The Human Race continues its 32nd Season with A. R. Gurney’s Sylvia, April. 25 – May 12, 2019 at the Loft Theatre

“Sylvia was first produced by The Human Race in our 10th season,” said Artistic Director Kevin Moore.  “And it has now been four years since the Broadway production.  And what is clear is our relationship with our pets does not change.  It is a commitment that we take very seriously.  And is why we can find so much humor in it still.”

(Dayton, OH) —Middle-aged Greg brings home a dog he found–or rather, one that found him–in the park. With no other identification other than “Sylvia” on her nametag, she’s a street-smart mutt with a mind of her own and no shortage of opinions. Sylvia quickly becomes a major bone of contention between Greg and his wife, Kate. To him, she’s a welcome escape from an unhappy job and a loss of purpose. To Kate, Sylvia’s a slobbering, hairy rival for her husband’s affection. This ingenious take on a twisted love triangle leads to plenty of laughs and revelations on love and marriage… and a dog.

Sylvia is rated PG-15. Parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 15.

Sylvia will be Marya Spring Cordes’ (Director) 4th show she has directed at HRTC. Marya’slast show at the Loft was Neil Simon’s semi-biographical comedy, Brighton Beach Memoirs.

KSO BOURBON BARREL BALL April 27th

KSO_Bourbon Barrel Ball logoBourbon and the KSO — a match made in Newport

Linking savory Kentucky spirits with tasty nostalgic music has become an anticipated event at the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s 2nd Annual Bourbon Barrel Ball — 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27th. The KSO’s party with a purpose marks the orchestra’s 25th fundraiser, supporting its annual free education and park concerts. This year’s event will be the first held amidst the bourbon at the New Riff West Newport warehouses, tasting & bottling facilities (which formerly housed the Greenline bus & trolley system till 1972).

The evening opens with a cocktail hour, provided by The Party Source, including delicious New Riff bourbon tastings (including the KSO’s own select single barrel), a silent auction and optional tours of the rickhouses and bottling operations. A scrumptious 3-course, duo-entree dinner by McHales follows including wine and dessert. The KSO Big/Boogie Band offers the perfect bourbon/music mix — a Rat-Pack Redux (Frank, Dean and Sammy at the New Riff) — “Come Fly With Me,” “That’s Amore,” “The Candy Man” … and a Dazzling Divas (R&B Royalty) tribute set — Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle… (see full playlists attached). Dancing, music and conviviality continue till the last pour.

Live, silent and on-line auctions feature destinations, sports and entertainment tickets, dining options and much more. The evening’s big raffle drawing features the rarest of bourbons — O.F.C. (Old Fashioned Copper) 1985 from Buffalo Trace. Only 61 bottles were retrieved from this 34-year vintage barrel. $50 per chance / up to 500 sold. In addition the KSO’s tasty select single barrel bottles (112 proof) are for sale on-line, and at the event (limited inventory).

“The KSO has always thrown great parties, but this is a 4D clam-bake!” exclaimed KSO founder James Cassidy. “Smell the angels’ share, check out the players and ring a dings, listen and dance to the Rat Pack and Divas, and taste the bourbons and fancy foods.”

Proceeds from the event keep the music playing across the region. The KSO has performed free education concerts for 239 regional schools and 138,837 students over the past 24 years. Additionally free annual summer concerts in Covington’s Devou Park have brought nearly 388,000 area residents to the iconic concert bowl in 24 summers. The Bourbon Barrel Ball provides funding to keep these vibrant, educational, engaging & entertaining opportunities available for you and your neighbors.

Can’t attend? Support the KSO’s outreach programs by buying raffle tickets or bidding on auction items on-line. Beginning on April 16th, patrons may preview and bid on auction items on-line. Bidders have the opportunity to place absentee bids if they can not attend on April 27th. (raffle tickets available on-line; winner need not be present to win).

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Announces 2019-2020 Otto M. Budig Family Foundation Season

ETC_new_logo_banner

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC), the region’s premiere theatre, is delighted to announce its 2019-2020 Season, which features a five-time Tony Award-winning musical, a raucous rom-com with a sweet sixth-sense, an urgent and gripping drama about breaking a sinister cycle, a snapshot of an unsung scientific heroine, and a close-up of a forty-year, age-defying friendship. Along with this compelling lineup, next season also features the return of ETC’s very first original holiday musical, plus a seventh (and explicit) show offering for those who are looking for some not-so-family-friendly entertainment.

“I always choose a season for Ensemble that specifically addresses the needs of our community, our neighborhood, our nation. In looking at the state of our world right now, I believe reconciliation and kindness are two elements that are needed and those themes resonate throughout each of our 2019-2020 selections. I am particularly thrilled to welcome Fun Home to our stage finally, as it’s an essential piece of theatre and sets the tone for the rest of the plays that follow in our season,” explains Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers.

“Additionally, six of the seven plays this season are coincidentally written by women. These are fierce, bold, and empowering voices that I am honored to present on our stage and which represent not only the very best in contemporary theatre, but also appeal to the breadth and depth of the universal human experience. I am equally pleased to have The Frog Princess on our stage again after a 12-year hiatus and to continue our long-standing relationship with local writing team Joe McDonough and David Kisor,” she adds.

About the Plays
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati opens its 34th year with a regional premiere hailed as one of Broadway’s most original musicals. Winner of 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Fun Home (music by Jeanine Tesori, book & lyrics by Lisa Kron, based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel) is the groundbreaking story inspired by the best-selling graphic memoir, August 31–September 28, 2019. Alison’s father, Bruce, was an enigmatic, brilliant man whose secrets defined her family and her life. Bruce taught high school English, ran the family’s funeral home business, and was obsessed with restoring their old house. When he dies unexpectedly, Alison digs deeply into her memories to explore and unravel the mysteries of her childhood and the surprising secrets that shaped her life.

With the academic year in full swing, ETC takes lousy language to school with a limited 2-week engagement, Sex and Education by Lissa Levin, October 15-26, 2019. Meet Joe Marks, a graduating basketball star whose college scholarship is suddenly in jeopardy when his poorly-written, sexually explicit note to his girlfriend is confiscated during a final exam. Meet Miss Edwards, his jaded public high school English teacher on her last day of teaching. With nothing to lose and resentment from years of disinterested students, she assigns him the task of turning the purloined letter into a polished, persuasive essay. A scintillating romp and hilarious lesson for all in life, sex, sports, and grammar, this special performance event also offers an alternative to the holiday production for subscribers or may be added on to full season subscriptions. Recommended for mature audiences.

Jumping into the holiday season, ETC revives the very first of its unique holiday musicals, The Frog Princess, with book by Joseph McDonough and music and lyrics by David Kisor, December 4–January 4, 2020. Prince Ivan’s father has declared that it is time for his sons to marry, but when Ivan discovers his bride-to-be is actually a frog, he is toad-ally disappointed. Vasilisa is more than your typical hoppy-go- lucky frog, though…she’s a kindhearted princess under a curse! When the villainous Old Bones takes Vasilisa to a far-away land, Ivan sets out to save her, discovering along his journey that love sees beyond outside appearances. With a revitalized script and score, this modern, musical spin on the famous Russian fairy tale celebrates the beauty within each of us. The Frog Princess is suitable for all ages.

For those wishing for a little luck (and even a little romance) in the new year, ETC presents the regional premiere comedy Fortune by Deborah Zoe Laufer, January 18–February 15, 2020. Maude, aka Madame Rosa, is not your average fortune teller. A true clairvoyant with a bluntness that won’t quit, she often scares her customers away with the truth of what their futures hold. However, when love-hungry accountant Jeremy stumbles into her parlor with death in his imminent future, Maude tells a little white lie triggering supernatural consequences and changing both their destinies. In hilarious rom-com style, Fortune sweetly affirms the benefits of the unpredictability of life.

Next, the work of MacArthur Fellow (aka Genius Grant recipient) Dominique Morisseau (Detroit ’67, Skeleton Crew) returns to the ETC stage. Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son, Omari, opportunities they’ll never have. But when an explosive incident at his prestigious private school threatens to get him expelled, will all her efforts be lost? A compelling, must-see portrait of parenthood, education, and the experience of young black men in America, Pipeline, March 7–April 4, 2020, brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the forefront. This is the deeply moving story of a mother’s fight to give her son a future—without turning her back on the community that made him who he is.

In the spring, ETC travels to London, 1952. Pioneering British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin’s DNA discovery leads to the Nobel Prize—not for her, but for three men: Francis Crick, James Dewey Watson, and Maurice Wilkins. Masterfully weaving the thriller-like twists and tension in the competitive chase to map the DNA molecule and based on the true story, Photograph 51 by Anna Ziegler, April 18–May 16, 2020, is a riveting and moving portrait of one of the great female scientists and the pivotal—yet often-overlooked—role she played in the biggest breakthrough of the 20th century.

ETC’s 2019-2020 Season closes with a snapshot in 20th Century Blues by Susan Miller, May 30–June 27, 2020. An impromptu behind-bars snapshot taken during a 1970s protest lockup sparks an eccentric, four-decade friendship. Every year, photographer Danny and her friends reunite to take a new photo showcasing their changing (and aging) selves. When Danny is offered a TED Talk career retrospective at MoMA, the ritual that has been the glue holding the women together for 40 years is now also what may tear them apart. The images unearth secrets and force the women to question who they are in this close-up on art, aging, and audacious friendship by two-time Obie Award winner Susan Miller.

CHICAGO to Open at Footlighters, Inc. May 9th, 2019

FLI_Chicago logoFootlighters Inc. concludes its 2018-2019 season with a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery- the classic Kander and Ebb collaboration, Chicago.

Set in the Windy City during the roaring 20’s, it’s a tale of two scintillating sinners: the sensational murderess and reigning queen of the Cook County jail, Velma Kelly, and the newest of the merry murderesses, the good time party girl Roxie Hart. Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and smooth-talking defense attorney Billy Flynn who both help turn Velma’s incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for her splashy showbiz comeback. But every time Velma comes up with a new trick, Roxie is there to take the idea as her own. Chicago is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal” and has unforgettable song and dance numbers such as “All That Jazz”, “Mr. Cellophane”, “Razzle Dazzle”, and “Cell Block Tango”.

Chicago marks director Bill Geraghty’s third time at the directorial helm at Footlighters, having previously directed the acclaimed SideShow and the wildly successful Jesus Christ Superstar. Other directing credits include Stephen Sondheim’s Company at Cincinnati Music Theatre and Songs for A New World and tick, tick, BOOM! for Showbiz Players.

The Drama Workshop Closes Season with WORKING

TDW_Working promo

Garrett Liette, Cathy Judge, Mitch Ruth, Jazz McMullen, Liz Taylor and Kevin Noll play a variety of roles in The Drama Workshop’s upcoming production of WORKING, based on the book by Studs Turkel. Photo by Kristy Rucker.

The Drama Workshop concludes another great year of theatre in its home in the Cheviot business district with the classic musical WORKING from May 3rd through May 19th. Performances are at The Glenmore Playhouse, 3716 Glenmore Ave, Cheviot.

WORKING by Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, is based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with the American workforce. It is a loving portrait of the American workday told from the perspective of those that the world so often overlooks – the schoolteacher, the housewife, the fireman and the waitress amongst many – whose life and aspirations reflect the diversity that is America. It includes a wide range of musical styles, including contributions from five-time Grammy Award winner James Taylor and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Director Amy Waldfogle has wanted to do this show for years, and is grateful for the chance to stage it at TDW. “I love that the lyrics and the text of the monologues are all taken from real words that real people said about themselves and their job,” she explained.  “There’s a rawness and honesty that permeates every single line because it’s all real, not an author trying to present a realistic portrayal.”

Actor Clare Hingsbergen agreed. “This show does a great job at sharing stories of real people and I think people like coming to the theatre and feeling connected with the piece they are seeing. I think everyone can connect with something in this show.”

WORKING is Elizabeth Taylor’s first time performing with TDW, and says she’s enjoyed working with the diverse group of actors who bring the show to life. “These are amazing and talented people. The characters, their everyday jobs and dreams are so relatable. Anyone can find a shared experience with at least one of the characters,” she said.

WORKING is directed and choreographed by Amy Waldfogle and produced by Mark Waldfogle, with musical direction by Allen Lindsey. The rest of the creative team includes Whitney Ball, Amanda Borchers, Elaine Volker, Eric Bardes, Greg Schaper, Jason Cox, Ray Persing, and Valeria Amburgey. The cast consists of veterans from around Cincinnati: Clare Hingsbergen, Kyndra Jefferies, Cathy Judge, Garret Liette, Jazzmann McMullen, Harold Murphy, Kevin Noll, Catherine Ross, Mitch Ruth, Helen Swartwout, Jim Swartwout, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Tickets to WORKING are $18 each if ordered in advance, or $20 the day of the show. Show dates and times are May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 8 pm, May 5, 11, and 19 at 2 pm, and May 16 at 7:30 pm. Shows frequently sell out, and reservations are strongly recommended. Tickets can be ordered through The Drama Workshop’s ticket line at 513.598.8303, or ordered online via the TDW website at www.thedramaworkshop.org.
