CYPT ’11 Reunion Benefit an Entertaining Success

On December 27, 2011, Cincinnati Landmark Productions held its annual CYPT Benefit Reunion Concert at the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts. Now in its third year, the concert is equal parts fundraiser, entertainment and social mixer for alumni of the venerable 30-year program.

Recognition for distinguished alumni and friends of the program were given in the form of the third annual CYPT awards. The CYPT Founder’s Award – given to someone who fundamentally ensured CYPT’s success over its 30 years – was presented to Steve Papin and Tony Hungler for their efforts in the acquisition and on-going renovation of the Covedale Theater and for the incorporation of Cincinnati Landmark Productions.

Matt Miller, news director of Fox19, was awarded the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Life Achievement Award for his exemplary broadcast journalism career and for his commitment to keeping the arts in the news.

The 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award for Performing Arts was presented to Eric Bricking. Bricking founded Hyperion Productions, a New York-based tour management and production company that represents a number of popular touring shows.

The CYPT Hall of Fame Award – recognizing the work during a participant’s years in the program – was presented to Doug Berlon and Laura Zervic. Berlon was a mainstay in the early productions in CYPT history, starring as Harold Hill in The Music Man, as Sancho Panza in Man of La Mancha, as King Arthur in Camelot, among others. Zervic was a multi-talented veteran of CYPT, having stage-managed, produced and assisted directed many shows. She also starred in such shows as Jabberwocky, West Side Story and The Music Man.

Each year, two “graduating” participants of the program are presented with honorary Big Guys scholarships, named after the informal graduate club from CYPT’s early years. For their dedication to CYPT, Abby Bartish and Tommy Boeing were given $500 awards to use toward college expenses this fall.

The annual Name-the-Dressing Rooms promotion generated over $750. The two winners were: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1997) and Mack and Mabel (1991).

Through ticket sales, live auctions and other fundraisers during the event, the 2011 CYPT Benefit Reunion Concert raised over $12,000. The proceeds go toward off-setting the rising costs of the summer production and help to ensure that anyone who wants to participate in CYPT in the future can afford to.

In addition to awards and fundraisers, the Benefit was also a chance for notable alumni to return to the stage to offer a song or a story. Highlights of the evening included: Joe Moeller, Jerome Doerger, Heather Roush, Michelle Wells and duets from Sara Kenny and Andrew Maloney, Aaron Lavigne and Sarah Hiance, and Dan Bayer and Jeni Bayer Schwiers. An alumni dance troupe representing several eras from the program also performed a showstopper from Cabaret.

CYPT alumni and friends should mark their calendars for December 27, 2012 for the next edition of the benefit reunion concert.

Christopher Dooley as Harry & Colette Thomas as Joan.

LOVE SONG presented by The Untethered Theater Company through Jan. 15. You can read the show description here.

UTC aims high with their sophomore production, taking on a demanding script (in character and set). LOVE SONG is described as a “quirky, off-beat comedy.” Quirky is hard to pull off. Opening night, it seemed the cast had yet to find their rhythm with each other.

The lead of Beane is played by Glenn Schaich. His interpretation of Beane came across more as emotionally detached rather than socially awkward. I understand why, for the first scenes of the show, you had Beane dressed as he was, but the fully buttoned trench coat came off a bit “flasher-ish” to me. It would have been welcome to see a bit more personality come through. The more the audience is rooting for Beane, the more successful the show.

MaryKate Moran as Molly & Glenn Schaich as Beane.

Early scenes with Beane’s sister Joan (Colette Thomas) and her husband Harry (Christopher Dooley) were not as successful as their later, happy scene. The two actors didn’t seem to be performing at the same level in emotion and energy. I understand that the relationship is troubled but I didn’t get a good sense of why.

Rounding out the cast is MaryKate Moran as Beane’s girlfriend Molly. I enjoyed the level of intensity she brought to the character initially, but as Molly begins to soften, so did the energy of the character.

Colette Thomas as Joan & Glenn Schaich as Beane.

One of the most successful scenes takes place near the end of the play in the heart-to-heart with siblings Beane and Joan in his apartment. I do think there is a bit more humor to find in the script, especially during the scene in the restaurant.

The three playing areas for the show required the set to run the length of the building. I wish there had been some way to get the set pieces off the floor a bit. Actor’s heads tended to disappear into the audience whenever they sat on stage in either living space. The required special effect for the apartment didn’t read very well from across the room. The white on white walls made it hard to tell, visually, what was happening.

Overall, the pieces are there for a good production and I’m confident that the performances will get stronger as the run continues. The connections between the characters just need to be better defined.

A comedy set in a single branch of the United States Postal Service along “Tornado Alley” in Oklahoma. These characters are the sorters, handlers of each letter, parcel, and package on route to its destination. It is an endless task. It takes guts, determination and SELF DELUSION. The moment leaves you wondering who could go “postal” first.

CCM Presents Acclaimed Rock Musical SPRING AWAKENING

The 2011-2012 Studio Musical Theatre Series continues with this passionate and unforgettable audience-favorite

CINCINNATI, OH — The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) will present the award-winning Spring Awakening as the next installment in its 2011-2012 Studio Musical Theatre Series. The musical runs Feb. 2 – 4 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and promises to push the envelope as a stirring production of this celebrated rock musical.

Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening celebrates the journey from youth to adulthood with power, poignancy and unforgettable passion. Following the tumultuous period of adolescent self-discovery of a group of German teenagers, this coming-of-age story is a powerful presentation of the trials, tears and exhilaration of the teen years.

Spring Awakening was nominated for eleven Tony Awards in 2007, and ultimately won eight, including best musical. It was named the best musical of the year by the New York Times, New York Post, New York Observer and USA Today. CCM’s Studio Series production of Spring Awakening is directed by Steven Goldstein, with musical direction by Roger Grodsky and choreography by Diane Lala.

Note: This production features adult themes and situations and is intended for mature audiences.
