Auditions Announced for 2017 Season Chorus at Cincinnati Opera

co_logoCINCINNATI–Auditions for Cincinnati Opera’s 2017 Summer Festival Chorus will be held at the Cincinnati Club, located at 30 Garfield Place, Cincinnati, Ohio on December 1, 2, 3, and 4, 2016.

The Cincinnati Opera Chorus is a paid, professional chorus under the jurisdiction of AGMA, the American Guild of Musical Artists. Residents from outside of the Greater Cincinnati area are welcome and encouraged to audition. However, applicants should be aware that most chorus members tend to be cast locally. Rehearsals and performances for the 2017 Summer Festival will begin in mid-May (exact start dates TBD) and run through the end of July.

Audition Process
Audition requests are now received exclusively through an online application process. Applications must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2016. Please email auditions@cincinnatiopera.org with any questions.

  1. Complete the online application at https://form.jotform.com/62555502887161.
    Applicants are required to upload a resume (PDF only, please) detailing performance experience. A headshot/photo is appreciated, but not required.
  2. Audition times will be assigned in the order they were received beginning November 21, 2016. Notification of assigned audition times will be sent to applicants via email.
  3. Auditions will be held at the Cincinnati Club (30 Garfield Place, Cincinnati, OH 45202). Singers should prepare two (2) contrasting arias in the original languages. An accompanist will be provided.

2017 Season
Cincinnati Opera’s 2017 Summer Festival, which will run from June 15 to July 23, opens with the heartbreaking English National Opera co-production of La Bohème, conducted by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Music Director Louis Langrée. It will be followed by the company premiere of Robert Xavier Rodríguez’s Frida, inspired by the life and work of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The season closes with the spectacular Barrie Kosky/1927 production of The Magic Flute from the Komische Oper Berlin. All mainstage productions will be presented at the Aronoff Center for the Arts in Downtown Cincinnati due to renovation work at Music Hall. Cincinnati Opera will also collaborate with concert:nova on a special presentation of Missy Mazzoli’s Song from the Uproar. The season will commence with the fifth annual free Opera in the Park concert in Washington Park on June 11.

Auditions Announced for 2017 Season Young Artists at Cincinnati Opera

co_logoCINCINNATI–Auditions for Cincinnati Opera’s 2017 Young Artist positions will be held at the Cincinnati Club, located at 30 Garfield Place, Cincinnati, Ohio on December 1, 2, 3, and 4, 2016.

Young Artist positions are specifically for young, up-and-coming singers who wish to gain professional experience and exposure in the opera industry. Young Artists will be engaged as Choristers in Cincinnati Opera’s 2017 Summer Festival productions. In addition to their chorus duties, Young Artists will perform at various donor and patron events and programs during the season, and may also be engaged to cover principal roles in rehearsals or perform comprimario roles in mainstage performances. Young Artists have the opportunity to work with distinguished professionals in the field, as well as experienced staff members, to build and enhance repertoire through private coachings. Rehearsals and performances for the 2017 Summer Festival will begin mid-May (exact start dates TBD) and run through the end of July.

Audition Process
Auditions are by invitation through an application process. Not all applicants will receive an audition. Applicants who receive an audition are also eligible for positions in the 2017 Summer Festival Chorus. Please email auditions@cincinnatiopera.org with any questions.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
A high-speed roller-coaster type condensation of all 37 (gasp!) of Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies and histories in one wild ride that will leave you breathless with laughter. This hilarious, fast-paced show is the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s flagship production. Performed for decades, all over the world, it brings together Shakespeare, satire, sight gags, pop culture references, improv, and some audience interaction for a great night of theatre.

WHAT WE NEED:

  • We are looking for 3 cast members (male or female).
  • The cast must be able to move and execute a fast-paced, physically demanding show.
  • Improv experience may be a bonus but not required

All shows are at 8PM

Please prepare a 30 second musical theatre or pop song in the style of the show for auditions and expect a short dance combination to be taught and some people may be asked to stay and cold read.

Synopsis: It’s 1955, in a square little town in a square little state. Suddenly, in rides a guitar-playing roustabout who changes everything and everyone he meets! This hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such Elvis Presley classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” Librettist Joe DiPietro’s tale of mistaken identity and romance that ensues was inspired by Twelfth Night and other Shakespearean comedies. The show is all-new, but the music is all Elvis!

Cast of Characters:

  • NATALIE HALLER (Early 20’s): a mechanic.
  • CHAD: a great-lookin’, motorcycling, guitar-playing, leather-jacketed roustabout.
  • JIM HALLER (mid 40’s-50’s): Natalie’s widowed father.
  • SYLVIA (mid 40’s): the no-nonsense, African-American owner of SYLVIA’S HONKY-TONK.
  • LORRAINE: Sylvia’s 16 year-old daughter.
  • DENNIS: a young, awkward, aspiring dentist.
  • MISS SANDRA: the beautiful, intellectual caretaker of the town’s museum.
  • MAYOR MATILDA HYDE (mid 40’s-50’s): the town’s conservative mayor.
  • DEAN HYDE: Matilda’s 16 year-old son. He has grown up at a military boarding school.
  • SHERIFF EARL (mid 40’s-50’s): the law in town. A man of not many words.
