Regional premiere directed by Brian Isaac Phillips, featuring incredible cast of local actors

Know Theatre is excited to announce WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING by Andrew Bovell, acclaimed Australian playwright and author of Speaking in Tongues (recently seen at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in 2012). Time Out Magazine’s Best New Play of 2010, WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING opens on February 8, 2013 and runs through March 16, 2013. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips will direct the production, with scenic and lighting design by Andrew Hungerford, costume design by Noelle Wedig, and sound design by Doug Borntrager.

An intricate fabric of overlapping connections, WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING, moves seamlessly through time and across continents between the years 1959 and 2039. In a world where the rain rarely stops falling, four generations searching for truth and hoping to mend broken connections discover the impossibility of escaping the past. We are all shaped by what has come before and we create the shadow of what comes next.

“The script is absolutely beautifully crafted,” says Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director. “Mr. Bovell is an extraordinary storyteller. We’ve been waiting until we found just the right cast to announce the show and I’m thrilled with who we’ve assembled. We’ve also spent a great deal of time working out the production challenges that the script demands. I can’t wait to see these elements come together in our intimate space.”

The play’s title is WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING, but during at least part of the play a good deal of the rain does everything but stop, and Know Theatre’s production team have been hard at work for months to prepare the technical aspects of this production. There are many technical challenges to this show, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Check out the show to see how it all turns out.

WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING features an incredible ensemble of local actors. George Alexander (Joe Ryan) returns to Know Theatre, where he was most recently in Aliens with Extraordinary Skills. Ian Bond (Gabriel Law) appears at Know Theatre for the first time. He is a resident actor with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company where he has recently been in Sense and Sensibility and The Grapes of Wrath. Another Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Member, Sara Clark (Elizabeth Law) makes her debut with Know Theatre. Sara has also appeared locally with The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center and New Edgecliff Theatre. Brian Griffin (Henry Law) was most recently on Know Theatre’s stage in the regional premiere, Collapse. He also has worked with New Edgecliff Theatre, Covedale Center for the Performing Arts, and the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center. Jon Kovach (Andrew Price) performed in the 2012 Cincinnati Fringe Festival with NOTHING. He has also worked with several regional theatres including: The Human Race Theatre, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, and Madcap Puppets. Miranda McGee (Young Gabrielle) joins the cast from Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Originally from Australia, she has worked with Playhouse in the Park and Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center locally. Nick Rose (Gabriel York) makes his return to Know Theatre where his favorite roles have been in The Pillowman and Christmas Yet to Come. He has also been seen at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Playhouse in the Park, and Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. No stranger to Know Theatre, Adrianne Underhill (Older Elizabeth) was in Wonders of the World when Know Theatre was located at Gabriel’s Corner. She has also worked with Showboat Majestic, Footlighters, and Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative. This production is Kate Wilford’s (Older Gabrielle) debut at Know Theatre. Recently she has worked with New Edgecliff Theatre, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING was commissioned and first produced by Brink Productions in Australia. It premiered at the Scott Theatre, University of Adelaide, in February of 2008. The play’s European premiere was at Almeida Theatre in London in May of 2009.

All tickets are $15 in advance and $18 on the week of the show, beginning Monday at noon. Tickets can be purchased by visiting knowtheatre.com or calling 513.300.5669. Flex-passes are valid for this event.

PIP Appoints Three Association Artists

Timothy Douglas, KJ Sanchez & Michael Even Haney.

Timothy Douglas, KJ Sanchez & Michael Even Haney.

Playhouse in the Park Artistic Director Blake Robison announced today the appointment of three associate artists for the theatre. Timothy Douglas, KJ Sanchez and Michael Evan Haney will work with Robison as the institution’s primary artists for the next two seasons.

Each artist will direct two Playhouse productions and spend 15 weeks per year in residence interacting with patrons, students and the community at large.

“This is a unique, new paradigm for engaging artists in the life of our institution. Together, they will participate in season planning and form the backbone of our directing corps. They bring a diversity of background, experience and viewpoint to the Playhouse. It’s an inclusive, forward-looking model that excites me very much,” said Robison.

Timothy Douglas is a leading director whose credits include the world premiere of August Wilson’s Radio Golf and productions at major theatres across the country, including The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, LA’s Mark Taper Forum and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Playhouse audiences will get a first taste of his work with this spring’s production of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful.

KJ Sanchez has worked at leading theatres, including Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Actors Theatre of Louisville and Baltimore’s CENTERSTAGE. She is founder and CEO of American Records, a company that creates interview based theatre in communities across America. She is currently working with Playhouse staff, board members, community leaders and CCM students on a work exploring the impact and legacy of Cincinnati’s King Records.

Michael Evan Haney has served as the Playhouse’s Associate Artistic Director for the past 10 years. During this time, he has directed more than 25 productions, including the annual production of A Christmas Carol. He is a mainstay of the local arts scene, directing frequently at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. This spring at the Playhouse he will direct the noir thriller Double Indemnity.

In addition to their directorial assignments, all three artists will interact with the Playhouse’s staff and board, conduct audience discussions, work with students and participate in community outreach activities.

“These directors bring experience, talent, passion and diversity to the Playhouse. They are outstanding creative artists who understand the importance of reaching out to our community.

I look forward to collaborating with them, as we shape the Playhouse’s future together,” said Robison.

The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to ArtsWave.

The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Reupholster the Couch. ETC Extends FREUD’S LAST SESSION to Feb. 16

REUPHOLSTER THE COUCH!
ENSEMBLE THEATRE CINCINNATI EXTENDS FREUD’S LAST SESSION TO FEB. 16;
COMMUNITY DISCUSSION DATES ANNOUNCED

ETC_Freuds Last Session(Cincinnati, OH) FREUD’S LAST SESSION, the Mark St. Germain play about a fictional meeting between atheist Dr. Sigmund Freud and Christian writer C.S. Lewis, will extend its regional premiere run at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati through Saturday, February 16, 2013.

Originally slated to close on February 10, FREUD’S LAST SESSION will be extended an extra week in response to high pre-sales among audiences eager to eavesdrop on the 85-minute intellectual sparring match. Critics across the country have said it’s a sharp introduction to the essence of the two influential 20th-Century thinkers. Having achieved the feat of becoming the longest running Off-Broadway show, FREUD’S LAST SESSION was suggested by “The Question of God” by Armand M. Nicholi, Jr.

Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud pioneered the Id, the Ego and the Superego. Writer C.S. Lewis created The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Two men, both brilliant, yet vastly different: Freud the atheist, Lewis the believer. In this new play, which has been drawing record-breaking crowds in both New York and across the nation, they meet in 1939 as England goes to war against the Nazis. Their evening of electrifying conversation about God, love, sex, and the meaning of life will spark controversy long after the show is over.

PLAY/Back Community Talk-Back Dates
Ready your questions, comments, issues and drama! Join Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati for its PLAY/Back series after select performances of Freud’s Last Session as C.S. Lewis, Freud, and other brilliant minds step into the spotlight for a series of community talk-backs after the show to answer questions and engage in discussion with patrons.

PLAY/Back discussions will be held following the matinee performances on Sunday, January 27 and Sunday, February 3. Joining the panel for the talkback on January 27 is Dr. Stephen Yandell and Dr. Karl Stukenberg, both of Xavier University. Dr. Jack Lindy and Dr. Stephen Yandell will lead the talk-back on Sunday, February 3. Patrons who have purchased tickets to performances on any date are welcome to attend, however no purchase is necessary for admission to post-show talkbacks.

About the Panelists
Stephen Yandell, Ph.D. completed doctoral work at Indiana University as a Jacob K. Javits Fellow and currently teaches in Xavier University’s English Department. His earliest publication (as an undergraduate) focused on C.S. Lewis (“The Trans-cosmis Journeys in The Chronicles of Narnia”), and he continues to publish on various authors in Oxford’s Inklings writing group, including J.R.R. Tolkien. Most recently he argued for medieval connections in Lewis’s Till We Have Faces and provided a study of The Allegory of Love for the four-volume collection C.S. Lewis: Life, Works, and Legacy. His current publications also include a translation of the Middle Welsh narrative Math Son of Mathonwy and a co-edited collection entitled Prophet Margins: The Medieval Vatic Impulse and Social Stability.

He is currently doing research on the clinical efficacy of psychoanalysis. He, along with a research group centered in New York City, listens to taped psychoanalytic hours and evaluates the quality of the work being done by the patient and analyst and then looks at the relationship between this and changes in the patient’s condition. He has been intrigued by Freud since first reading his work in his undergraduate program at St. John’s College as part of the Great Books curriculum, and he has been intrigued by Lewis since reading the Chronicles of Narnia as a tween.

Jack Lindy, M.D. is a training and supervising psychoanalyst at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute.
