ETC Announces Winner of 7th Annual PLAY/WRITE: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) is pleased to announce the winner of the seventh annual PLAY/write: The Jackie Demaline Regional Collegiate Playwriting Competition. The annual collegiate competition nurtures local aspiring dramatists who are helping to shape the future of American theatre and provides a $2,500 juried cash award to support the early work and career of each winner along with staged professional readings of their scripts.

The winner of this year’s prize is Dinithi Fernando (University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music) for her play Be Patient, My Little Grasshopper, which will receive a full-length professional reading on Sunday, October 19 at 2:00 pm at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.

The panel of judges would also like to recognize Iris Shipley (CCM) as the runner up for her play Last Call.

About the Competition
The competition commemorates the life and work of writer, critic, and theatre enthusiast Jackie Demaline. A passionate arts advocate, Ms. Demaline served as an important catalyst for change in the theater community and was an entertainment writer and editor for numerous publications. Her legacy lives on through this competition, providing professional development for emerging writers, amplifying new voices and perspectives, and kick-starting arts careers.

About the Play
Be Patient, My Little Grasshopper by Dinithi Fernando is a new dramedy that explores first relationships, identity, and how Sri Lankan culture wrestles with trauma. Lakshani has loved her college experience so far: she’s thriving with new friends, balancing family visits, and dreaming of the future. Then she meets him. Charming, funny, irresistible . . . until he isn’t. What starts as flirtation turns dark as his attention becomes dangerous. Lakshani is caught between her family’s expectations, her own fears, and the terrifying reality of a stalker who won’t let go. Can she confide in her parents? Will she find a way to break free? Or will silence put her—and everyone around her—at risk?

About the Playwright
Dinithi Fernando is currently an acting student at University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Her credits include playing M in Peerless at the Human Race Theatre, playing Mamillius in The Winter’s Tale at CCM, and writing and acting in this past year’s Transmigration Festival at CCM. She is working towards creating more representation in the industry, raising awareness about different social issues, and telling stories about her culture. Dinithi hopes Be Patient, My Little Grasshopper can raise awareness about stalking, assault, and how Sri Lankan culture deals with trauma.

Z IS FOR ZEBRA Enlivens Arts as Advocacy Through Disabled Artists Telling Disabled Stories

An encore performance of a show critics called “tightly executed, deeply personal, and often
wickedly funny”

[Cincinnati, OH] Back by popular demand, after a sold out run at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Z IS FOR ZEBRA is returning to the Know Theatre of Cincinnati’s stage for a limited run in early October. Hailed as “a tightly executed, deeply personal, and often wickedly funny piece” (Kirk Sheppard) Z IS FOR ZEBRA, written by Katie Scarlett, explores the relationship between chronic illness and grief told through the eyes of a professor giving a lecture on Kubler-Ross’s “stages of grief.” But what happens when the professor’s overconfident (and unwanted) TA takes her on a whirlwind journey through her own hardships with chronic illness? Together, they navigate the path to acceptance (no matter how fleeting) through a series of successes and struggles with humor, heart, and a lot of pill bottles.

The show will run from October 2nd- 5th at The Know Theatre on 1120 Jackson Street. The cast includes: Ben Dudley, Kate Stark, and Katie Scarlett. Production team includes: Liz Carman (director), ErinMarie Suscheck (stage manager), and designers Becca Schall, Jared Earland, and Rupert Spraul.

Scarlett, who is disabled herself, strongly believes in art as a form of advocacy. “For a lot of chronically ill people self-advocacy starts young in medical settings. You must learn how to stand up for yourself because often you’re not believed by medical professionals or you receive a lot of pushback,” Scarlett says. “This show for me was a way of broadening my advocacy past myself. My story isn’t unique. I can name multiple people in the disabled and chronic illness communities who have shared similar experiences. Most people don’t know how hard it is to navigate a complex healthcare system when the chronic part of being ill never ends. It’s exhausting to live in a body that defies you every step of the way and the medical system that is meant to help shouldn’t be part of that exhaustion.” This message is important as, according to the CDC, more than 1 in 4 adults in the United States are disabled. Most people have someone in their life that has struggled with their health, this story provides more context to relate on a deeper level.

It was important to Scarlett to build a team of disabled artists. She believes disabled stories need to be told, and by disabled artists whenever possible. “I was astounded by the amount of people who came up to me afterwards and told me they felt like they were watching their story, or a part of their story, unfold onstage,” Scarlett says. “If it wasn’t their personal story, it was the story of a loved one or a friend. I was honored that so many people suggested the show as a must watch for medical professionals. I think it points to the unfortunate shared experience of navigating the medical world as a patient who doesn’t fit into traditional boxes. I’m so excited so many people wanted to come back and experience the show again.”

Now Open at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park: WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA

TAKE A HEARTFELT FATHER-SON JOURNEY IN WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA NOW OPEN AT CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK

CINCINNATI – Playhouse favorite Timothy Douglas has returned to  Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to direct WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA, now open at the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. The poignant, beautiful story with lyrical storytelling and live folk music runs through Sept. 28.

Isaiah Tyrelle Boyd (Jonah), Robert Cornelius (Jean), Rob Morrison (Musician) and Rachel Fobbs (Musician) in Where the Mountain Meets the Sea at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Photo by Mikki Schaffner.

When Jonah learns of his estranged father’s death, he recreates the cross-country trip that his Haitian immigrant parents took before he was born. As he traces their journey across America and bonds with the music his father adored, time blurs and erases the distance between them as Jonah seeks to understand his father’s life and legacy in an emotional and evocative tale of the everlasting bond of a father and son.

TheaterMania called WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA, “Heartfelt and deeply resonant. It’s easy to get lost in the music and mystery.”

The Playhouse production will be directed by Timothy Douglas, who staged Primary Trust in Cincinnati last season. He helmed the Washington, DC area premiere of WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA in 2024 at Signature Theatre, and found the story moved him on a personal level.

Speaking about the father-son relationship in the story, Douglas said, “I think for both of them it’s another classic example, theatrically told, that these two are so much alike and don’t even know it, What appeals to me about both is their willingness to give over to speaking to and defining what remains what’s unknown about the other person.”

Beautifully contemplative indie folk music by The Bengsons accent Augustin’s palpable storytelling. The duo were winners of the Jonathan Larson and Richard Rodgers Awards and are known for their viral hit, “The Keep Going Song,” as well as three singles featured on So You Think You Can Dance.

“The Bengsons are incredible,” said Musician and Music Director Rob Morrison. “Musically, their writing is always surprising. They also know how to tell a story, and they tell it in a very honest way that’s from the heart.”

PLAYHOUSE PERSPECTIVES
Cultural Duality: Living and Thriving Between Two Worlds
Monday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Playhouse

Living and thriving in a country that is not your place of origin can mean existing in a space of cultural duality — embracing the opportunities and challenges of your new country while staying rooted in the traditions, language, and beliefs of your home culture. Cultural duality is about creating an identity that allows for growth, connection and authenticity in both worlds.

Join us for a panel discussion with members of our community who, like the character of Jean, live this dual experience. This event is FREE, but reservations are requested.

Have you ever wondered how a professional actor works with a playwright’s text? In this masterclass, actor and teaching pro Robert Cornelius (currently featured in Where the Mountain Meets the Sea) will introduce you to the musicality and poetry of playwright, August Wilson. Using monologues from Wilson’s American Century Cycle of plays, each one set in a different decade of the 20th century, you will dive into the text and have a chance to speak the words yourself. Whether you are an audience member interested in a behind-the-scenes look at an actor’s process, or a performer looking to enhance your skills, this masterclass is for you.

Robert Cornelius is an actor and educator based in Chicago. He has taught at every level from high school to working professionals and has performed professionally all over the country.

The description is timed to avoid interfering with dialogue. Before the show and during intermission, show and actor information are shared.
