Open House Event for All School Theater on March 5

AC_All School Theatre Open House

Many schools across Hamilton County have reduced or lost their theater programs due to budget cuts. To support schools and students, ArtsConnect, a non-profit arts organization of Springfield Township, has partnered with Dramakinetics and Mt Healthy School District with funding from The Ohio Arts Council to bring an All School Community Theater Program to our region. This program gives a unique opportunity to area students.

Students between the ages of 10-17 from any school can have the opportunity to be a part of a live community theater production. ArtsConnect and Dramakinetics will kick off this exciting project with an All School Theater Open House event on Thursday, March 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the Mt Healthy High School cafeteria. (Please enter through the main door and arrive no later than 6:30 p.m.)

The Open House will be an opportunity for students to learn more about the project, auditions and schedule. Students will have a pizza dinner provided and will quickly get to know one another through fun improv theater games. Unique to this project, the students will actually choose the show they want to be a part of at the Theater Open House event. There will be three choices and the opportunity to vote via secret ballot. The final show selection will be revealed at the Open House.

AFTER THE OPEN HOUSE
Auditions for the selected show will be held Sunday, April 5th beginning at 1:30 p.m. and Tuesday, April 7th, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Mt Healthy Jr/Sr High School auditorium. (Dates subject to change. Please see www.theartsconnect.us to confirm the audition schedule.)

Rehearsals will run twice a week in the evenings, May 18 – June 5th. Once school is out for the summer, rehearsals will run three days a week, 9-11 a.m. Three performances will be held at the Mt Healthy Theater, June 26th and 27th.

Cast fees will be $100 per student and crew fees will be $50 per student. Students are not required to participate in the Open House Event to be in the show, however are highly encouraged to do so. A limited number of scholarships are available to students who demonstrate a financial need. Scholarship applications are due no later than May 18th. Each scholarship approved covers 50% of the cost. Cincinnati Ballet Presents Triple Bill of Modern Dance Drama for DIRECTOR’S CUT April 30-May 2 at Aronoff Center

Cincinnati Ballet presents Director’s Cut April 30-May 2 at Aronoff Center. Audiences will experience raw, visceral contemporary dance in a triple bill of works by Cincinnati Ballet Artistic Director Victoria Morgan and internationally renowned choreographers, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Val Caniparoli. This powerful triple bill is performed alongside Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Victoria Morgan’s unique take on Maurice Ravel’s iconic composition, Boléro, is joined by Val Caniparoli’s Ibsen’s HouseThe tour de force ballet addresses Victorian repression of women through five female characters from plays by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa brings Bloom, an emotional piece inspired by a Balinese flower ritual, set to composer Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto. Challenge your way of thinking with this season’s Director’s Cut.

2020 OVERTURE AWARDS FINALS COMPETITION AND AWARDS CEREMONY | Sat., March 7 | Aronoff Center

CINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is proud to present the 2020 Overture Awards Finals Competition. The Overture Awards provides $4,000 to six area high school students for education and training expenses, with eighteen finalists each winning $1,000. The program also provides a $2,500 Arts Educator Award for Excellence in Arts Instruction.

The Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 1:00 PM at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Winners will be announced immediately following the competition. Visual Art Finalists Exhibition will showcased in the Aronoff Center’s Center Stage Room (adjacent to the Weston Art Gallery on 7th Street) from Tuesday, March 3 – Saturday, March 7, 2020.

This year, 369 students were nominated by their schools or studios to compete in one of six artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. The Overture Awards was developed to recognize, encourage, and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. It also provides students an opportunity to share their talents and interests among their peers in a supportive environment outside of their individual schools. There are three levels of competition: Regional, Semi-Final, and Final.

The Overture Awards Regionals Competitions were held on January 25 at the Immanuel School of Music, Northern Kentucky University, and Mount Saint Joseph University. The top twenty percent of the competitors in each discipline advanced to the Semi-Finals, which were held at the Aronoff Center on February 6-8. Twenty-five finalists will compete in the Finals Competition at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater on March 7.

Now in its 24th year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation (now Duke Energy) and Leadership Cincinnati (a program of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber). The Overture Awards is funded and administered by the Cincinnati Arts Association, which operates and manages the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. The Overture Awards also relies on hundreds of volunteers from the community who help raise funds, adjudicate and manage the competitions, and nurture the program.

Arts Educator Award For Excellence in Arts Instruction

The Arts Educator Award promotes and rewards excellence in arts instruction throughout Greater Cincinnati. An educator who teaches any of the following arts disciplines may be nominated: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. They can be a high school arts specialist, teaching artist working with high school students, or an arts professional or educator providing private lessons or instruction. Nominations for the award must come from students between the ages of 14-19 who are currently enrolled in high school. Nominations are made by submitting an on-line application with a three-minute video about why the nominee is an exemplary arts educator.

The winner of the 2020 award will receive $2,500, and two finalists will receive $500 each. The recipients of the Arts Educator Award may utilize the monetary award to strengthen their program or practice, e.g. an artist fee for a guest lecturer or master class, the purchase of equipment, or a professional learning opportunity such as tuition assistance for either the educator or for students to study with the recipient or another professional.

Region’s Bourbon History Takes Center Stage August 2020

GEORGE REMUS staged reading and bourbon tasting at The Carnegie

(COVINGTON, KY) – Few things are more Kentucky than bourbon, and a local trio wrote a musical to celebrate part of the beverage’s more infamous history. Songwriting team Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, the team behind TENDERLY: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY MUSICAL, and their partner, lauded playwright Joseph McDonough, will offer a sneak preview of their new musical, GEORGE REMUS, at The Carnegie rescheduled to August 2020. Tickets are $35 for show and tasting, $15 for show only, and available at thecarnegie.com.

The musical tells the fascinating, true, and sometimes unbelievable history of George Remus, a German immigrant, pharmacist, and bootlegger who moved from Chicago to the Cincinnati area during prohibition to be near 80% of the country’s bonded whiskey after finding a loophole in the enforcement of prohibition.

“Returning to The Carnegie and having my own work performed on this beautiful stage, produced by their amazing staff, is a thrill and a dream realized,” said Friedman. “I am excited that the audience for GEORGE REMUS will experience this story and hear the music for the first time ever. It is also a delight that the musical will be performed mere blocks away from where Remus lived the last twenty years of his life, and in a place that holds so many memories for me.”

The first song from the musical, “Who the Hell is Andrew Volstead?” was released October 28 on the 100th anniversary of the Volstead Act. The Act was passed to enforce the 18th Amendment, prohibiting the production, sale, and transport of intoxicating liquors. The song can be found on The Carnegie’s Facebook page, along with a link to purchase tickets for the premier staged reading of the full show on March 29, 2020.

“I was so excited when Janet, Mark, and Joe brought this project to The Carnegie,” said Carnegie Theatre Director Maggie Perrino. “George Remus has so many ties to the area, and I think it’s perfect to debut this musical, not in New York or Los Angeles, but in the heart of bourbon country where he really lived.”

The March staging will be accompanied by bourbon and whiskey tastings including Jim Beam Black, Maker’s 46, Knob Creek Single Barrel, and Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye. Following the staged reading the writer and composers will host a Q&A session. Tickets for the show and tasting are $35, $15 for the show only and available at thecarnegie.com.

Cincinnati-based Yates Vogt and Friedman are award-winning composers, lyricists, and playwrights. Their musicals have played worldwide in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Teaming up with Yates Vogt and Friedman is playwright Joseph McDonough, two-time winner of the Mickey Kaplan New American Play Prize. McDonough has had several of his plays premier at the Ensemble Theatre and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. 

The Carnegie’s 2019-20 Theatre Series is presented by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation. Additional support comes from the Kentucky Department of Tourism.

One-Man Retelling of Shakespeare’s CORIOLANUS: REQUIEM

CORIOLANUS: REQUIEM, a one man retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name, is being staged for two performances this weekend.
