AHS Film Department Showcases Student Talent with 2 MARS

The cast of Anderson Film’s 2 MARS includes Junior Oliver Baumgartner, Junior Riley Orth, Junior Jack Chandler, Senior Adam Radcliffe, Senior Hailey Mauk, Junior Caitlin Walsh, Senior Corinne Baumann, and Senior Claudia Wright.

On April 5 and 6 at 7 pm, Anderson High School will premier a feature-length film that has been written, performed, filmed, and scored by students in the Film and Music Departments. Each showing will also feature the AHS Symphony Orchestra playing the film score live.

Chad Weddle, Film Teacher and the Director of the project, says “this level of film collaboration among students is not being done anywhere else in the country. Not even colleges are trying this at this level, so we are very much ahead of the curve.”

Anderson Theatre has seen success in the past with student-written productions (2012’s “Robin Hood: A Monk’s Tale”) and student-composed scores (2014’s “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH”), but this marks the fist time they have combined these with student Filmmakers and Musicians as well.

Senior Hailey Mauk wrote the screenplay last summer, with support from Weddle and his staff. Junior Ian Baker has spent this winter composing the musical score, supported by Dr. Eric Knechtges, recently an Associate Professor of music theory and composition at NKU.

“Ian Baker is a highly gifted and motivated student,” says AHS Orchestra Director Felipe Morales-Torres. “It was only natural to let him take the reigns for this project. Giving our students the opportunity to compose and perform for film puts them at the very edge of the evolution of orchestral music.”

“Our belief in creation and collaboration make it possible to push the boundaries of film education at the high school level,” say Weddle. “I am eager to showcase the talent of these students. Anderson township should not miss this event, because this is the future. Audience members can say that they were here when history was being made.”

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Presents RUMPELSTILTSKIN on the Showtime Stage

Remember his name!  The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) brings an exciting 45-minute performance of RUMPELSTILTSKIN presented by TCT On Tour (TCT’s touring division) to the Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage March 15-17, 2019.

​TCT retells this classic tale of the miller’s daughter, her boastful father, a handsome prince and the ability to spin straw into gold. Discover the magic and wonder of one of the world’s best loved fairytales.

The 4-person cast includes members of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Resident Artist Company:  Joey Logan, Ryan-Chavez Richmond, Brandi Langford-Sherrill and Maddie Vaughn.  The production was directed by Deondra Kamau Means.  Thematic Connections include:  Literary Classic, Reading, Folktales, Fairytales, Self-Esteem, Friendship, Kindness, Strength of Character, and Bullying. 

RUMPELSTILTSKIN is most enjoyed by those in grades PreK-5 and will be presented on the Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage, 4015 Red Bank Road, Cincinnati, OH  45227.  Only 152 seats are available for each performance.  A question-and-answer session follows every show.

  • Saturday, March 16 at 11 AM and 2 PM

New Music Ensemble Celebrates Imagery and Artistry at NKU SOTA

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts welcomes new music ensemble Zohn Collective on March 20, who will be performing an evening of modern piano trios in collaboration with videographer José Camacho and famed, Mexican cartoonist, José Ignacio Solórzano (a.k.a. “Jis”).

All works on the program relate to the idea of music as a powerful gateway to memory. Audience members may recognize the Ives Trio, which is flecked with numerous quotations of American folk and popular music. Ives evokes memories from his own personal life as well as memories from the collective American consciousness. Other works on the program were written by Daniel Pesca and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, both members of Zohn Collective, and also deal with the idea of music and memory.

“The performance will stimulate audiences to respond more creatively to contemporary and 20th-century chamber music while creating an experience to reflect on the relationship between music, imagery, and memory,” said Hanna Hurwitz, co-director of Zohn Collective and lecturer of violin at NKU SOTA. “The information about the works will be integrated as an artistic, rather than descriptive, component of the event. The intention is to refract that information through a combination of visual and auditory means that gives space for individualized reflection and fluid interpretation.”

Founded in 2017, Zohn Collective is a contemporary music collective, which seeks to produce and perform artist-driven projects generated by its members. For this reason, the diversity of backgrounds, interests, and expertise of each member is an essential and vibrant element of the group’s model. The ensemble core is comprised of nine members, which includes instrumental performers, composers, and a conductor, however, the group may expand or contract as dictated by the repertory of each project. The group recently performed with internationally recognized puppet company, La Coperacha, at the Festival de Mayo in Guadalajara, Mexico, and has given performances and workshops at the University of Kentucky, Belmont University, Oberlin Conservatory, Notre Dame, and University of Chicago.

“Jis” José Ignacio Solórzano is a renowned cartoonist, conceptual artist, and radio personality born in 1963 in Guadalajara, México. He has been a longstanding contributor to many of the preeminent newspapers and magazines in Mexico (La Jornada, Milenio, Galimatías, among others) and is co-author of the fabled comic strip “El Santos”. He has presented numerous exhibits of his work at noted galleries in Mexico and abroad and published several books with his drawings, comic strips, and cartoons, for including one in English, titled Cats don’t exist for Fantagraphics.

Zohn Collective will perform Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 7 p.m. in Greaves Concert Hall at NKU. Admission is free and open to the public. The Cincinnati Ballet Leaps to the Arts Center of Dunham for Free Family Fun

MISC_Arts Center At Dunham logoCINCINNATI, OH – February 18, 2019 — Courtesy of a grant from Price Hill Arts CAT and Price Hill Will, the Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham features plies and arabesques with the Cincinnati Ballet on Saturday, March 2 at 2 pm.

CB_new logoDancers from the prestigious Cincinnati Ballet will provide an exciting peek into the typical day in the life of professional dancers. Audience members will learn the fundamentals of the art of ballet and gain an understanding of the discipline and athleticism required for a professional career in ballet. A dance demonstration with audience participation and a question and answer discussion are included.

All Free Family Fun Series performances are on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. The remaining series includes:

  • April 6, 2019 ROKCincy Opera for Children: “Little Red Riding Hood”
    ROKCincy presents the fairy tale we all know and love, but with uniquely ROKCincy twists and humor. The performance is 40 minutes in length and includes a Q&A session with performers afterward. ROKCincy, Roundabout Opera for Kids: Cincinnati, is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.
  • May 18, 2019 Five Little Monkeys by Ernie Nolan, adapted from the series of books by Eileen Christelow and performed by the Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill Productions. Going shopping, baking cakes, sitting in trees and jumping on beds. Mayhem ensues in this zany plat told in cumulative verse as five silly simian siblings insist on doing things their own way. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

The Arts Center at Dunham is an arts center for the west side of Cincinnati and its vision is to provide affordable creative and performing arts for Price Hill and surrounding communities. Housed in one of the three remaining buildings of what was the first municipally owned tuberculosis sanatorium in the United States, the Arts Center includes a 350-seat performance venue as well as extensive studio and programming space. Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony | Sat., March 9 | Aronoff Center – Jarson-Kaplan Theater

CAA_Overture AwardsCINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is proud to present the 2019 Overture Awards Finals Competition. The Overture Awards provides $4,000 to six area high school students for education and training expenses, with eighteen finalists each winning $1,000. The program also provides a $2,500 Arts Educator Award for Excellence in Arts Instruction.

The Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Winners will be announced immediately following the competition.  The Visual Art finalists exhibition will be in Aronoff Center’s Center Stage Room (next to the Weston Art Gallery on Seventh Street) from Tuesday, March 5 – Saturday, March 9.

This year, 424 students were nominated by their schools or studios to compete in one of six artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. The Overture Awards was developed to recognize, encourage, and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. It also provides students an opportunity to share their talents and interests among their peers in a supportive environment outside of their individual schools. There are three levels of competition: Regional, Semi-Final, and Final.

The Overture Awards Regional Competitions were held on January 26 at the Immanuel School of Music, Northern Kentucky University, and Mount Saint Joseph University. The top twenty percent of competitors in each discipline advanced to the Semi-Finals, which were held at the Aronoff Center on February 7-9. Twenty-four finalists (four in each discipline) will compete in the Finals Competition at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater on March 9.

Now in its twenty-third year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation (now Duke Energy) and Leadership Cincinnati (a program of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber). The Overture Awards is funded and administered by the Cincinnati Arts Association, which operates and manages the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. The Overture Awards also relies on hundreds of volunteers from the community who help raise funds, adjudicate and manage the competitions, and nurture the program.

Arts Educator Award For Excellence in Arts Instruction

The Arts Educator Award promotes and rewards excellence in arts instruction throughout Greater Cincinnati. An educator who teaches any of the following arts disciplines may be nominated: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. They can be a high school arts specialist, a teaching artist working with high school students, or an arts professional or educator providing private lessons or instruction. Nominations for the award must come from students between the ages of 14-19 who are currently enrolled in high school. Nominations are made by submitting an on-line application with a three-minute video about why the nominee is an exemplary arts educator.

The winner of the 2019 award will receive $2,500, and two finalists will receive $500 each. The recipients of the Arts Educator Award may utilize the monetary award to strengthen their program or practice, e.g. an artist fee for a guest lecturer or master class, the purchase of equipment, or a professional learning opportunity such as tuition assistance for either the educator or for students to study with the recipient or another professional.
