Special sensory-friendly performance April 14, PLUS all shows ASL-interpreted
Cincinnati, OH (April 9, 2023) – Cincinnati Ballet’s Family Series: Beauty and the Beast opens this Thursday! The hour-long, narrated production at the Aronoff Center, April 13-16 is perfect for families. Cincinnati Ballet is proud to continue its commitment to accessible programming for all children for this annual production. In partnership with Cincinnati Children’s, Cincinnati Ballet will offer a dedicated sensory-friendly performance on Friday, April 14 at 10:30 am. Sensory-friendly performances are created to provide a supportive and welcoming experience for those with sensory processing challenges to enjoy live ballet with their friends and family. The environment is relaxed and may include lighting, sound, and other production modifications. Electronic devices, fidgets, and other support items are allowed in the theater. Patrons are also permitted to enter and leave the theater during the performance. In addition, every performance of Beauty and the Beast will be ASL (American Sign Language) interpreted. Select performances will also be audio-described for patrons who are visually impaired. “Cincinnati Ballet believes dance is for everyone. We strive to break down attendance barriers for all audiences,” said Scott Altman, Cincinnati Ballet President and CEO. “Cincinnati Ballet is committed to providing a welcoming experience for our deaf, hard of hearing and vision impaired guests, as well as those with sensory sensitivities.”
The Family Series is an hour-long, narrated ballet performed by the Second Company – CB2 and Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy students. This year, be our guest for the ‘tale as old as time – Beauty and the Beast.’ The love of Beauty, a kind and curious girl, saves a prince cursed to live as a Beast. Plus, the patron experience starts at the door. The Aronoff Center will be transformed into the Beast’s Castle, with free games, crafts, photos, and other activities on all three levels. We are so pleased to welcome families back to the Aronoff for an interactive dance performance created with children in mind. Beauty and the Beast features the familiar storyline re-interpreted with incredible dance. The production, choreographed by Pamela Robinson Harris, is also narrated, making the story easy for even the youngest members of your family to understand and enjoy. The production runs a little over an hour.

Character Breakdown: listed ages are stage ages
JOY, mid-20s to late 30s, a freelance graphic artist. At the outset, Joy has received a life-saving heart transplant but is conflicted about what to do now. Smart, sometimes acerbic, attractive but rudderless with her new lease on life.
HANK, early 60s. He is nearing retirement as head of a small building supplies company. Husband to Alice and father to Sammy and the now deceased heart donor, Jack, Hank is pushing forward, trying very hard not to wallow in or even barely acknowledge his grief and guilt. He can be snappish, abrupt and lately has been drinking more than he ought. He believes he’s handling things just fine.
JACK, 36, an accountant with aspirations of being a professional photographer. He dresses fashionably, hipster-ish. Jack is dead at the outset but nonetheless appears throughout the show. He’s not a ghost exactly, more of a memory that lingers.
ALICE, early 60s, mother to the deceased Jack and to Sammy. She’s a solid, loving, enduring presence. She knows her husband and is aware of what he’s going through. She accepts his scorn until she doesn’t anymore. A big heart that is dealing with its own pain while trying to hold the family together and do the right thing.
SAMMY, 20s-30s, a preschool teacher and Jack’s younger sister. She’s somewhat “new agey” but with an enormous heart. She really wants to help in any way she can. She writes a blog where she might over-share her life, to Hank’s consternation. She can give in too easily to her emotions but of everyone, she is the most in touch with them.
NURSE/DARLA, 30s-60s. Nurse is very competent if a bit annoying in her approach. She’s by the book in all things but, probably because she is so busy, can sometimes condescend. A functionary but a positive person with a small religious streak. Darla is somewhat flamboyant, artsy, very caring for Joy. A singular soul in habit and dress. She worries about and wants the best for her friend.
