SHREK THE MUSICAL, based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage.
In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre–not a handsome prince–shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand…and his name is Shrek. Featuring a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery

This timeless drama of life in the mythical village of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, has become an American classic with universal appeal. Thornton Wilder’s most frequently performed play, Our Town appeared on Broadway in 1938 to wide acclaim, and won the Pulitzer Prize. OUR TOWN explores the relationship between two young Grover’s Corners neighbors, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, whose childhood friendship blossoms into romance, and then culminates in marriage. When Emily loses her life in childbirth, the circle of life portrayed in each of the three acts of Our Town–growing up, adulthood, and death–is fully realized.

The musical, based on a Stephen King horror novel, was presented last weekend, featuring students majoring in the nationally acclaimed Musical Theatre program at UC. LCT Panelists commended Lead Actress Hannah Freeman as Carrie White. “Her vocal clarity and pitch were great and the honesty with which she played the range of emotions was grounded,” stated one panelist. Another said Freeman “drew the audience in from the outset and delivered a vocally beautiful performance with seeming ease. Her acting communicated Carrie’s pain and grace. Even as audiences prepared for the inevitable, Freeman’s authenticity as Carrie made us care so much about her we hoped for a happier ending.”

Also singled out, Jenny Hickman as the mother, Margaret White, who was “an outstanding singer and presence on the stage.”

Scenic designer by Sarabeth Hall also won over the panelists. A panelist noted “she created a visceral environment that thrust audiences into the piece and created palpable excitement well before the first entrance.”

LCT recommends RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN as a 4-Star Production, presented by the Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati through October 27.

An LCT Panelist describes the play as “An excellent ensemble of actors in a thought-provoking play examining feminist issues and ‘the one that got away.’”

Another panelist states, “This play…is a solid production with a good cast. Much like Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Heidi Chronicles”, “Rapture, Blister, Burn” follows a single female protagonist who reflects on her choices as a successful academic at the expense of having a family. There were some funny bits in all of this, especially with the hilarious lines of the twenty-something post-feminist Avery, played by Hannah Sawicki.”

A finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize, the play was written by Gina Gionfriddo. It is making its regional premier here in Cincinnati and is directed by D. Lynn Meyers. Contact www.ensemblecincinnati.org for tickets and more information about the production.
