THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK March 19-22 in the SCPA Corbett Theater

The Diary of Anne Frank
March 19th to March 22nd 2015 in the SCPA Corbett Theater

SCPA_Diary of Anne FrankThe School for Creative & Performing Arts, a proud Cincinnati Public School and the only K-12 Public Arts School in the U.S., proudly presents its high school drama, The Diary of Anne Frank, adapted from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, edited by Otto Frank.

This critically acclaimed play tells the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who went into hiding during World War II to avoid the Nazis. Together with seven others, she hid in the secret annex on the Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam. After almost two years in hiding, they were discovered and deported to concentration camps. Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was the only one of the eight people to survive the concentration camps. After her death, the diary she wrote while in hiding was published and continues to this day to move and inspire people of all ages around the world. Anne’s story is as relevant today, 70 years after her death, as it was when it was first published in 1947. Director David Roth chose the play exactly because of its continuing relevance. “The issues of religious and racial intolerance, as we all read in the news, have never been abated.  Thus, The Diary of Anne Frank is as timely today as it was when first penned,” said Mr. Roth.

SCPA’s production features student actors in grades 9 through 12. Like all SCPA productions, students are also involved in the technical aspects of the show. In cooperation with the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, educational exhibits about the Holocaust will be on display in the theater lobby during the run of the show. SCPA will host a Holocaust survivor to speak to its students and is making plans for the cast to tour the Center’s permanent exhibit Mapping Our Tears. “The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education is thrilled to be a part of this partnership with SCPA to ensure that the story of Anne Frank continues to be shared,” said Alexis Storch, Director of Educational Outreach. The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education is located at 8401 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio.

In addition to four public performances, SCPA will present school day matinee performances on Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20. Tickets for the school day performances are only $5 and the shows will make a powerful complement to any lesson about World War II or the Holocaust.

Tickets to the public performances are just $15.00 for adults, $13.00 for seniors and $10.00 for students and children. To purchase tickets for all public shows visit the SCPA Box Office or purchase tickets online at http://www.showclix.com/events/8164. The box office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30AM to 11:30AM and from 3PM to 5PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11AM to 4PM, and 1 hour prior to all show times. Auditions Announced for MAN OF LA MANCHA at Lebanon Theatre Company

LTC_logoThe Lebanon Theatre Company has announced dates for auditions for their upcoming production of the classic musical MAN OF LA MANCHA.  The auditions will be held at 7 p.m. on Mon., Mar. 16 and Tues., Mar. 17 at the Mechanic Street Playhouse, 10 S. Mechanic Street, Lebanon, Ohio.

The show’s director, Steven Haines, asks that those auditioning simply prepare a song from the standard musical theatre repertoire (1950’s through 1980’s).  The song does not need to be memorized, and an accompanist will be provided at the audition.  Other songs may be workshopped at the auditions, and scripts for coached scene readings will be available. Those auditioning must be at least 18 years of age and are welcome to come to both of the audition sessions.

Haines is looking to cast an ensemble of 15-18 singing actors who will play the 6 principal characters and the 10+ secondary characters that populate the musical.  The actual production will open on May 8 for a two weekend run of 6 performances.

MAN OF LA MANCHA is a multiple Tony Award-winning musical that vividly imagines the later life of the great Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes as he awaits his trial in a dungeon at the height of the Spanish Inquisition.  The musical moves seamlessly between the prison and Cervantes’ own outsized imagination, where his noble idealism finds expression in his greatest literary creation, Don Quixote.  MAN OF LA MANCHA, with a heartfelt score that includes the worldwide hit The Impossible Dream, is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
