THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA Runs Nov. 16-19

CCM_The Rape of LucretiaTHE RAPE OF LUCRETIA
CCM Opera
Nov. 16-19
Patricia Corbett Theatre [University Heights]

Student directed by Darya Zholnerova
Conducted by William Langley

Virtue is threatened by corruption in this haunting chamber opera. In ancient times, the city of Rome has fallen into depravity and it seems the only honorable woman who remains is Lucretia. The king’s son seethes with jealousy, determined to test Lucretia’s chastity. The events that ensue become a symbol of the regime’s oppression, sparking an uprising among the people. Featuring some of Britten’s most beautiful music, the opera conveys with intense passion the struggle between evil and redemption. Sung in English with supertitles. For mature audiences, contains scenes of self-harm and sexual violence.

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE Runs Nov. 8-12

CCM_Spelling BeeTHE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
UC College-Conservatory of Music
Nov. 8-12
[University Heights]

Directed by Chaz Wolcott
Music directed by Steve Goers

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

CINCINNATI (October 19, 2023)—Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) have announced the next workshop in their groundbreaking joint program, Opera Fusion: New Works.

In collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera, the Cincinnati partners will host a workshop in November 2023 for the new opera Lincoln in the Bardo, with music by Missy Mazzoli and libretto by Royce Vavrek, based on the celebrated novel by George Saunders. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and Los Angeles Opera, Lincoln in the Bardo is slated to receive its world premiere in 2026.

Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW) is co-directed by Robin Guarino, professor of opera at CCM, and Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera, and provides composers and librettists the opportunity to collaborate with singers and creative personnel to refine their works-in-progress. During the November workshop, Mazzoli and Vavrek will work alongside conductor Steven Osgood, stage director Lileana Blain-Cruz, dramaturg Paul Cremo, and a cast of singers including renowned soprano Christine Goerke, to take the opera to its next creative stage.

The OF:NW workshop for Lincoln in the Bardo will culminate in a public performance of excerpts on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 2 p.m. (ET) at Cincinnati Opera’s Corbett Opera Center at Music Hall (1243 Elm Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202). The performance will be followed by a conversation about the opera with Mazzoli, Vavrek, Saunders, Osgood, Cremo, Goerke, and the cast, moderated by Guarino and Mirageas. Admission to the performance and post-performance conversation is free, though seating is limited and reservations are required. Tickets become available on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 12 p.m. (ET) and can be reserved at cincinnatiopera.org or by calling 513-241-2742.

About Lincoln in the Bardo
Lincoln in the Bardo
is a new opera by composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by George Saunders, which spins a fantastical and supernatural tale inspired by a true historical event. In the early days of the Civil War, President Lincoln’s beloved 11-year-old son, Willie, dies unexpectedly and is laid to rest at Georgetown Cemetery. A grief-stricken Lincoln returns several times to the crypt to hold his son’s body. Meanwhile, Willie finds himself in a strange purgatory where ghosts mingle, gripe, commiserate, quarrel, and enact bizarre acts of penance. Within this transitional state—called, in the Tibetan tradition, the bardo—a monumental struggle erupts over Willie’s soul. As in the novel, the opera employs a kaleidoscopic panorama of voices to ask a timeless, profound question: How do we live and love when we know that everything we love must end? (Description adapted from Penguin Random House.)

About Opera Fusion: New Works

Funded through a generous gift from the Mellon Foundation, Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW) is a partnership between Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) dedicated to fostering the development of new American operas. This collaboration is jointly led by Robin Guarino, professor of opera at CCM, and Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of Cincinnati Opera. OF:NW offers composers or composer/librettist teams the opportunity to workshop an opera during a residency in Cincinnati. Residencies utilize the facilities, personnel, and talent of both Cincinnati Opera and CCM. The workshops are cast with a combination of CCM students and professional artists, and each workshop concludes with a free public presentation of excerpts followed by an audience Q&A session. CCM and Cincy Shakes Present Vampire Play for Halloween

CCM_Let the Right One InLET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct. 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater

CINCINNATI, OH —UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and the Cincinnati Shakespeare
Company (CSC) present Let The Right One In, a bloody vampire play based on the bestselling novel and award-winning film. Led by CSC Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips, the collaborative performance features professional CSC guest artists and CCM’s student actors.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.

“The production is such a special opportunity for both of these Cincinnati institutions,” Phillips says. “Actors from both CCM and CSC have the opportunity to work on a piece that challenges the imagination, shows the transformative power of adaptation in the theatre, and a brings a uniquely haunting story to life just in time for Halloween.”

Based on the novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, the play follows Oskar, a teenager who is mercilessly bullied by his schoolmates and neglected by his parents. Oskar sees an opportunity for connection in Eli, a mysterious girl who just moved in next door and only comes out at night. Amidst a string of brutal murders by an apparent serial killer, the two form a friendship made more intense by their shared loneliness. But while Oskar’s loneliness stems from the all-too-human struggles of early adolescence, Eli is lonely because she’s been a teenager for a very, very long time.

From Count Dracula to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, vampire legends have captured imaginations for centuries. Aside from supplying gore and scares, what can monsters reveal about loneliness, love and humanity? Adapted for the theater by Jack Thorne, Let The Right One In wields the vampire myth to deliver a dark coming-of-age love story that explores horror and compassion in equal measure.

CCM’s student actors will perform alongside CSC actors Barry Mulholland, Kelly Mengelkoch, Geoffrey Barnes II and Billy Chace. All artists involved — from the actors on stage to the designers and technicians backstage — have the challenge of creating a performance that delivers both genuine emotion and genuine chills.

CCM’s Theatre Design and Production team has some bloody special effects in store, including an edible heart. Audiences beware: there is a content advisory for Let The Right One In. The production is for mature audiences, and includes sexual situations, violence, blood and gore. The play is not appropriate for children 12 and under; parents strongly cautioned.
