CCM Acting Students Devise New Work for International Fringe Festival

CCM_H2O promo

H2O: A Play about Water will debut in Cincinnati on April 19, 2018, as part of CCM Acting’s Studio Series. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, April 16 through the CCM Box Office.

CCM students have devised a new work to be presented this summer at Scotland’s Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. Before the production travels overseas, H2O: A Play about Water will premiere in Cincinnati as the final installment of CCM’s 2017-18 Studio Series on April 19-21 in Cohen Family Studio Theater.

The play is an original 60-minute piece of theatre that was created by 30 students from the Acting, Musical Theatre and Technical Production Departments at CCM. Admission to the CCM performances is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, April 16 through the CCM Box Office.

CCM Acting Department Chair Richard Hess conceived the show and directed the students as they crafted the new work. The play is a theatrical collage of scenes that explore the abundance, scarcity and restorative powers of water.

“Water is life,” Hess says. “Seventy-one percent of our planet is water. Oceans rise. Droughts kill. Water soothes and water heals. H2O is an epic theatrical journey. Are you thirsty? Come have a drink of H2O.”

Faculty and students will travel to Scotland to present H2O: A Play about Water in four performances at the 71st Edinburgh International Fringe Festival on August 4-8, 2018. This is the first time CCM Acting students have presented an original work in the most prestigious Fringe Festival in the world.

“Some dreams can last 37 years, and when they come true, they are more vivid and more magical than expected,” says Hess about this opportunity. “In 1981 when I was a junior in college, I traveled to Scotland for a study abroad experience and stayed for the year studying drama and English at the University of Glasgow. I have dreamed of taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since I first set foot in Scotland 37 years ago. Taking 30 CCM students to Scotland is a dream come true.”

You can see the Cincinnati premiere of H2O: A Play about Water in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater from April 19-21. Visit CCM’s guide to Studio Series tickets for tips and tricks to secure your seats.

Know Theatre Invites You to Summon Your Courage for Season 21: FEAR ITSELF

KTC_logoFear manifests itself in many ways: the monsters around us, monsters inside of us, in
the darkness on the periphery of our vision, in difficult truths, in confessions, in honesty,
in deceit, in times of change.

In our 21st season, Know Theatre takes a journey through our fears: how we face them,
how they consume us, and how we conquer them.

The season features two world premieres (one a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere), two second productions, and two regional premieres. We’re presenting new works by fan favorite playwrights Joseph Zettelmaier and Steve Yockey , and introducing playwrights Reina Hardy and Darcy Parker Bruce to Cincinnati audiences.

In our MainStage season, Know maintains our commitment to gender parity in the playwrights we produce, as well as in our onstage roles and creative teams. And this season we’re taking it even further, with women filling nearly two-thirds of total onstage roles, as well. Says Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford:

“We’re so excited by the lineup for the coming season: the new voices we get to share with our community, the opportunities for collaboration with our local artists, and the way in which the themes of these shows interact with the world around us. From the fantastical to the socially aware, the simple to the epic, this season has a little bit of everything I love about live theatre.”

But an outcast forester and a strange woods-witch are crafting their own plans to claim the prize.

From the playwright of Know fan favorites Pulp and All Childish Things comes a class conscious tale of mystery, passion, and suspense…all inspired by a French legend of a werewolf.

10 words or less: There are wolves in the woods.
Rated: PG-13.

SUSAN SWAYNE AND THE BEWILDERED BRIDE by Reina Hardy
Directed by Tamara Winters

Meet Susan Swayne and the Society of Lady Detectives – aside from their interest in swordplay, they’re all perfectly proper Victorian women. Or are they? When the distraught Isabelle Fontaine-Kite insists that a member of the S.o.L.D. is actually her missing husband, Eric, Susan Swayne is on the case! Cross-dressing, double-crosses, opium and topless fencing make for a period action farce with “sass and ovaries of steel.” ( Chicago Now )

Know is thrilled to bring the work of playwright Reina Hardy to Cincinnati with this swashbuckling adventure story that explores questions of identity and ambition within the social constraints of Victorian society.

10 words or less: Mary Poppins meets the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

No one’s happy, people stop being nice, and blood spills. This mash-up of myth, missing empathy, and “good neighbors” explores what happens when the mercury rises.

INTO THE WOODS at Anderson Theatre a Modernized Fairy Tale

AHS_Into the Woods Promo 1

Actors in Anderson Theatre’s INTO THE WOODS include Junior Alexis Zoglio as Little Red Ridinghood, Senior Micah Queen as the Wolf, Junior Adam Radcliffe as the Baker, Senior Delaney O’Toole as the Baker’s Wife, Junior Mackenzie Greulach as Cinderella, seated), Senior Audrey Button as the Witch and Sophomore Nate Goodlett as Jack. Performances are May 4 and 5 at 7:00 pm and May 6 at 2:00 pm at Anderson High School. Photo by Jennifer Alessandrini.

On May 4, 5, and 6, Anderson High School students will present their 55th Spring Musical, INTO THE WOODS by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. Tickets are $10 and purchase information can be found on their website, www.AndersonTheatre.com.

INTO THE WOODS won the Tony Award in 1987 for Best Musical, and while it centers around familiar fairy tale characters like Cinderella and Little Red Ridinghood, their stories go beyond the traditional “happily ever after.”

“These characters are more human,” explains Director Chad Weddle. “Every one of us has flaws, and these characters do, too. We all make mistakes; we all want things—sometimes desperately—that are not good for us.”

Junior Mackenzie Greulach, who plays Cinderella, describes her character as “a young girl who struggles with making choices about what she wants in her life.” The story feels modern to Mackenzie because, she says, “While it does show the original fairy tale characters that everyone knows, it also explores the more realistic side of life.”

“A single mom, in poverty, trying to manage her dreamer of a son,” is how Junior Jadyn Riggs describer her character, Jack’s Mother. “We live a mess of a home, with no adult male figure. I am forced to take care of everything, provide everything.” The character is is far from the perfect mother, according to Jadyn, although she loves her son. “Unlike other characters, I don’t express my love as well as I should, because it comes from a deeper place of fear.”

“Love is a huge part of this show,” says Junior Adam Radcliffe, who plays the Baker. “Every character loves something or someone, and the only catch is, who and why. As the Baker, I get to move through scenes where my character experiences love for his wife, and his baby. He is a loving husband who faces challenges he never thought he would have to face.”

Weddle hopes audiences will recognize themselves in these characters. “The show is about all the different kinds of love we experience: romantic love, married love, parental love, but also selfish and jealous love. INTO THE WOODS uses fairy tales to explore what happens when we get exactly what we thought we wanted.” He points out that “The phrase ‘I wish’ is the most crucial line in the show. We have to think about how hard we are willing to work for what we want, and whether it is worthy. Is it selfish? Does it build our community, or destroy it?”

Senior Katie Hehn plays Cinderella’s Stepmother, who she says “is very evil and selfish! She experiences more emotions in this show than in the traditional fairy tale, and is thrown into scenes, like the one involving the Giant, which she is definitely not equipped to handle.” Hehn is facing new experiences along with her character; known for her technical leadership among the crew, this is her first on-stage role in two years. The preparation is challenging, but clearly she enjoys it. “If I had one wish, I would wish for endless opportunities to try new things!”

“With every show, I always wish that our audience has an experience that will change their life.” says Riggs. “I am excited about it all, and only wish that the story we put on stage touches someone in the audience.”

Radcliffe agrees. “People should come see this show because it is awesome. It incorporates so many different things for all different ages. And the music is Sondheim, so who would want to miss it?”
