The 2016-2017 Season line-up is as follows:

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett
adapted by Wendy Kesselman
September 9- October 1, 2016
In a tiny attic in Amsterdam in 1944, two families of Jewish refugees hide in silence from the Nazi Regime below.  Unable to speak for fear of being discovered, the young Anne Frank tells her story by writing in her diary. The Diary of Anne Frank is a harrowingly intimate view of history’s greatest atrocity as seen through the eyes of one extraordinary young girl.  The chronicle of her family’s experience endures as both a condemning indictment of man’s capacity for cruelty and a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.

THE ELEPHANT MAN
By Bernard Pomerance
October 14- November 5, 2016
This Tony Award winning play tells the true life tale of Joseph Merrick, whose severe physical deformities landed him in a Victorian freak-show. Joseph is rescued by Frederick Treves, a young doctor who discovers that behind the disfigured visage, lies not an animal, but an intelligent mind and a sensitive soul. As their friendship develops, Frederick endeavors to show the world to Joseph, who discovers it is both more beautiful and more cruel than he could have imagined.

William Shakespeare’s
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
November 18- December 10, 2016
Beatrice and Benedick are the perfect match. It’s too bad they can’t stand each other. When their war of wits comes to a head, their friends decide there’s only one thing to be done- trick the hapless couple into falling hopelessly love. They set in motion a series of plots, pranks, plans and ploys all designed to bring the cynical Benedick and spirited Beatrice into a “mountain of affection.” Will their scheming succeed, or will it all be Much Ado About Nothing?

William Shakespeare’s
HENRY VI: The Wars of the Roses Continues
January 20- February 11, 2017
The History Cycle spirals towards its inevitable end in the penultimate chapter of Shakespeare’s greatest saga. Sides have been chosen and loyalties tested as the Wars of the Roses rage on. The houses of York and Lancaster contend for control of the kingdom, and in the midst of the chaos a certain hunch-backed hellion begins his infamous maneuverings to win the crown. Paired with the upcoming production of Richard III, this theatrical event is not to be missed!

William Shakespeare’s
RICHARD III
February 17- March 11, 2017
Shakespeare’s game of thrones enters its endgame as the history cycle’s final chapter takes the stage. The ruthless, remorseless and relentless Richard Plantaganet has his eyes set on the throne of England, and he makes the happy earth his hell as he carves a bloody swath through all that stands in his way. The History Cycle comes to its thrilling conclusion with the story of England’s most murderous monarch, Richard III.

March 24- April 15, 2017
A RAISIN IN THE SUN
By Lorraine Hansberry
A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of the Youngers, a working class family in 1950s Chicago. When an unexpected financial windfall gives them the opportunity for a better life, conflicts within the family and pressures from without threaten to shatter their opportunity at the American dream. The recipient of four Tony Award nominations, A Raisin in the Sun is a true masterpiece of the American stage.

April 28- May 20, 2017
William Shakespeare’s
THE TEMPEST
Betrayed and exiled to a deserted island, with only his books and his infant daughter for company, the magician Prospero has spent years plotting his revenge. When fate places all his old enemies within his reach, Prospero summons a magical storm that brings them crashing down onto his shores. This romantic tale replete with magic and monsters, love and liquor, and retribution and redemption is a voyage you won’t want to miss.

CAA Announcs 2016 Overture Award Winners

$45,500 Awarded for Excellence in the Arts
Arts Educator Award Winner Also Announced

CAA_Overture Awards logoCINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Arts Association is pleased to announce the winners of its Overture Awards Competition, held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater, and the winner of its new Arts Educator Award for Excellence in Arts Instruction. The competition awarded $4,000 to six area students for education and training, with 18 runners-up each winning $1,000, while the Arts Educator Award winner received $2,500 and two finalists were awarded $500 each.

The Overture Awards recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12 and is the area’s largest solo arts competition. Students are nominated by their schools and/or private studios to compete in one of six disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. There are three levels of competition: Regional, Semi-Final, and Final.

The Arts Educator Award promotes and rewards excellence in arts instruction throughout Greater Cincinnati. An educator who teaches any of the following arts disciplines may be nominated: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. They can be a high school arts specialist, teaching artist working with high school students, or an arts professional or educator providing private lessons or instruction. Nominations for the award must come from students between the ages of 14-19 who are currently enrolled in high school. The Arts Educator Award finalists and winner are selected by a panel of judges who are arts professionals.

The Arts Educator Award was first introduced during the 2006-07 Season as the “Theater Educator Award” and was originally created by Jackie Demaline, former Cincinnati Enquirer theatre critic and arts reporter, as one of the first initiatives of the Enquirer’s Acclaim Awards for Excellence in Cincinnati Theatre. In recent years, the Theatre Educator Award was hosted and presented by the League of Cincinnati Theaters at its annual theatre award ceremony. With its move to the Cincinnati Arts Association’s Overture Awards program, the Theatre Educator Award has broadened its scope to become the Arts Educator Award.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH
By Frank Galati
From the novel by John Steinbeck
September 29 – October 9, 2016
NKU Corbett Theatre

A powerful and deeply affecting stage version of one of the masterpieces of American literature, there’s a reason why THE GRAPES OF WRATH is a classic. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the story’s themes—endurance, sacrifice, and family—are no less powerful today than they were 77 years ago, when John Steinbeck penned the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. This Tony Award-winning stage adaptation follows the Joad family on their flight from the dust bowl of Oklahoma, culminating in a soaring and deeply moving affirmation of the indomitability of the human spirit.

MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM
By August Wilson
October 25 – October 30, 2016
NKU Stauss Theatre

Chicago, 1927. In a recording studio on the city’s South Side, a battle of wills is raging. Ma Rainey, Mother of the Blues, uses every trick in the book to fight her record producers for control of her music. Hardened by years of ill-treatment and bad deals, she’s determined that ‘Black Bottom’, the song that bears her name, will be recorded her way. But Levee, the band’s swaggering young trumpet player, plans to catapult the band into the jazz age. His ambition puts them all in danger.

Inspired by the real-life Blues legend and infused with her music, August Wilson’s play speaks powerfully of a struggle for self-determination against overwhelming odds.

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
By Jeanine Tesori, Dick Scanlan, and Richard Henry Morris
December 1 – December 11, 2016
NKU Corbett Theatre

A high-spirited romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE tells the story of a small-town girl who travels to New York City to marry for money instead of love. Audiences will relive the roaring 1920s in this Tony Award-winning musical featuring jazz, thunderous tap dancing, frisky flappers and dashing leading men.

ALL SHOOK UP
Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley
Book by Joe DiPietro
February 16 – February 26, 2017
NKU Corbett Theatre

It’s 1955, and into a square little town in a square little state rides a guitar-playing roustabout who changes everything and everyone he meets in this hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy that’ll have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” The story is all new, the hits are all Elvis.
