Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by charming wealthy women out of their money. Freddy Benson swindles much humbler amounts from sympathetic women with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. After a chance meeting on a train, they attempt to work together—only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: The first one to extract $50,000 from heiress Christine Colgate wins, and the other must leave town. But who’s really conning who?

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

DIRECTOR’S VISION: NO BOUNDARIES

A triple bill of emotion concludes the 2024-2025 Season at the Aronoff Center, featuring works from choreographers Alexander Ekman, and David Morse, and a regional premiere from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.

Ekman’s Cacti is a playful and witty parody of contemporary dance. The work is an affectionate, pointed, and often hilarious deconstruction of the affectations of dance.

Both intimate and cinematic, Morse’s Our Story looks at the unique singularity of history’s darkest chapter – the Holocaust – and asks profound questions about what is required of each of us to appreciate our shared humanity.

The program is capped with Delmira, a regional premiere from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The dramatic work was inspired by the life of 20th-century Latin American poet Delmira Agustini, one of the first female poets of the modern era. Ochoa tells her story using the symbolism that Agustini employed in her writing.

Ahoy there, mateys!  Shiver me timbers and all hands on deck!  Granny and her scallywags are on a hunt to find a buried treasure.  Long ago, someone was plundered without their knowledge and was forced to live on a pirate ship.  Granny will need to figure out the combination to Davy Jones’s locker and create a mutiny.  Who will be forced to walk the plank?  Batten down the hatches!  Soon there will be a celebration with a yo ho ho bottle of rum. Includes meal. Rated PG-13.

The play follows the story of the feisty orphan, Anne Shirely. Adopted from an orphanage in Nova Scotia by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, Anne Shirely’s acclimation to life in Avonlea isn’t exactly smooth sailing. The Cuthbert siblings wanted a quiet boy to help out around their farm, but instead they recieve Anne, a redheaded, freckle-faced, free spirit who turns their lives upside down with her quirky behaviour. Follow Anne as she navigates school, friendship, and life in Avonlea through this charming coming-of-age tale.
