and world premieres that can delay the announcement until the 11th hour. She jokes, “The ink isn’t even dry on some of these contracts. They are confirmed, but the paperwork is in the mail.” She must be doing something right as 80% of this season’s record high 2,655 subscribers have already renewed their subscriptions prior to this announcement.

“I only go after plays if I care deeply about the value,” confides Meyers. When possible, she uses ETC’s long history with so many writers to approach the playwrights themselves. “Being able to go directly to a writer and tell them how much you loved the script is always my first line if I can.” ETC also enjoys good relationships with theatrical publishing and licensing houses Dramatists Play Service and Samuel French, Inc. “They know us, they know our work, and they know the number of seats we’re selling.”

Each year Meyers chooses a unifying theme for the season. For 2018-2019, Meyers wanted scripts that “talk about people being placed in difficult moments in their lives and how they determine ‘what’s next,’ coming off an accomplishment or a disappointment.” This is exactly the position ETC finds itself in today, “because we’re not talking about building the building anymore. We did that. It’s pretty cool…but where do we go?”

Meyers is referring to the October 2017 completion of the $6M expansion and renovation of ETC’s Vine Street home. The theatre proper boasts new and larger seats, additional hand rails, and a new elevator which also allows access to seating from the top of the audience. Patrons can now enjoy an expanded, spacious lobby; a new bar and lounge area; and additional restrooms. Other changes include larger administrative offices and the addition of a spacious rehearsal hall.

The 33rd season opens with “Fly By Night,” a darkly comic rock-fable musical. This ode to young love is set during the Northeast blackout of 1965. A gypsy prophecy propels a melancholy sandwich-maker and two bewitching sisters through a star-crossed journey of love and connection. Winner of the 2011 Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award and nominated for four Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical, performances of “Night” run Sept. 1-29.

Deb G. Girdler as The Queen of Hearts in ETC’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

For their annual holiday, family-friendly musical, “Alice in Wonderland” returns Nov. 29-Dec. 30. From the local creative team of Joseph McDonough and David Kisor, join Alice and her bubbly friends for an unforgettable tea party. This production features an updated score from Kisor and exuberant, colorful costumes.

In “Ripcord,” a sunny room on an upper floor of the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility becomes the battleground in a dangerous game of one-upmanship between two tenacious golden girls. When cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with happy-go-lucky Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. This wickedly funny and deliciously inappropriate comedy by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire runs Jan. 19-Feb. 16.

March brings the regional premiere of the wildly inventive American comedy “A Doll’s House, Part 2” to Cincinnati. Nominated for eight Tony awards, including Best Play, this unauthorized sequel to Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking classic takes place 15 years after iconic heroine Nora famously slammed the door on her marriage, leaving her husband and children behind. In “Part 2,” Nora returns a changed woman with an incredibly awkward favor to ask of the family she abandoned.

Meyers describes “Skeleton Crew” as “one of the best plays I’ve read in ten years.” Penned by acclaimed, rising star playwright Dominique Morisseau, the funny, tough and tender American drama follows a tight knit group of employees facing the realities of big business bureaucracy in one of Detroit’s last-standing auto plants during the 2008 Great Recession. Morisseau’s “Detroit ’67” was part of ETC’s 2014-2015 season. “Skeleton Crew” runs April 13-May 11.

The season concludes with the regional premiere of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize finalist, “The Wolves.” The widely-acclaimed firecracker of a debut by writer Sarah DeLappe takes the stage from June 1-29. With their undefeated winter season on the line, this pack of elite teenage female athletes are battling their way to the national indoor soccer championships. As the final game of the season approaches, will pressures on—or off—the field prevent the team from reaching their goal? Meyers calls the work “very real, brutally honest, and fiercely contemporary.”

As a bonus to the season, ETC is offering a two week limited run of “St. Nicholas” by Conor McPherson. A jaded theatre critic spins a tale beginning with obsession and ending with a descent into a macabre world of vampires. Is it all a drunken lie? A tantalizing fairy tale? Or is it his own version of a higher truth? This one-man show welcomes back audience favorite Bruce Cromer. “We didn’t get to have [Bruce] on our stage this year due to scheduling conflicts and I didn’t want another year to go by without him.” A perfect fit for Halloween, the show runs Oct. 12-28.

Subscriptions for the 2018-2019 season are now on sale. Individual tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, July 30th at 10 a.m. For more information visit www.ensemblecincinnati.org or call the Box Office at 513.421.3555.
