Sinclair Theatre Presents ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST

SCCT_One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest promoSinclair Theatre will present ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, by Dale Wasserman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey, from April 8-16th, in Blair Hall in building 2 on the downtown Dayton campus.

Directed by Nelson Sheeley, the story focuses on a charming rogue, Randle P. McMurphy, who chooses to serve a short sentence in a mental institution rather than one in a prison. Quickly, he takes over the ward and accomplishes what the medical profession has been unable to do; helping fellow patients improve their condition through unorthodox antics. He clashes with the head nurse Ratched, who resents his successes and retaliates by abusing her authority. The 1975 Academy Award winning film, starring Jack Nicholson, was based on the novel so offers vastly different dialogue than the stage play. It is also more of an ensemble piece, rather than a star vehicle for Nicholson.

Reserved seating is available at $18 for adults/$15 for students and seniors with exception of Throwback Thursdays when ALL seats cost $10. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.sinclair.edu/tickets or at the box office, one hour prior to performances (if tickets are still available). Performance times are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10th and at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Apr. 14th. Thursday and Sunday performances are American Sign Language interpreted by Frank Gayhart, Andrew Burris and Jordan Israel-Kendrick.

There will also be a midweek morning matinee at 10 a.m. on Wed., April 13th for high school and home school groups at a reduced rate. For group information contact: patti.celek@sinclair.edu

ROKCincy Opera Brings THE WIZARD OF OZ’s Yellow Brick Road to the Arts Center at Dunham’s Free Family Fun Series

ACAD_The Wizard of Oz logoCINCINNATI, OH – March 22, 2016 — The Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham welcomes Dorothy, Toto and all the magical Oz characters for ROKCincy Opera for Children’s performance of THE WIZARD OF OZ on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m.

Using the beloved and familiar story written by Frank Baum and made famous by the 1939 film, ROKCincy has added operatic classics to enhance the drama and retell the tale as only they can. The 40 minute performance includes a question and answer session with the cast. ROKCincy is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.

“The Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham is a big success and enables families to experience the performing arts especially designed for children,” said Carrie Mees, who supports programming at the Arts Center at Dunham.

After THE WIZARD OF OZ, the remaining Free Family Fun Series performance is The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi by Y York and performed by the Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill Productions on Saturday, April 23 at 2 pm. Courtesy of a grant from Price Hill Arts CAT. Rudyard Kipling’s beloved classic comes alive in this fun, free-flowing adaptation. The bossy bird Darzee is furious when Rikki Tikki Tavi washes up in her garden. With the dimwitted muskrat Chuchu, she pulls out all of the stops to convince the pesky young mongoose to leave. That is until they see that the tyrannical cobra Nag runs in fear of Rikki Tikki Tavi. Ultimately, the three must band together to save their home in this delightful comedy about sharing and cooperation. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

Reservations for all performances in the ACAD FREE Family Fun Series can be made online (www.sunsetplayers.org), or by calling the reservation/information line at 513-588-4988.

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s 2015-16 Off the Hill Series Concludes with the Beloved Classic THE GARDEN OF RIKKI TIKKI TAVI, April 16-May 22

PIP_The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi logo(CINCINNATI) – Rudyard Kipling’s classic story about a mongoose, bird and muskrat who band together against a cobra to save their garden home brings the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s 2015-16 Off the Hill series for families to a close with performances from April 16 through May 22. Adapted by award-winning playwright Y York, THE GARDEN OF RIKKI TIKKI TAVI is a delightful comedy about sharing and cooperation recommended for audiences ages 5 and up.

When mongoose Rikki Tikki Tavi arrives unannounced in the garden, she threatens the status quo, much to the fury of tailor bird Darzee and muskrat Chuchu. They try everything they can think of to persuade Rikki Tikki Tavi to leave — until they discover that the mongoose causes the garden’s cruel cobra Nag to run in fear. That’s when they realize that they should work together to protect their shared home.

“Through the journey of the play Rikki Tikki Tavi learns to embrace who she is,” explains Playhouse Director of Education Daunielle Rasmussen, who will make her Cincinnati directing debut with the production. “By forging deep friendships and working hard to find solutions with her new friends, she creates a home for herself and takes her place as the protector of the garden.”

THE GARDEN OF RIKKI TIKKI TAVI will debut “on the hill” at the Playhouse, with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Tickets for the Playhouse performances may be purchased through the Box Office for $5. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, families are invited to become the art makers with Rikki Tikki Tavi-related crafts, coloring and tons of family fun between the Playhouse’s performances.

The cast of THE GARDEN OF RIKKI TIKKI TAVI includes Robert Carlton Stimmel (Teddy/Nag), Erin Ward (Chuchu), Renika Williams (Darzee) and Lilian Wouters (Rikki Tikki Tavi), all members of the Playhouse’s 2015-16 Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company. Other production team members, in addition to Rasmussen, include set designer Kenton Brett, costume designer Jonathan P. Waters and stage manager Tracy Hoida.

The cast members will explore physicality and vocal techniques in order to embody the various animals in the show. The aim is to strike a balance between the fun of straying from human realism and the challenge of maintaining the integrity of the story being told by these unique characters.

“Our cast and creative team are a group of extraordinary artists whose individual strengths will blend into a tapestry of color and movement, creating a vibrant interpretation of this classic story,” says Rasmussen, who has directed theatre for young audiences at Marin Theatre Company in the past. She hopes the show will spark conversations surrounding the definitions of community and family — exploring how we learn to share and work together in the gardens of our neighborhoods, our schools and our nuclear and extended families.

Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with American Workers, Working paints a vivid portrait of the men and women the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife. This new 2012 version of Working is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. The key is how people’s relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. The show, still set in contemporary America, contains timeless truths.
