NYC Casting Call for THE VIVIAN GIRLS on April 6

NYC casting call with Cincinnati ties. This was originally workshopped in Cincinnati with Michael Haney directing. Two cast members are CCM students who will be traveling to New York for the workshop. Please share with anyone who might be interested. -Rob
Neighborhood Productions seeks singer/actor/dancers to do a week-long workshop of a new nontraditional musical at the American Folk Art Museum, May 7-12:

THE VIVIAN GIRLS
a play with music
By Stacy Sims
Music by Peter Adams
Directed by Sarah Cameron Sunde
With choreography by Heather Britt

Based on the work of folk artist Henry Darger. The theatrical work explores Darger’s favorite artistic subjects, the Vivian Girls, and what happens when they are left alone to author their own experience without being held to Darger’s image of them nor are they subject to interpretation by the art world. A beautiful coming of age adventure story, through music, words and movement, the piece asks “Are we particularly good stewards of our own story and desires?”

Rehearsals will be Monday, May 7th – Saturday, May 12th. You must be available during the following time-slots:

  • Monday, May 7: 2-7pm
  • Tuesday, May 8: 12-7pm
  • Wednesday, May 9: 11am-9pm
  • Thursday, May 10: 10am-2pm
  • Friday, May 11: 10am-2pm
  • Saturday, May 12: 9am-7pm

A workshop performance will take place in the Atrium of the Folk Art Museum (across from Lincoln Center) on Saturday, May 12th @ 5pm.

This workshop is an Actors Equity Staged Reading and all actors will receive a stipend $100 for participating.

AUDITIONS are Friday, April 6th 11am – 5pm. Callbacks, if necessary, will be Saturday morning April 7th.

For the audition we will need you to prepare a one-minute contemporary song from any genre (written since 1980). We will distribute a short side for you to prepare, and we may ask you to do a little movement.

For an audition please email your headshot and resume to viviangirlsaplaywithmusic@gmail.com.

A very special event presented in conjunction with
THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE PRODUCTION OF
GEM OF THE OCEAN

When August Wilson died in 2005, the New York Times called him “theatre’s poet of black America.” But Wilson was more than that – he was one of America’s great playwrights, period.

The Human Race Theatre is adding to the experience of seeing GEM OF THE OCEAN, one of Wilson’s last works, by presenting a symposium on Wilson’s life and writing, with a distinguished panel of friends and experts.

The symposium will begin at 1 pm, Saturday, March 31, at The Loft Theatre 126 N. Main St., Dayton.

Moderating the discussion will be Dayton attorney David Greer, a long-time Wilson fan. Panelists are Mark Clayton Southers, director of both The Human Race production of GEM OF THE OCEAN and the theatre at The August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh; Sala Udin, a childhood friend of Wilson and actor in his early plays; Christopher Rawson, senior theatre critic of the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and co-author of August Wilson: Pittsburgh Places in His Life and Plays; and Earlham College professor Charles Holmond, who teaches a course on Wilson.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available here, by calling Ticket Center Stage at (937) 228-3630, or at the Schuster Center box office.
