A CHRISTMAS STORY Runs Dec. 12-17

VTA_A Christmas Story logoA CHRISTMAS STORY
Victoria Theatre Association
Dec. 12-17
Victoria Theatre [Dayton]

You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.
How many times do you think you’ve enjoyed the film? Now it’s your turn to see it come to life on stage in a fresh new way — with all your favorite comic moments! Humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas (“You’ll shoot your eye out!”). All the elements from the beloved movie are in this play, including that temperamental furnace, the Scut Farkus affair, the “double dog dare ya” with the flagpole at school, the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, Ralphie’s dad’s “major award” (a.k.a. the leg lamp), and much more.

For the holidays, TCT will treat audiences to a Cinderella Christmas. In this hilarious holiday panto, you’ll jeer at the deliciously dysfunctional stepmother and sisters as much as you’ll cheer for Cinderella in her quest to attend the magnificent Christmas Ball. With plenty of audience participation, side-splitting humor, and outlandish characters, boys will love this classic fairytale set to pop music just as much as girls!

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO Quick Review

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO presented Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Dec. 17. I attended the opening night performance.

If you never had a chance to see Groucho Marx perform in person, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is giving you a month of opportunities to see the next best thing: Frank Ferrante.

Once Ferrante dons the iconic greasepaint mustache and eyebrows shortly into the performance, it is easy to forget you are not watching Marx. Personal stories of Groucho and the Marx Brothers are interspersed with classic comedy bits and songs.

Although listed with a run time of 90 minutes, Ferrante’s masterful improvisational skills and quick wit make his interactions with the audience a highlight of the evening – and adds about 30 minutes to the run-time. This, however, is not a complaint. 🙂

With the audience seated on three sides of the stage, there were times when it was hard to hear the dialogue if the actor had his back to your section of the audience. Ferrante could really use a microphone.

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO is laugh-out-loud funny, with the jokes coming at breakneck speed and expertly delivered with great zeal and respect for the comic legend.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The Tony-nominated musical WAITRESS is searching for “LULU” for Cincinnati performances

AUDITIONS ARE CLOSED!
All Available Audition Slots Have Been Filled.

Cincinnati, OH – WAITRESS, the Tony nominated musical, will be premiering at the Aronoff Center on January 9, 2018 for a limited two week engagement and is looking for two young girls to perform the role of “Lulu” for the duration of the local engagement.

The character of “Lulu” is a sweet and carefree 4 to 5-year-old who appears in the production’s finale scene.  Qualified young girls should be shorter than 4’2”, weigh less than 35 lbs and be no older than 5 years and 3 months.  Individual applicants are welcome, as are sets of twins or siblings. Space is limited to the first 40 applicants to sign up at Lulu Audition Sign-up.

The “Search for Lulu” will take place in Cincinnati on Tuesday, November 28 at the Aronoff Center and will be held in two sessions from 10am-11:30am and 1pm-2:30pm.  Only children who have been signed up and confirmed in advance will be seen, no walk-in applicants can audition. The audition will consist of the child reciting two lines from the show. If possible, parents should bring a current head shot and resume for each child, though headshot, resume and prior acting experience are not required.

Please note, selected children would need to be available for all performances January 9 – 21, and available to be at the theatre until as late as 10pm on weekdays and 10:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”) and direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland, Pippin, Hair).

Inspired by Adrienne Shelley’s beloved film WAITRESS tells the story of Jenna – a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage.  A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness.  But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

“It’s an empowering musical of the highest order!” raves the Chicago Tribune.  “WAITRESS is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment Weekly and “a monumental contribution to Broadway!” according to Marie Claire.  Don’t miss this uplifting musical celebrating friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.

WAITRESS will play the Aronoff Center from January 9 – 21, 2018: Tuesday – Thursday at 7:30PM, Friday at 8:00PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM, Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM.
