Bowman and Yarborough
Portland, OH

Written & performed by Sadie Bowman & Donna Kay Yarborough

Last fringe, they sang their way into our…hearts with The Famous Haydell Sisters Comeback Tour. This year they are making a comeback as Frank and Dino.

The Rat Pack is back! Those hip swingers who epitomized mid-century male swagger live on–and face their own music. Forced to broaden their horizons in the bodies of a couple of broads, Frank and Dino ring-a-ding-ding away their time in purgatory examining timeless gender issues via classic songs with new opinions. CTM_logoThe Children’s Theatre of Mason is proud to present SOUTH PACIFIC, June 17-19 in Mason. SOUTH PACIFIC is set in an island paradise during World War II, where two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war.

The show will run for four performances – Friday, June 17 at 7:00pm; Saturday, June 18th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm; and Sunday, June 19th at 2:00pm. James Michener, a book editor and university professor, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1942. In April 1944, he was sent to the South Pacific theatre where he was assigned to write a history of the Navy in the Pacific, which allowed him to travel widely. From his travels, which took him to a village named Bali-ha’i and also led him to meet a woman named Bloody Mary, he wrote a collection of stories titled Tales of the South Pacific for which he won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. These stories were the basis for the musical SOUTH PACIFIC, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.  The original Broadway production premiered in 1949 and was a huge success running for 1,925 performances.  It won ten Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score.  The original cast album was also the best selling record of the 1940s.  In 2008, SOUTH PACIFIC, enjoyed a successful musical revival, running for 996 performances and winning seven Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival.

Set during World War II on an island in the South Pacific, Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he’s fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie.  Both Nellie and Joe find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural prejudices with their feelings of love, all the while under the dark cloud of a war that is coming ever closer to their island paradise.

The Children’s Theatre of Mason is proud to welcome Veterans to SOUTH PACIFIC!  Veterans from WWII and the Korean War or Veterans over the age of 65 will be able to enter a raffle for the Tri-State Honor Flight.  Honor Flight is free for Veterans and CTM will pay for a guardian to escort the Veteran on the Honor Flight (a $450 value).  Tri-State Honor Flight must approve the Veteran and the guardian after an application has been submitted.

A Day in the Garden on June 11

A Day in the Garden with Plants and Predators at the Arts Center at Dunham

MISC_Arts Center At Dunham logoCINCINNATI, OH – May 27, 2016 — The Arts Center at Dunham (ACAD) is hosting a Day in the Garden with Plants and Predators on Saturday, June 11 from 10 am until 4pm.

At this free event, gardeners young and old can swap plants, bulbs and seeds from flowers, vegetables, fruits and trees with other local gardeners and pick up new plants for their gardens. Swap participants should bring their plants in a container (pot or bags). The plants should be labelled with as much information, such as light and water requirement, height, spread, color, bloom time, and picture of bloom or mature plant. Plants will be grouped by light requirement.

The swap will begin at 10 am for those who have brought plants to swap. Those interested in starting a garden can come at 11 am to select any remaining plants, bulbs or seeds. Volunteers will be on hand to help place plants and answer as many questions as they can. This is a great way to get a garden started for free.

From 12 noon-2pm, gardeners can attend education presentations. These sessions include “Safe Deterrents for Unwelcome Garden Visitors” and “Attracting Desired Garden Guests.”

The ACAD FREE Family Fun Summer Series kicks off at 1 pm with crafts, snacks and special musical activities. At 2 pm, Raptors, Inc. will feature “Beaks and Talons” with three live avian ambassadors that families can see up close and personal.

For more information, visit www.sunsetplayers.org or call 513-588-4988.

The Arts Center at Dunham is a fine arts center for the west side of Cincinnati. Auditions for PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE at Lebanon Theatre Company

LTC_logoWe are holding auditions for our summer production, Steve Martin’s PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE, on May 27 at 6pm and May 28th at 2pm. Auditions will consist of cold reads of selections from the script. No special preparation required. We are particularly interested in casting performers ages 16-25. LTC prides itself on making auditions a fun, inclusive, and non-intimidating process for all involved.

PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE is the first in LTC’s annual Summer Theatre series, designed to provide performance opportunities to our area’s young adult performers ages 16-25. We hope to showcase some of the best young talent from around the region while giving students the chance to develop their theatrical skills and perform for the broader community.

The production will be directed by Kurt Percy. Performances will be July 22-24 and 29-31 (8pm Friday and Saturday performances; 2pm Sunday performances; no dinner or brunch theatre for this production). The play is set in a bar, and therefore contains the appearance of alcohol use and some humor that may be inappropriate for young children. The production is recommended for audiences age 13 and older.

Synopsis
This long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness.

Bystanders, including Picasso’ agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso’s date, an elderly philosopher, Charles Dabernow Schmendimen, and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark haired singer time warped in from a later era.

This show is the first in LTCs annual Summer Theatre series, designed to provide performance opportunities to our area’s young adult performers ages 16-25. We hope to showcase some of the best young talent from around the region while giving students the chance to develop their theatrical skills and perform for the broader community.
