Mozart and Haydn at Knox on March 8

knox_logoFebruary 10, 2015, Cincinnati, Ohio: The Knox Music Series, a community outreach program featuring sacred choral/orchestral masterworks produced by Knox Presbyterian Church presents:

Mozart and Haydn at Knox
W.A. Mozart Vespers (Vesperae solennes de confessor) K. 339
F.J. Haydn Harmoniemesse (Wind-Band Mass)

Sunday, March 8, 2015 | 2:00 PM
Knox Choir, Knox Soloists, Chamber Orchestra Earl Rivers, conductor

Knox Presbyterian Church
Michigan and Observatory Avenues, Hyde Park
Free admission – Free-will offering

Performers include the 50-voice Knox Choir, Knox Soloists, and Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Earl Rivers, Knox Church Director of Music. Featured Knox Soloists include Erin Keesy and Jasmine Habersham, sopranos; Theresa Merrill and Debra VanEngen, mezzo-sopranos; T.J. Capobianco and John Humphrey, tenors; Michael Young, baritone; and Derrell Acon, bass. A full Classical chamber orchestra of winds, brass, timpani, strings, and continuo organ will add a rich coloring to the work. Admission to this performance is free.

Composed in 1802, the 40-minute Harmoniemesse (Wind-Band Mass) is the last major choral/orchestral work of F.J. Haydn, the “father of the string quartet and the symphony.” Haydn’s Harmoniemesse is considered to be his last “symphony,” as the scale of the work exhibits the grand scope of a symphony with added voices. (In German, Harmonie means a band of wind instruments, and Haydn’s last masterwork is so named because of its large woodwind section.) Mozart composed his Vespers K. 339 in Salzburg in 1780, and he considered the work to be among his “finest sacred” compositions, circulating the score among the Viennese to display his skills as a composer of sacred music. The 25-minute Vespers comprises settings of five Psalms and the Magnificat from St. Luke.

VIDEO: Meet the Queen of Hearts from ALICE (in wonderland)

CB_Alice in WonderlandCincinnati Ballet presents the return of the wildly popular ALICE (in wonderland) this Valentine’s Day weekend, February 13-15 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Audiences have five opportunities to see this bold, spectacular take on Lewis Carroll’s classic stories with live instrumentation by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

“I don’t want her to be just one dimensional,” says Sarah Hairston, Cincinnati Ballet Principal Dancer and Queen of Hearts in the 2014-2015 production of ALICE (in wonderland). When it comes to getting into character, Sarah feels ready made for the role of Queen. In this interview we sit down to hear how Sarah works to balance the Queen of Heart’s severe “off with their heads” nature with the ballet’s funnier moments.

Kings Island Auditions on Feb. 21 & 22

MISC_Kings Island logoCalling all performers!

Do you love the stage? Do you enjoy being in the spotlight? Kings Island may have a job for you.

Kings Island’s entertainment department will hold auditions in search of trained, talented and versatile singers, dancers, musicians, variety artists, character cohorts, technicians and costumers for the 2015 season. Auditions will be held February 21-22 at Kings Island.

While we are looking for all style vocalists, we are especially in search of strong singers, comfortable signing in a classic rock style.

We are also looking for actors who feel comfortable and have experience working with live animals for a new family attraction.

Interested performers should prepare the following:

Singers: Prepare at least one up-tempo and one ballad in a pop style. You may not sing a cappella. An accompanist will be provided. Bring sheet music in the proper key or pre-recorded instrumental sound tracks (without lead vocals) on CD. You may be asked to read a brief monologue and to dance, so bring appropriate clothes and shoes for movement. Singers need to bring a current photo and one-page resume.

Dancers: Kings Island is looking for energetic, technically trained dancers experienced in jazz, ballet, hip-hop and acrobatics for an exciting new production. Dancers will be taught a combination during the audition. If dancers sing, please bring music as specified above. Please come prepared in comfortable and appropriate clothing and shoes. Dancers need to bring a current photo and one-page resume.

Musicians: Kings Island is casting for drums, trumpet, keyboard, bass guitar, alto and tenor saxophone and trombone. Please prepare two pieces of music in an up-tempo style. Musicians may be asked to sight read at the audition. Must be available six days per week June through mid-August and have open availability.

Variety Artists: Kings Island is looking for unique and creative acts. If you are an experienced performance artist with an awesome approach to entertainment, please prepare a montage of your best work no longer than four minutes in length. Please bring a current photo and one-page resume.

Actors: Kings Island is looking for experienced actors with strong improv skills and excellent comedic timing to perform various roles throughout the park. All ages are encouraged to audition. Please prepare a short family-friendly monologue and a one-page resume.

Show Characters: Energetic and animated dancers are needed for productions featuring costumed characters. Please come prepared in comfortable and appropriate clothing and shoes for a movement audition. Please bring a current photo and a one-page resume.

Character Cohort: Kings Island is looking for enthusiastic individuals to provide assistance to characters during their walks. Please bring a current photo and a one-page resume.

Technicians/Costumers: Interviews will be conducted for experienced sound operators, lighting operators, follow spot operators, stage crew and costumer positions. Interviews will be held on Audition Dates on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring a one-page resume with references.

Please note: Singers may be asked to stay for the Dancer Audition. You will be auditioned in order of arrival within your talent category. You must be 15 years of age to audition and/or interview.
