ETC Opens 40th Anniversary 2025–2026 Season with Award-Winning Musical NEXT TO NORMAL, Sep. 13–Oct. 5, 2025

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) kicks off its 40th Anniversary Season with the regional musical revival of one of its bestselling shows and fan favorite, Next to Normal, returning to ETC’s stage September 13 October 5, 2025. This Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning rock musical, with an extraordinary score by Tom Kitt and poignant book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, delves into the heart of a family shattered by mental illness but held together by love. Hailed by The New York Times as a “transformative” musical, this modern masterpiece is a must-see theatrical event. Premiere sponsors are Daniel Brown and Mark Haggard. Directed by D. Lynn Meyers.

Diana Goodman is a suburban mom struggling with bipolar disorder. Her daughter, Natalie, is a stressed-out overachiever ready to snap. And Dan, her exhausted architect husband, is determined to keep everything “normal.” As Diana’s symptoms worsen and effective treatment remains elusive, the Goodmans must finally connect and learn how to see each other for who they truly are. A cathartic and empathetic triumph of contemporary musical theatre, Next to Normal features soaring rock music, unforgettable characters, and a gripping, emotionally resonant story that echoes long after the final note.

“This isn’t a remount; this is a reinvention, a revival of the magnificent show we produced 14 years ago,” says Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers. “We were the first theatre in the country to receive the regional rights to do this show in 2011 and after a hugely successful run, it honestly never occurred to me that we could or would do it again. But for our 40th Anniversary, we wanted to do something from the vault. In a time when there’s so much discord in our world, we needed to stop and focus on what it means to lose, to gain, to make our own choices, and to stay alive. It’s an exceedingly real look at how trauma and grief can change someone and be unapologetic about what it costs to truly love someone.”

Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day. Poignant, heartfelt, and deeply moving, the show is a testament to the strength of love in the face of tragedy. It’s a story that will leave you reflecting on life’s challenges and the enduring power of human connection.

Character Breakdown

Becca –  female – late 30s/early 40s
Becca is a Type A personality. No-nonsense, practical, and uncompromising, she cannot tolerate insincerity or impracticality. She has been defined by her position as a wife and mother, but in the wake of her 4-year-old son’s death, she seems to have shut down emotionally. Becca tries to keep everything together as much for herself as for everyone else until she can’t. She has tried to bottle up and contain her grief.

Howie –  male – late 30s/early 40s, Becca’s Husband
Howie is a man of patience, often appearing as if everything is all right. Howie inadvertently creates distance between himself and Becca. Whereas Becca isolates herself completely in her grieving, Howie seeks support from a grief counseling group that ultimately undermines their relationship. He and Becca have grown distant since Danny’s death, though he tries to connect with her. Howie, too, is devasted by the loss, but he is seemingly more ready to move on with life on the surface.

Izzy –  female – early 30s, Becca’s Sister
Izzy is the younger sister of Becca and is the id to Becca’s superego. A perennial party girl who never grew up, Izzy is still trying to find herself. She is impulsive, irresponsible, and a bit rough around the edges, but she is always fiercely loyal to her sister. Izzy brings levity to the play.

Nat –  female – mid 60s, Becca and Izzy’s Mother
Nat is a strong, opinionated, but compassionate woman with a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Though she and Becca argue, she is a supportive figure who still grieves the death of her own son, Arthur.

Jason –  a 17-year-old boy
Jason is a very smart, responsible, but socially awkward teenager who is earnest and has good intentions. He very much wants to connect with Becca and Howie after the accident.

26 PEBBLES Runs Sept. 19-28

26 PEBBLES
Troy Civic Theatre
Sept. 19-28
[Troy]

Directed by Michael Schumacher

Cast: Savvy Hostetler as Actor 1, Jim Hagan as Actor 2, Derek Dunavent as Actor 3, Rachel Terrell as Actor 4, Madison Wells as Actor 5 and Niccole SueAnn Wallace as Actor 6

“On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 26 innocent souls before taking his own life. These 26 innocent deaths, like pebbles thrown into a pond, created ripples and vibrations that were felt far beyond the initial rings. This is the story of those vibrations.

Similar in style to The Laramie Project, 26 Pebbles is a heartbreaking and riveting docudrama. Playwright Eric Ulloa conducted interviews with members of the community in Newtown and crafted them into an exploration of gun violence and a small town shaken by a horrific event.”

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh, Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.
